  • New Brighton Football Club, were former members of the Football League through a number of incarnations of the club: "New Brighton Football Club is a side steeped in history and began in 1896 when the resort was popular with hundreds of thousands of summer holiday-makers. A group of local businessmen decided to launch a team, called New Brighton Tower FC, with the aim of getting it into the Football League thus providing a winter-time tourist attraction. They poured cash into the club, even signing a number of international players, and in their first season the side just missed out on promotion to the first division. But the team was unable to reach the big time and poor-profits led to the board deciding to close the club in 1901. In 1921, local physician Dr Tom Martlew launched a second club in the Lancashire League, a season later it was awarded Football League status but, once again, the glory was short lived. Despite winning their first four games and topping the Northern Division Three, the club was unable to sustain its winning streak and was relegated that very same season. In 1938 the club held Spurs to a 0-0 draw at Rake Lane in the fourth round of the FA Cup only to lose the replay and in 1956/7 won the record for the longest FA Cup run of a non-league side - rising through the preliminary rounds, qualifying stages and eventually reaching the fourth round where they lost to mighty Burnley. Kevin Keegan even makes a brief appearance in the club's history, he made his Liver pool debut playing against New Brighton in 1970. The present day club was founded in 1997 and plays in the West Cheshire League at Harrison Park in Wallasey Village."
