The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
  • Until this government bans smoking completely, you must visit Catlin's at 71 High STreet. The old curmudgeon still sells loose tobacco for hand-rolling and pipes, plus pipes, cigars and snuff. He also keeps a wide range of cheap and no so cheap confectionery. He is absolutely strict about age control and will ask all those he does not know for proof of age. Dont try it on with him. He will just turn you away.
  • Loose hand rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco (they seem to have over 50 sorts) is still sold by weight at Catlin's, 71 Lewes High STreet. Minimum weight is 15g
  • How do you get a combine harvester through Lewes, it gets stuck!!!
  • Elphicks garden centre is closing on the 31st of july 2003 (a great shame) and it would make a very nice (real ale) free house/wine bar/resteraunt
  • I wanted to get this message to the Town Hall somehow! Have they thought about building dykes alongside roads to prevent flooding? I used to live in Norfolk and they have had few floods since the Romans built dykes there and it is all below sea level.
  • how wet can it get??
  • The paddock. Great place to play football with horse's urine to drink when you get hot. Big tree to climb as well.
  • Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, it's got some lovely old buildings including the Norman Castle perched at the top of the town (for which the town is renowned). It's a town thats worth a visit, even if just for an afternoon. The town is most famous for its bonfire night festivities, held on the 5th November and is the biggest in England -- around 300,000 came in '94 and it's definitely worth a visit! Lewes has a few nice open spaces: the Grange Gardens (near the station) are very nice in the summer (very relaxing). There's a pretty poor leisure centre.
  • But here's a different view of the place:
      Best thing about Lewes:
      • Harvey's Elizabethan (only available at one time of the year)
      • Second Best: Harvey's Old
      • Third Best: Harvey's Sussex Maybe it's just that you have to drink a lot of it to appreciate it!
      • Worst thing about Lewes Burning an effigy of the Pope on Nov. 5th bonfire. (That's alienated me from 300,000 people - and I'm not even a Catholic)
      • Or this:
        • Best thing in Lewes = I live there and it's quaint.
        • Worst thing = No clubs although as mentioned there are loads of pubs.
        • The best thing about Lewes is Harveys Beer, despite what anyone else says. Bonfire night is also good but only comes once a year. Lots of pubs and some good churches especially Kings Church, Lewes which meets at the Priory School Sunday mornings at 10.00 (the office is at 16a Station Street).
        • The worst thing about Lewes is the fact that it only has the pubs for social life at night and this leaves kids out on the streets getting bored but don't let that put you off, it's a great place!
        • Best thing about Lewes is Harvey's: may the Head Brewer continue his sterling work and its only a matter of time before his art will be rewarded with a well deserved Sainthood. I felt I must put finger to keyboard as a devotee of the Best Bitter for more than 20 years and even living in Australia for the last 7 years has not dulled my enthusiasm for the brew. What dreams are made of.......!!
        • It is worth advertising the good points of Lewes in general because it doesn't have that many (apart from the inherent charm) after 11:30pm. A total lack of clubs and fast food places are to its detrement. Bonfire night is a superb occasion where several thousand locals and visitors line the streets to ritually burn things and get pissed. Usually an interesting combination.
