Pubs
- Firebug! (formerly Firefly/ Lamplighters) the best alternative bar in the city, 4am license, great food, no attitude www.firebugbar.co.uk

- well, the william wyggeston is nice and cheap, good place for starting out before a night out.
turkey cafe - do the most amasing cocktails. expensive but lovely.
firefly - can b expensive but nice, has a garden too, oooo.
- i dont drink
- Oddysey.
- Hundred s and hundreds of pubs - my personal favourite has to be the Rainbow and Dove, corner of Charles Street and Northampton Street.
- The yates' in leicester is one of the worst bars in the world. even mr yates himself denies all knowledge of it, "but mr yates surely it must be your bar, what about that inimitable godawful decor and the unmistakeable atmosphere of a condemned morgue?!" "please get out of my way! i'm not answering anymore of your stupid questions!" but most of the bars around there are rubbish (the square, the bank, lamplighters), even the varsity, once you get over the excitement of the open-plan upstairs section.
- Firefly (old Lamplighters) Cocktail happy hours, very good!
www.barfirefly.co.uk
- litten tree is one of the best at the minute
- firkin pubs are closed, site needs bringing up to date
- Hi
I notice you haven't listed gigs at a Leicester venue at which we're playing later this week. Could you please include it??
GIG ALERT
Thu Apr 1 2004 @ The Shed in Leicester
Yeoman Street, (off Humberstone Gate)
Leicester
0116 262 2255
Venue Website: http://www.shedvenue.co.uk
Band Playing: Logan, Insaniac, No Known Solution & In Stone
Insaniac are from Norwich and play punk which morphs into metal and then back again before you know it. Those who like The Wildhearts, Slayer or The Sex Pistols will love this gig
- For an injection of youthfullness try Castlerock Bar as there is a happy hour every night plus the charlotte in next door so always a good place to start before a gig
- The Fourpence and Firkin in Leicester shut AGES ago, it is now an extension to an Irish theme pub, it WAS the oldest pub in Leicestershire.....
- Castle Rock Cafe next to the Charlotte, Lamplighters (RIP) is closing BUT is moving to the Jolly Rancher on Conduit Street (1st left past the train station), Jaceys Bar near the Haymarket Bus Station, The Globe on silver street, The High Cross and Litten Tree on the High Street, all of these places are great for us people who dont qualify for ID.
- jacesys and urm skandels!!
- before it was jazzed up, when it was grotty the plant on granby street used to be THE wetherspoons pub. it was full of degenerates, street urchins and other entertainers. it was a very spiritual place.
The yates' in leicester is one of the worst bars in the world. even mr yates himself denies all knowledge of it, "but mr yates surely it must be your bar, what with the inimitable godawful decor and the unmistakeable atmosphere of a condemned morgue?!" "please get out of my way! i'm not answering anymore of your stupid questions!" but most of the bars around there are rubbish (the square, the bank, lamplighters), even the varsity, once you get over the excitement of the open-plan upstairs section.
- For a cool eve - The Orange Tree
- best one has to be market bar coz its sooo cheap its just round the corner and down some stairs from Lloyds.
derbyshire&rutland arms has got a dodgy pool table witch gives you free games.
Q-Bar, charles street is good for the football matches. some might say go to litten tree but that place is full of scumy girls and greeseball boys. they seem to like eachother! best to leave them in peace
- Tons of them
- The High Cross is good, sometimes a bit rough and packed but real real cheap. They also serve food quite late, for example Caramel Sponge is nice, but sickly.
- the empire.
plenty on belgrave road.
old horse for its garden in the summer.
soar point for its beautiful canalside location. but someone's got to sort out that pigeon: it's the meanest and fattest pigeon in Leicester. 3 victims on one afternoon on that table will testify to this.
- That crappy firkin on Oxford st has changed to a chilled out, fun, student pub, the Polar Bear, gone is the "authentic" junk, it's now trendy - massive improvement!
- braustone Gate and Narborough Rd area is great for bars. there seems to be a new bar open each week! I moved to Leicester knowing nothing about each area and happened to find myself living here. Its a great area to live - i dont even need to go into town for a decent nite out with no townies and wankers.
- I'm only 16 god sake!
- The highcross
- "Again, NO pub has ever served a minor" bollocks have u ever been to Zanzibar or Kudos
- Wetherspoons turned me away after IDing me. I'm 23. This is because the minimum age for drinking in there is 45. There is however, no dress code. Also no atmosphere, no music and the toilets are only reachable witha team of huskies and a sherpa. Why do I go there? It's very cheap.
- Undecided is awesome
- For a rocky pub go to the Lamplighters, for a more relaxed indie place try Jaceys. If you want to scream over peoples voices and get charged ridiculaaaaas prices then go to 'The Bank' yes a bank thats now A TRENDY WINE BAR!!! It has a huge revolving TV screen though - but it can make you feel more drunk than you are!!
- bar risa, Lloyds@Corn Exchange (for the atmosphere, i recomend that u get pissed in Market Bar next door then come 2 Corn Exchange, just be careful theres usually some pedophiles in market bar)
- As of Sept 2001, beware... The Globe is ruined! Ambience - none. Beer - mediocre. Room to sit down - stacks!
- The DDC (or Dover Castle on Dover Street) is the main gay pub in the City. Camp music and occasional cabaret hosted by Drag DJ Rusty. Helsinkis (Rutland Street) is a mixed bar, with a fabulously non-attitude crowd. Hartleys (Belgrave Gate) for those of you who like harder music.
