  • Halfords - was a cycleshop before the rise of the car. Halford lived in Leicester and opened his first store there.
  • Film director Stephen Frears, indie band Kasabian, John Deacon from Queen, Parminder Nagra from ER and Bend It Like Beckham, rugby player Martin Johnson
  • The great band Kasabian, from Blaby of course!! No ones said Benny Hill, he was brought up in South Wigston..
  • Comedian Bob Mortimer lived in Leicester for a while, whilst studying at Leicester Uni, Roger Chapman and the band 'Family' were from here, as was John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. And, of course, Kasabian are from the county. Paula Ratcliffe the runner, and the gut who plays Roy in Coronation Street are from nearby Loughborough!
  • Always-injured goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is from Earl Shilton. He went to the school in which I teach.

  • Matt Darey: Producer, remixer, DJ of mash up trance and house music, and general International Man of Mystery, was born, brought up, and educated in Leicester (he's also my brother). He now lives in Chigwell, Essex.

  • There is a famous ex-resident of Leicester that you all appear to have forgotten: Joe Orton. One of the most famous playwrights of the 1960's. Born and bred on the Saffron Lane estate, and immortalized in the biopic 'Prick up your Ears', where Gary Oldman played him.
  • Narinder from Big Brother 2, and Lee from Big Brother 3. Simon DeMonfort. And one certain footballer named GARY LINEKER.
  • andy townsend lives in blaby he used to be a wicked skate till he done a backside flip of the bus shelter on blaby park and broke his leg and arm and dislocated his elbow!!

  • Thomas Cook the travel business, the man himself lived in London Road, Leicester and started his business with charabanc (horse drawn carriages) to Belvoir Castle. The Attenborough bros, Dickie and David were born in Leicestershire, Gary Lineker's mum and dad run a veg stall in the City market place.
  • I'm surprised no-one's mentioned C.P. Snow. Author of the "Strangers and Brothers" series, the first of which (Time of Hope) starts off in Leicester just before WWI.He caused a bit of upset in the literary world with his "Two Cultures" Lecture, published in the New Statesman in the '50s, and angrily rebutted by F.R Leavis in the Spectator (probably because it was too near the mark!) These days, he is regarded (unfairly, in my opinion) as very unfashionable and an inferior author to his wife, Pamela Hansford Johnson.

  • Millionaire lottery winner Lee Ryan is from Leicester. He was sussed by the tabloids soon after his win about what a twenty-four carrot bell-end he was. This coined the tabloid headline "National Rotter Lee". Top marks to the boys at Fleet Street.

  • Rosemary Conley fitness guru. Her car's always parked at the station when she's appearing on richard and judy.

  • Gary Lineker must be Leicester's most famous local lad. His dad still owns a stall in the market and Gary himself used to help out there as a young 'un.

  • The city has also spawned both good and bad music - Small indie bands like Cornershop and Diesel Park West, and sadder people such as Showwaddywaddy and Engleburt Humperdink are all from Leicester.
