Im a teenager fae Laurencekirk, well outside it! Laurencekirk ain't as bad as you guys make it! Yea it sucks when its cold, but there is a place called The Venue, behind the Masonic Hall (the hall half way up the street). It has comps, pool table, sofas, tvs, ps2's. I haven't been in but my younger brother and his friends have and say its quite cool. Me and my friends dont really go in cause its full of younger kids, well 1st to 3rd yrs. But apart from that nothing has changed! Ill be happy to answer any questions! hee hee! Anyone here that has left school within the last year or so that i might no? I go to Mearns obviously! Cheers talk later! ... more >>

hey, im becca, I live in south wales and I was born in Aberdeen...I used to live in Laurencekirk but only really remember fragments of it. When my parents moved home to South Wales we hardly had reason to go up to Scotland so I only went back a few times in my childhood. Now I'm 18 and applying for Glasgow university because I've always loved Scotland and the memories I do have, are really happy o nes...
Just thought I'd share that :)

recently i drove past lournie. i was actually looking for the place as i went to school there many oatcakes ago.
if my memory serves me well, it was shite.
thank fuck i got kicked out and sent to a childrens home up in the middle of no-where.
i wasn't liked that much and i didn't really like anyone else. i remember kevin donald was a bit of a gimp. hi if you're reading this, oh i forgot, you're a thick bastard so you probably won't.
debbie reid was really fit- although she's probably squeezed out a few kids by now.
anyway, enough of slagging down the old hole, heres a big shout out to the lournie massive;
barry thompson, murray sangster, roy valentine(twat),christine hay(she's alright),sarah page(snobby cow),graham harrison(are you gay yet). god, you know what, i can't even remember you all, so if you're there and you feel left out, aah!
anyway, farewell mearns, hope to hear from you soon. ... more >>

Hey scrolling down I see that I posted on this site a few years ago. Totally forgot about that. Sorry I made deragatory comments about dear old Lournie, but I was excited...spent that year, and the next 2 years after that traveling all over the US and it made me feel like I'd been living in a box for the first 17 years of my life. I still don't like the fact that the town seems to have degraded mo re. I hope someone can tell me straight and prove me wrong. It was a nice wee town. ... more >>

| Anyone out there?

by Kevin McIe (Member 10108891) on 30-Oct-2003

I noticed a couple messages sent, well, this year anyways, by my best mate Neil. Hey man. Anyone else? I moved away from Lournie in '96 for Pennsylvania in the USA. I'm now living in Delaware right on the beach, about as close to Scotland as I can get in this place. I have to admit I've heard some horror stories coming out of Laurencekirk now making it sound more like inner city Glasgow rather tha n a nice quiet farming villiage that it used to be. Like something about the Boar's Head (Gardenston Arms for the ininitiated) getting burned down. Is that really true? You do know that Robert Burns stayed there once right? AND the Rolling Stones (before they became famous, and supposedly got chucked out cause they stank so much, lol). What is it about that area that attracts arsonists? First the barnyard behind the hotel a few years back, and now the hotel itself. Anyways, hi to anyone I know, and if you see James Cleghorn walking down the High Street, tell him his nephew Kevin said hi. He's too cheap to get the internet himself. lol ... more >>

Hey Kev...you're back again!
Happy New Year to you over in Delaware, glad its still all going well.
Yeah I've heard a lot of dodgy things about Laurencekirk lately too but the high street seems to be looking tidier - dunno what they've done. Although what is the latest craze of chopping off horses tails? All we ever did was have a sneaky smoke up the den!!

Can anyone help. I have reached 'that' age when I have strated to wonder what happened to friends I had in my good old (bad old) schooldays. Does anyone know what Anne Mitchell is doing these days? I knew her when she went to Crieff High in Perthshire. She transferred to Laurencekirk at either the end of 1st or during 2nd year (approx. 1978 / 1979). Of course, we were MUCH younger than the ot her pupils of that year - mind you I've definately caught up now! ... more >>

I am really not surprised at the pathetic content of the Laurencekirk website, having lived there for years. Believe it or not, it's not all full of narrow-minded nobodies with nothing good to say about anyone or anything. But at the end of the day it's a rural community. The older generation are quite happy, it's just the teens (and 20 somethings who thing they're still teens) who need to wake up and realise that the world does not revolve around them.
At the end of the day I'm glad I got out. I'm now happy, with a career and real friends. It's not Laurencekirk we should be complaining about. It's a lovely little village with real history. The only problem is the immature pricks who think they own the place. ... more >>

Hi there Seona. I completely agree with what you said in your message. I lived there all my life and I was glad I got out if only for the sake of having a wider outlook and better career options but Laurencekirk is a great place and I try to get home when I can, but it is spoiled by the arses you mentioned. All the best with your new career and new friends!

