Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
  • Thanks to the people who said nice things about Baraka. Just to let you know that from 2009 Baraka Records will be renaming to Lucid. You can still expect the same awesome music, beautiful UV decor, free chai and our special friendly vibe. Lucid runs every second saturday at the Coven, arguably Oxfords best club. (Certainly the "raviest") heh heh
  • The Zodiac is the best one. There's the Cellar in the town centre off Cornmarket, both have good alternative nights.
  • The Cellar bar with it's night Intrusion for goth and metal. The Zodiac night club on Cowley Road has a range of good club nights from Disco Cheese, Indie to 'Sabotage', for the goths and punks of the city. There is Yates on George Street which is good for a dance.
  • Ah, the joys of Filth (The Studio) - there's something strangely addictive about dancing to crap music on a sticky floor. Vertigo at the Cellar and Narcissists at Baby Love play good indie/alternative. And Po Na Na has a special place in my heart, though that may be because I live 30 seconds away from it.
  • Park End where the inbreds congregate to further diminish the gene pool of humanity. All in a night's work.
  • jongleurs or bridge on a wednesday - students and cheap alcohol
  • Zodiac, Cowley Road
  • the oxford clubs are AWFUL, Dolly's used to be good to get lashed and dance around your handbag, but they now turned it in to something 'funky'?? the white room i belive, sorry its home at stop tap in this town
  • Correction to whoever said Baraka was a techno club, it's mainly Psychedelic Trance and a very varied chill-out. It's a good club by any standards, with some fairly well-known London DJ's making it up amazingly regularly. Good age-mix of people, very friendly atmosphere, free chai and hookah pipes. Probably the best club in Oxford. And you can sit down without getting chewing gum and beer all over your arse like at the Zodiac. Plus the bouncers don't openly deride and insult you for being a trance-fiend.
  • The club situation in Oxford is one of the grimmest in sunny England. If you are a Burberry Boy and your car has been utterly Garryfied then you will be in your element. Best without a doubt is Playground at brookes Uni on a wednesday night, utter carnage if you are lucky enough to get a ticket.
  • Well, Bar Med is a nice place to chill out in the day, and as I've heard, good at night too. But that's all.
  • Baraka @ Coven: Baraka relaunched last month with an incredible night. Impossible to describe without being there. The atmosphere was fantastically sociable ( you could actually talk to people)in the chillout, and what a chillout it was - free chai tea, flapjacks and hubbly bubbly pipes, comfy seating and a stall selling laughing gas. The dance floor was busy with DJs playing excellent psychedelic trance keeping the revellers happy. Check out the pictures and videos on the website: www.antiworld.net/baraka. See you all at the next one on saturday 14th June
  • boutique at love was the best for interesting indie/electro sounds, but now seems to have passed away. best stick to panic at latino's, it's pretty cool. avoid the zodiac. it is evil. oh and the rest aren't worth mentioning. psh.
  • Oxford Brookes :- 1200 capacity, different music for different nights of the week, also their smaller venue Morals bar for interesting nights to the pub with different themes everyday of the week. This is the place to be, also wednesday night in Brookes is the biggest night night in Oxford reaching nearly 1200 at full capacity. Has to be done. http://www.thesu.com/venue.htm (scroll down the left hand side).
  • Panic at Latinos is shit, don't believe them. They play the same stuff every week too, and it's boring studenty stuck-in-the-90's alternative rock. Try boutique at the love bar on tuesdays, it's a little better
  • park end good for fights, but best club now is the bridge (formerly the gallery) - esp. good on hip hop nights. or if you're desperate: studio, dtm's, po na na, coven, zodiac, latino's, genesis, moods, yates's etc etc
  • Coven II - hottest club pre cream/m.o.s made so by jt
  • I can't really recommend and Club in Oxford - They are all pants. However the Zodiac, Cowley Road offers good music and they get some well known bands in. However the levels of cleanliness in there are somewhat desirable!
  • The Jam Factory is a newly awakened club near the train station in Oxford. This is where you should be to catch lowdown 'n' dirty techouse and to be around happy people. Pure Sheng is the techouse night (Saturday), with the North's finest DJs. Entrance only £4. Not to be missed.
  • PANIC in Club Latino's (on the Cowley Roundabout) every other Wednesday night. It's the only place for a indie/rock fan to hear decent music and party at the same time. Transformation doesn't count--they play the same songs every week.
  • Having moved to Oxford from Birmingham the clubs are all laughable. Don't expect to come to Oxford for a pumpin night! If you can get into The Purple Turtle (Under The Union - entrance Cornmarket) its got a good atmosphere if sweaty and loud. You'll need to get a member to sign you in. Yes even if you're NUS.
  • Park End is buzzin on a thursday. Best nite IMO! Free before 10:30pm! R'n'B room is very good. Moods (formerly Yes-But), is a nice bar/club. That's it all da rest of them are pretty standard pikey/towny/gippo spots where a punch up ringside seat is up for grabs!!!!!!!!
  • Park End: fairly good all round except the food but what do u expect from a night club. Quese form quickly so get in early. Down Town Manhattens: usually frequented by older clubbers and people who couldn't be bothered to walk to the other clubs. Old Fire Station: nice place good music but make sure you have your wits about you as you enter or you'll fall down the stairs. Zodiac: on the cowley road this is one for the lovers of alternative musicget there early though because it gets full up quickly.
  • Clubs in Oxford are generally crap. DTMs, very, very, very, very crap, The Studio (formerly 5th Avenue) crap (served its perpose in my 'younger' days. Park End is expensive, not worth £7. The Coven full of drugged up, get your shirt off, hard house freaks. PoNaNa O.K, kinda funky. What used to be Yesbut, small. Zodiac, depends whats on or whos DJing. Thrist is your best bet only open to 1am but free. But basically go to London only an hour by coach (get the tube it has a tiolet).
  • For reasonably big name house DJ's the Coven on Oxpens road near the ice rink is the only place to go. For Drum n Bass the Source is held monthly at the Zodiac on the Cowley Road. Garage DJ's play here as well. For Hip Hop, the Cellar on Queen Street is best. Park End, Fifth Avenue and DTM's should all be avoided like the plague ( unless you want to get into a fight with/ pull some squaddie.
  • Shit. But London is only £6.50 return on the bus, which runs 24 hours a day.
  • DTMs..... It sucks. The Zodiac is the best. Try Fuzzy Ducks for lots of top Brooks Uni totty.
  • Baraka - monthly techno night at The Coven. Strange Fruit - every Wednesday at the Yesbut bar. Free entry, expensive cocktails - watch lots of indie kids trying to dance to Belle and Sebastian.
  • DownTownManhattans under the Apollo - GO THERE - there are many creatures from other planets and it is endlessly amusing finding out which ones!
  • Beauchamps - a recently opened gay club, if you're not that way inclined it is a good place to go early on for a drink as it doesn't get busy 'til 12.00.
  • The Kitten Klub at The Covern II. (I was very drunk at the time.) I went to a great night there - hard house and techno from 'Will' and 'Calvin' - Calvin is Benjamin Jones, an architecture student at Westminster University and the finest young dj on the face of the planet! He's up in Oxford visiting his dearest, the KK promoter Lisa - she's somewhere in Oxford doing Geography.
  • Oxford has quite a few clubs, but one that can't be forgotton is Park End Club, different guest DJs all the time, always worth a visit.
