Hi My name is Diana Clark, previously Diana Hamper. I lived off Highlands Boulevard in Leigh and attended Belfairs High School for Girls between 1956-63. I would love to know the whereabouts of my old French teacher who was Joyce Head Nee Richardson. I believe she may still live in Leigh. Hello , I emigrated to Canada with my mum, dad, sister and brother in 1956 when i was 16. I lived on Eastwood rd., Leigh and went to Westleigh primary school and then to Westcliffe high school for girls from 1952-1956. Miss Gaukrogers(not sure of spelling) was the french teacher and Miss Bundock was the headmistress. Standing under the clock outside her office was a major punishment in thos e days. I am currently writing an article on the Fishermen of Leigh who rescued many soldiers from Dunkirk. If anyone has any information or pictures on the event I would be extremely grateful for it. Also, if there are any Leigh residents who were around at the time of the Dunkirk evacuations I would be very willing to interview them and use their quotes in my article if they would be good enough to give me contact information. I have a paperbook called :The Cockle Fishermen of Leigh-on-Sea: Info provided by Tony and Ron Meddle, prepared by Lyn Davies for the Leigh Heritage Centre. I am sure you have probably seen this, however thought i would send anyway. There is a picture of the Cockle boat Renown..this boat was launched shortly after WW11 to replace the Renown blown up by a mine when she was returning from Dunkirk, all aboard were lost. they are comemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial in St Clements Churchyard. LO.88 is the number of the boat, registered in London If you would like a copy and it is no longer available to purchase, I will have a copy made and send it to you if you would like. The specific was that two elderly ladies, both suffering somewhat from shock, were billeted on us after escaping from Dunkirk on a Leigh fishing boat. They could not communicate with u s, despite us having some french, and it was later rumoured they were speaking flemish. They stayed in the front room with us for about a week, slowly stopping their terrible shaking. In this time comms were only by gestures. I was then only 5 years old. The WVS took them away. (where to??) I also heard that two of the cockle boats (not of course bawleys properly so called) were lost at Dunkirk, one I think was The Vanguard, and maybe the other The Renown?? Some of you may have heard about a local father and son business starting on the internet? it is a great site and going places now, There are some terrific bargains on there from cars - Jewellery I buy and sell on it, no hassle at all - the price stated is the price you pay for the item, you can haggle or make an offer, kids clothes are really cheap as well. have a look I did and really glad I fo und it. There is also advertising on the site in the shapes of lorries. Ernest J. Depradines was a resident of Leigh up to his death in late 1960 at the age of 82 years. His wife Emily died early 1952 at the age of 72. I believe that they had a daughter Sheila born in 1917, what happened to her I do not know. Ernest was a ships chandler I am led to believe and he had a store in Leigh. Is there anyone who may have known this family or of the family business ? Or someone that can put me in the direction of finding details of this family Ernest was my mother's uncle.
