Arts, crafts and such
- Only 2 shops come to mind here. The one on the high street is called Boudins. An old, tradional shop run by little old ladies with generations of knowledge on cross-stiches. I wouldn't really class this shops as arts and crafts, more specifically a needle-work shop.
The 2nd is the Fabric Factory opposite the Town Hall. A favourite haunt of any student doing Home Ec, it boasts a huge variety of fabrics, trims and the like. Like Boudins, it is specifically aimed at needlework however. Although, it is cooler to be seen at Fabric Factory in comparison to Boudins.
If Art Galleries are your thing then unfortunatly St.Heliers not really for you. The one that comes to mind is the Bernie Gallery, which is to be found on the top floor of the Jersey Arts Center. The Bernie Gallery plays host to some of the most up-and-coming local artists and it's walls have been graced with some of the most beautiful and unique pieces of art I have ever seen. Unfortunalty the B.Gallery is literally just the top floor of the Arts Center and is pretty small. But the upside is that it's not well frequented so you can go up there, sit with your coffee and just look.
Also it brings me to my next recomendation- The Jersey Arts Center. Or JAC to us in the trade.
The JAC is the best venue in the island for brining in original, thought-provoking and classic performances. Small venue though it is, the popular performances always sell to capacity, which is about 5-700 people not including handicapped patrons of which we (those who work at the JAC) can seat 10-20.
As well as bringing in popular acts from around the world (such as choirs from Zambia) it also plays host to local theatre groups such as the Green Room Club, Youtheatre, Jersey Players and others. Most of our theatre groups are award winning and never fail to pull in the crowds. As well as live acts the JAC also hosts alternative film festivals, with world cinema and the old classics.
Paired with the JAC is the main Theatre near the hospital. The Theatre never fails to attract popular shows including the Russian Ballet troupe, Rocky Horror, Woman in Black, An Inspector Calls and hundreds more! Since it's refurbishment in 2002 the Theatre is better than ever, getting bids from some of the worlds most popular shows and groups, definatly a serious competitor in the Theatre world.
