Can anyone give any information about Chamberlayne road in NW10 around 1960-1970. WOuld like to know about the shops really especially the greengrocers store across the road from the school. I beleive it is now a pub called the greyhound. Hope someone can help with this.
  • Re: chamberlayne road NW10 by richard blay (Member 10126001) on 7-Jun-2004
there were three schools on chamberlayne road the one closest to the pub had a greengrocers opposite the name of the shop was R Marsh and sons ltd early in the 60s this shop was managed by Bobby Marsh who lived above the shop his wife ran the florists next door, this is the only greengrocers opposite a school that I can recollect. I lived in Kilburn Lane for many years in the early sixties so if ... more >>

Thanks for this information. I know this greengrocers was number 64 Chamberlayne Road now it is a pub called the greyhound. Do you know of the greengrocers run by a family called the Lynan's by any chance or could this be the same greengrocer you have mentioned just with a different name.

I do not know the persons you are seeking however I will be visiting my mother soon who still lives in Kilburn Lane and I will ask her if she remembers the name regards Richard

I,m Richards brother. I lived in Kensal Rise from 1953 to 1977. There was another greengocers in Chamberlayne Road. This was on the corner with Keslake Road. I worked there on Saturdays. It was called Cooks. It changed hands a couple of times and closed down in the 1980's.

I don't recall a pub called the Greyhound and I was there last week.

  • Re: chamberlayne road NW10 by Tony Blay (Member 10127646) on 3-Jul-2004
I just had another thought. There was a grenngrocers cum minimarket opposite Kensal Rise School. It was owned by an Irish man but I can't recall his name. I think this has now been converted to a bar. This was a few doors away from the Queens Park branch of the British Legion. The only shop remaining from the 1960's is John Nodes funeral directors.

  • Re: chamberlayne road NW10 by karen (Member 10112708) on 17-Jul-2004
That could be it actually if it was run by an irish man. The family were irish & think one of thir daughters helped oout in the shop. She had red hair & had a twin sister. They were a large family about 5 children altogether. I am almost 100% sure it is now a pub called the greyhound, i know there was a greengrocers at number 64 Chamberlayne Rd & mad a trip down there in April & saw it was now a p... more >>

    Hi Again,

I have found some further info out. The greengrocers by the sounds of things changed its name quite a few times. The names i have are J W Baxters,Kensal Rise Fruiterers, and then P Booker Fruiterer. Do any of these names ring a bell to you? Thanks once again

  • Re: chamberlayne road NW10 by John Hyde (Member 10140733) on 19-Dec-2004
    Hi Karen,

    Ref the Greengrocers Shop.
Are we talking about the Greengrocers shop which used to be opposite the now called Kensal Rise School, which used to be called Harvist Road School, at 72 Chamberlayne Road?
Well if this is so, then this shop closed down in early 1945 and was converted into the Royal British Legion Club which remains there today.

    John

Thanks for this info. I'm not sure of the name of the school but i made a trip to Chamberlayne Road & all i know is it is now a pub/bar called The Greyhound,so it possibly isn't the one you had in mind if it is now the British Legion. It was opposite a school though i do know that. Any other info would be greatly appreciated. The shop was definately there in the 60's/70's but not sure when it chan... more >>

Re: mail from Tony Blay : Richards brother. This is the grocers i was talking about it's boarded up. Tony as you worked there on Saturdays. Do you remember Andy? i think he got married late 1978. Can you let me know, I have some information that i must pass on to him now.
    Many thanks.

  • Re: chamberlayne road NW10 by BRIDGET (Member 10169643) on 18-Nov-2005
Lyons family ran the grocers shop to the beginning of the 1990s , it was then taken over by an asian family , who sold it . The grocers shop turned into a pub , firstly called chambers and then Greyhound . The lyons family moved to Wembley but I believe they have now moved on again.

Hi, I have seen your message on a website looking for information about a greengrocers/grocers in Kensal Rise. My parents had a shop in Chamberlayne Road during the time that you mention. Who are you and why are you interested in them?