Going to have to reply here, Yes you are right , Lauencekirk is not a high flying place but it certainly did me good in the years I was staying there or as close as I could get. People did talk to you and it was nice to walk down the street and a few dozen smiles . so take care you all

Hi there Helen. Good to see that someone else actually looks at this site. I agree with what you said about how it was nice to walk down the street and get a few smiles but the place is not the same now! It has changed so much and the people even more so! I know its a small place with some small minded people but it was better that way than it is now! Where are you these days?

Louisiana. Nice here. Going back to Scotland in Sept. Going to freeze spare bits off. Where are you, still in Laurencekirk , or did you escape too lol. Take care

Well Kevin, either your message scared everyone away from the site, or they are all on their way to kick your ass or everyone is dead!
Come on now, Laurencekirk isn't THAT obscure that no-one ever looks it up...or is it?
- Re: There's Nobody Here!
by Kevin McIe (Member 10013827) on 1-Jan-2001
Well judging that it's an online forum about LOURNIE it's not all that difficult to see why it's empty. Here's some advice to all you Laurencekirk residents who look at this thing...LEAVE!!!!!! You have no idea what you're missing. God this past year alone I've been to California, Canada, Memphis and Chicago all with a minimum wage pay at the age of 21. And in a few weeks I'm off to Arizona. True it's a desert, but it's a wee bit more interesting than Marykirk or Fettercairn wouldn't you say? EMIGRATE! Scotland may be beautiful, but the UK is expensive, and above all boring!
Coming back for a holiday in June too...now I'm sure I'll get the shit kicked outta me for this message. LOL! Never mind, I've got long hair now...nobody'll recognise me, hehehehe!!!

My god Kevin - you trash the town's reputation, and you might even be scaring potential tourism away from the Metropolis that is Laurencekirk. You even admit that you are risking a big kick-in from the Bus-Shelter Boys when you come over on holiday. And then you say that no-one will recognize you, which I know is true, but why tell everyone that the reason they wont recognize you is cause you have long hair now...you have given your secret away, they know where you are, they know what you look like. And as the gangs approach in the speeding (ahem) Fiestas, you had better pray!!
Ha ha...see you in June Kev! ... more >>

Nah, I wasn't trashing nobody...just giving a little advice. Lournie is a nice wee town...but there's really nothing to do. And it's not till you get out and see the rest of the world you realize that there's actually a sun behind the layers of black clouds that cover the place. When I went back for a month in 1997, I expected to feel something since I was so homesick. I walked the length of Laurencekirk and I felt nothing. It was the greatest anitclimax of my life. I miss Scotland like you wouldn't believe...I miss the feeling of hiking through the hills...cycling through the empty roads (you don't get those in the part of the US where I live), and feeling closer to civilization (America is surprisingly cut-off from the rest of the world, despite the fact that it likes to worm it's way into the affiars of other countries). But I don't miss Laurencekirk itself. Sure it was the place of my childhood, full of friendly neigbours, and a more-often-than-not, enjoyable school life, but it was dreary. A mile of grey in a beautiful green valley.
When I come on holiday, I'll go to Lournie for a day or so to visit my uncle and mabe stop in at the old neighbours in Blackiemuir Ave. Perhaps a night or 2 in the Retreat and tour Glen Esk once again so I can show my Girlfriend Loch Lee and the spot where we had our well planned yet badlt executed camping trip (LOL). I dunno...still planning. I still mght not be able to come up North for more than a few days after what I'm going to be doing in London at the start. And I got a couple trips between now and then too I hope I can afford it. One thing I do miss is when we got pissed on the streets of Elgin...that's still the best damn fish supper I ever tasted...you gotta take me there again. See ya later. :D ... more >>