- Erm the Turkey Cafe is a cool bar, go downstairs they have these real comfy seats.
- Andy:Erm the Turkey Cafe is a cool bar, go downstairs they have these real comfy seats.
- Bar Guadi is a must but members only or NUS expect queues after 10:30pm but its open til 2am and serves a mean cocktail .. a must for all students
- the orange tree is nice
- Well I wouldn't call it a pub- but get yourselves to Time on a Saturday night. It's a bit out the way as it's next door to the train station- but if you really have to venture away from Braunstone Gate/Narborough Road- it's your best bet.
- The Vaults! Full of beardy old men but the cider is fabulous (and never less than 7%). Ditto the Ale Wagon, Charles St
- Lots of new bars opening near Braunstonegate - Lunablu, Loaf, Entropy, Quando - trendy studenty/early 30 something crowds
- Another missed pub in the guide.... Try O'neills on Loseby Lane. It has a good crowd of people most days. and the food is good if a little on the expensive side.
- The Orange Tree - High Street ( nice garden - heated at night ) say hello to Simpson at the bar!
Vodka Revolution - New Walk ( sound dress attitude during the week - turn thick as f**k at the weekends e.g. quote "NO sports trainers"
- Lunablu, braunstone gate. Minimalistic decor, kinda cool. Great toilets, fridge magnets supplied to play with whilst waiting for your mates! Good crowd, a bit of a mix, quite studenty, no dress codes. New place but massive popularity potential.
- The ultimate pubs in Leicester are Tabasco Jazz (off Belvoir st), The Court House, and Revolution (New Walk) The orange Tree (High St), and The Turky Cafe which has the coolest shot glasses in the world (Granby St)
- Everyone's missed out Weavers. Recently reopened. Opens Thurs/Fri/Sat only, but has a late license. Great place to sit and chill in comfort. Also, Revolution on New Walk - many flavoured vodkas to get you ratted.
- There are loads of good bars now, now a few clubs are needed, Varsity, Bar baristo, Edwards and someplace else are all good, and Lloyds is very good although quite expensive.
- The 39 steps is not clickey as everyonje seems to make out (normally people who've never set foot there). Average prices and some nice music.
Bar risa /jongleus is quite pricey in the bar but it's fun, colourful and is quite sizey(but it still gets packed on weekends). Upstairs is the comedy club jongleus, a great night out for about £10 you get three or four comedy acts which are excellent. After 11.30 the tables and chairs are cleared away and a dance floor emerges, cheesey, poppy music, a good laugh when the comedians have put you in the right mood.
Lizard lounge - a cool multi storey bar with chilled music throughout attractive decor expensive menu, averagley priced drinks. Comfortable big chairs, not much space even though there are three or four storeys, the actual rooms are quite small but still worth a visit.
- Loaded Dog - London Road. Student place with a bizarre pool table and loud TVs giant jenga, connect-4, table air-hokey. You know the kind of thing. Pump and Tap. Braunstone gate. VV laid back - spit and sawdust. Bands out back occasionally.
- Q bar is a gay bar on Wellington Street opposite the music library. As well as a bar it's also a meeting place for various lesbian/gay groups. They do reasonable food during the day and in the evening - Friday evening is women only. There's a nice atmos - a good place to relax and read the papers over a coffe or a beer.
- Crown in Tur Langton pretty good Three Handbags in Kibworth Varsity
- Best Pubs
- Globe: good for its range of beers
- The 3 Firkin pubs: If only for the name
- The Magazine: Good atmosphere
The Magazine is no more, it's been closed down for a few months now. A pity as it was (imho) the best pub in Leicester. The Magazine has closed down, and Bar Gaudi below Mosquito Coast has become the new place for good music and looking cool. - You could add The Pump and Tap to your list as it has a similar atmosphere but is sans pool table.
- There are now four Firkin pubs, the Physio and Firkin, the Fuzzok and Firkin, the Fourpence and Firkin and, the latest addition, the Fullback and Firkin, a huge place with big screen telly on Oxford Street. Although it's the size of a small warehouse it still gets very packed, as it's right by DeMontfort Uni's campus.
- The Charlotte - cheap and in the back room, you can hear the playing bands without paying!!
- Wilkies Continental Bar for really delicious beer.
- The Wyvern (usually 5 real ales! including Old Bailey, Abbots and Adnams Broadside).
- The Durham Ox (for Bass and Caffreys).
- Worst Pubs
- The Bank: Unless you wear a white shirt
- The Joiners: Foggy atmosphere
- The Lamplighter: Never had the right clothes to get in
- The Jug and Jive - never can hear people talk due to the PA.
- Jacey's Bar is a really cool place, and The Loaded Dog has just opened on London Road - definitely worth a visit if only for the giant Connect 4 and Jenga.
- A new Bass pub is opening in September on Welford Road similar to the Dry Dock in Leeds (giant boat) and will probably have the same name. Should be really good.
- The Soar Point-near DeMontfort uni
- Churchgate Tavern, on Churchgate by the clock tower, nice atmosphere, decent food, cheap, good stop off if going to a club
- The Barley Mow on Granby Street is an excellent spot - meals upstairs and what have you. The Wyvern has great beer, but the play hell if you take kids in.
- Cafe Bruxelles (High Street?)-Continental beer & good food.
