Cheap Food in Lewes, East Sussex*

Corner eateries, quick bites and the local chippy

Cheap Food
  • lewes is not cheap
  • Forfars, next to the Superdrug. Your basic little bakery, do crisps, drinks and things as well. Very decent prices on the whole but the shop's pretty small and avoid at all costs between about half three and quarter past four on weekdays - it's swooped upon by in excess of ten million ravenous schoolkids from surrounding comps and they're like locusts, leave the place completely bare.
  • Saritas Tea Rooms, North Chailey. Recently ate at Saritas which is in North Chailey. The food was reasonably priced, but only because it was so terrible, I think. I had a limp and lifeless cheese and pickle sandwich.... something you would think would be easy enough to get right but something was very amiss as the pickle had a very strange taste to it. My husband tried it too and agreed. I mentioned this the waitress who was rather rude despite my polite enquiry. What was unbelieveable though was when the owner then came out huffing and puffing proclaiming loudly "I just tasted that pickle and there's nothing wrong with it!!!!" I was speechless. My husband calmly asserted that we both thought it tasted unusual, to which we received a barrage of abuse. I don't think this establishment really understands anything about customer service.... or any kind of service to be honest. Really it's depressing that places like this still exist in this country in 2007... Only visit if you'd like to be abused.
  • please tell me Macdonalds isn't really coming to Lewes!

  • Bruditz is a specialist chocolate shop, sells yummy handmade chocolates, swiss and belgian chocolates, those jellybelly beans and fudge. TIP also sells broken chocolate cheap (table on the left) Every time in Lewes I end up there - it's on the way down the hill from the traffic lights(past an art shop)
  • see riverside sandwich company in cafes reviews
  • Circa is by far the best reataurant in Lewes and they've just one their first AA Rosette
  • The Shahnaz is the best Indian in town.
  • very filling in the wet
  • Harveys is all the food I need, especially Tom Paine ale.
  • Don't forget The Shinaz, an excellent curry house in the High Street. The foods always good and the staff are friendly. The food's good in The Dilraj too, but the staff are miserable and the service terrible - it's so successful as a takeaway that they don't have the time to serve the mere mortals who went to the trouble to book a table...
  • Mcdonalds opening soon.
  • There are a few good cafes and restaurants: the Panda Garden [top High Street] Chinese is very good. Avoid the Charcoal Grill at all costs [except if you're pissed: "Chilli sauce, sir? Do you want cheese on your cheesburger?"]
  • The Dil Raj is a great curry place, in Fisher Street. For a quiet meal, the Bistro at 20 Fisher Street is also pretty good, also the Pai Lin at the bottom of Station Street.
  • Needlemakers Cafe, a superb small place but wonderful food.In the Needlemakers building.(Historic)
