The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call

You can tell us more about Lowestoft.

Pubs
  • MARINERS REST!!! 60-62Rotterdam Road - Beer Festival 1st - 5th April 2010!!!
  • the triangle
  • ole frank is ace
  • Big two, O'reillys and notleys both good. notleys being expanded and really fashionable but oreillys open late and chep. Crown no longer seems to attract. Triangle pub great for real ale drinkers and a good bustling atmosphere
  • *Cough* SEA BREEZE! Well, if they dont get closed down by those gits who were drinking underage on TV on Rock School. I hate you GENE SIMMONS.
  • Fresh faced crowd- ha ha- yes some bars are packed so tight with under aged drinkers - you almost trip over the umbilical chords!! But won't mention which- the police will sort it now they have more power!
  • The Triangle. More real ales than you shake a stick at. Great for drinking and people watching
  • Sunday sessions at the Commodore in Oulton Broad. Not for the faint hearted!!
  • the blues and bloater mill road, looks a dive but is cheap for the drinks and has karaoke too, always have a good nite there
  • PUBS ARE KOOL IN LOWESTOFT!! CHEAP AND CHEERFUL!!
  • Starting at Top-End of town The crown has loads of things on throughout the week (karaoke, curry nights, pool comps, quiz, sumo wrestling) and then goes crazy at weekend. Oreillys is o.k but a bit rough at weekends. The volunteer is traditional with a 'sweet' landlady! The Harbour is a nice pub before the club, quiz on tues, pub idol on sunday. Notleys is a bit of a blokes pub, the place to go for Live football. The Edge has just had a makeover and is now over 21, quite nice in the summer being so close to the beach. The jolly sailors is great for food The Carlton is a great local and now shows live football on a big screen The Trowel and Hammer is another nice little Irish pub with some 'Strange' Live music The Tramways is crap The ship has recently had a makeover and is a great place to go for a drink or a meal The same with Livingstones, nice place for a drink and do a great carvery on a sunday morning.
  • THE OLD RED HOUSE, Carlton Colville. The only Lowestoft pub worthy of my hard earned cash.
  • Too many to mention, but there are pubs to suit all tastes here, be it music, food or a good old fashioned family pub you're after there's one around.
  • I dont know where the guy got is information from about the last post but it is very very unaccurate. For one the Crown Hotel is not shut and never has been. There was interest from Jd Weatherspoons but the offer was turned down due to alteration restirctions on the listed building. The crown now offers a student night on a Tuesday. Thursday through saturday offering top quality Dj's and choons in the rear room. munroes is a nicely decored pub but is always empty and hardly ever has and good music on. Oriles is still banging with live bands quizzs and karokee.
  • Monroe's is an excellent place to visit, serving a selection of delicious food. Has excellent bar staff and clients.....you should visit for a change!!
  • Trowel & Hammer, Pakefield. Cosy litttle pub with friendly local feel. The Bell Inn, Carlton Colville, warm rustic looking place, also serve great food. O'Reilly's, triangle market, Irish pub, kareoke wed nights, heaving at weekends. The Crown, High street, nice big place, very clubby weekend nights., loud music and lights. Hmm? The Triangle, triangle market , attracts lots of ageing hippies, arty types and students. Have Beer Festivals. Notley's, near East Point Pavillion. Boasts it's the pub before the club. Always packed, loud and full of very short skirts. fairly cheap booze, but requires stamina. Fisherman's Wharf, south pier, good atmos, nautical feel , live music and kareoke on sundays.
  • The Irish bar in town, O'Reillys great pub, and it has the longest bar in the country! The Foxburrow on quiz night, The corton hut. The crown is now shut, but it is about to reopen as a J.D Weatherspoons pub.
  • Triangle Tavern, Triangle Market, half way up the high street on the left. Live local bands every Thursday, Saturdays sometimes. Two distinct bars, known, oddly enough, as the Front Bar and the Back Bar. Good juke box in the Back Bar if you like Prodigy, head-type music. Front bars bit older, but very varied. Quiz nights Tuesday, involves a lot of shouting at the quiz master or mistress, just a fun thing. Beers good, lot of guest beers, recommend the Sickle from Green Jack. But beer's a funny thing. Landlady made it no football bar during the world cup, but if we manage to crawl through to the knock-out stage I bet that'll change...
  • A short trip into Oulton Broad and you will find the cheapest(?) and crustiest pub in town. Called Green Jacks situated just up the road from Oulton Broad North BR station. Go onto the industrial estate (direction of Boat World) Crap live bands, beer at a pound a pint (promos), and a crustie clientel. Last time I was there met a 15 year old girl who worked for me on work experience.
  • One good thing about Lowestoft, and God knows there aren't many, is the Geldeston Locks pub, between Lowestoft and Beccles. This is mainly accessible by boat but can be reached by a mile long winding dirt track. It's about 500 years old and looks it - very authentic and popular with crusties and bikers. Good beer, cheap, real fires, and you can camp outside by the river and the fields for nothing as long as you don't piss the barman off. This place is a real find and should be checked out as an alternative to "theme" pubs and all that bullshit.
Getting there: Out of Lowestoft through Oulton Broad towards Beccles. Over roundabout by Safeway store. Take next left - signs to Geldeston. Next right after 100 yards. Left at the end and look for the signpost to pub. Down the winding and unpromising looking track. BINGO!!!!
For the size of the place, Lowestoft does have a good number of pubs. My favourites include:
  • "The Wherry", in Oulton Broad. Lively pub, good selection of beer/lager. Has a function room called "The Brown Boat Suit", often open to 1.00 a.m on Friday night. Always very busy on Sunday night (until 11.00 p.m.), and teeming with lovely young ladies (honestly!!!).
  • "The Lady of the Lake", in Oulton Broad, good all-round pub. Big screen for watching sports.
  • "The Commodore", in Oulton Broad (Commodore Road), another good pub. Situated on broads, lovely in the summer. Just been refurbished, very smart. Near the "Wherry" as well!
  • The "Green Jack" brewery (Harbour Road), already been mentioned by another reader, but not as 'crusty' in my opinion as they might think. Live bands often, but the attraction of the brewery is that they brew their own beer, thus keeping prices low (starting £1.30 a pint), and have a lot of high gravity ones that are guarenteed to blow you away! I think that quite a few university students use this during their hols.
  • "The Crown", North end of Lowestoft. Smart pub, although a tad on the expensive side. Makes a good starting point for a pub-crawl of the town.
