- The Glock rock pub, The Chequers, Duke of York, Hobgoblin.
- The Gloc in gloucester green is oxford premier rock pub. Few bikers, generally a friendly crowd. Good jukebox selection. A pint and a steak for under a tenner.
The Chequers on high street, friendly staff, lots of space, pool tables.
Copa, comfy chairs. can be expensive and busy but nic place with gallery level.
- The Goose is a good pub, you'll find it round the back of the Oxford New Theatre (i.e. what was the Appolo Theatre).
- Please do not go by anything these people have said. There are so many lovely pubs in oxford that you must explore by yourself. Basically though, draw a diagonal line through carfax - st aldates and high st are nice and have lovely pubs with some students (not all irritating) and respectable people. George st, park end St, etc have a bunch of 'wankers' - the place to go if you want a fight or to pull a drunk and incapable 17 year old girl - all good eh? Sadly some lovely pubs get caught in that area - eg. the Gloucester Arms, Old School. Still as i say - you need to check it out yourself. Oxford has something for everyone!
- Bookbinders in Jericho is nice. The staff are friendly, the beer is pleasant, although highly prices, and the scenery is reminiscent of a saloon. Sadly most of the customers are meat-heads with no necks.
- the Hobgoblin on the cowley road is an awesome pub, but you do pay for the quality. really nice pub in the summer when the garden is bustling
- The Turf Tavern, surrounded by old walls and building in the centre of Oxford, burners outside in the winter, sheilded from traffic.
- so ,so many, avoid the trout at wytham is absolutly awful , handbags at the ready to get a table, much better are the waterman's on osney, the lamb and flag (st Giles), used to be a nice one in Jerico , but the've now turned it into a 'sports' bar,
- Walter Mitty's, Bridge St, Osney Mead - Stranger than fiction & the beer's good
- Avoid the city centre pubs and the ones on George Street especially the Goose which is renowned for selling pints of fizzy piss to shell suited townies and their tarts then sitting back to watch the sovereign rings fly. Jericho is a good (but expensive) place for pubs. Nothing surpasses the Trout in summer for sitting all day in the sun next to the river getting happily pissed.
- The best thing about Oxford. Whatever type of pub you want, you will find it. Small, quiet, loud, packed, quaint, modern, trendy, "classic", violent, peaceful - you name it, it's there.
- King's Arms. Not because it's particularly great, but it is absolutely central, and large enough to meet a group. *No* pub in Oxford proper attracts a "fresh faced crowd." They are also absolutely strict about closing times, as well.
- Rose and Crown in North Parade - a proper pub with no piped musak and a ban on mobiles.
- the star on some st off cowley is great. the glock is unbeatable. radcliffe arms and hobgoblin do brill cheapo food. there's also a gem of a pub lurking in jericho, but wouldnt want to mention that one, you plebs might end up there.
- The Turf, round the back of hertford college. Wicked.
- The Pub Oxford seems to sell the cheapest beer. £1.80 for a pint of Carling if you have a Yellow Card. Another huge bonus is that the clientele comprises mainly of locals and Brookes students, so the rah rah atmosphere of most pubs in town is missing.
Another nice, normal place is Yates's. Cheap as chips. Talking of chips, try the spiral fries with cheese and never eat at a restaurant again.
- anywhere away from w*nker oxford university students
- The Turf Tavern on Holywell Street is the Catz Students' 'Unofficial Pub'. Not enough sheltered seats for when it's raining though.
Don't go to The Goose (at Gloucester Green) for food.
- The Chequers, St Thomas Street Oxford - Becoming one of THE Best pubs I know to drink in. Not only are the staff friendly and cheerful, but the drinks are served (Fairly!) Cheaply, they have even branched out into Cocktails. It's a plcae where Students and Locals mix happily....Which is fast becoming a rare site in Oxford. Plus I go there, which is an added bonus....!!
- My vote for the Goose just off George Street. What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up with good value drinks and helpful staff.
- Cafe Coco's - the best daiquiri in England, excellent food and a good vibe
- The Watermans - proper family old-man pub. Drink, and avoid the kids in town.
- O.X. One is now Que Pasa excellent service great food slightly expensive food but the portions more than make up for it.
- The Jericho, now sadly a Scream chain pub, is where Radiohead got started. (The room upstairs has the very stage). Jude the Obscure next door is much nicer and Noel Reilly the owner is quite a character.
- The pub food at the Radcliffe Arms (Jericho) is really nice and really cheap.
- white horse
- The Duke of Cambridge on Little Clarendon Street is one of the best, get there before 7.30 pm and you'll pay half price for the coctails. If this suits you, Maxwell's on Queen Street also sell half priced cocktails before 8.00 pm or on production of a valid n.u.s card.
Freud's has live jazz on a Saturday night.
Po na na on St. Giles is good at the weekends, get there before 10.00 and you won't have to pay to get in. Ditto the Cellar opn Queen
street. The Cock and Camel on Gloucester Green is great for watching the world go by.
- Pub Oxford on the Plain(hi Wiff if you are still around?!)and its younger brother: The Jehrico on Walton Street
- I think it's called the Iffley Tavern. Near the river but not on a road – you get there by following the towpath along the river parallel to Abingdon Road. Other nice river pubs are the Perch and the Trout, both somewhere up Port Meadow direction.
- Forget the pubs, why not go to the excellent bar in All Soul's College. Despite it's name, the students here are the friendliest in Oxford, and the beer flows freely at all times of day.
- The Gloucester Arms, down Friars Entry off Gloucester Green, AKA the rock pub is a friendly pub.
- The Brittannia in Headington is a great gay pub, can be a bit quiet during the week but at the weekend it's the place to be before heading off into town.
- Westgate is now O.X.One. Still has a late licence and is quite good, Music better thanin the socalled
clubs.
Pubs in George street are the most modern and best, with Wig and Pen, Yates, O'neals
Cock and Camel, Firkin Pub oand the OFS.
- The Turf Tavern. Few people unfamiliar with Oxford will ever manage to find it, well hidden as it is near Holywell St. Nevertheless, this pub is one of the best in Oxford. It must certainly be one of the oldest, and navigating the interior is as hard as finding it in the first place. In winter mulled wine and braziers make an appearance, too. Also necessary to mention is the Angel and Greyhound just beyond the Magdalen Bridge. Good atmosphere, and posesses both a meadow by the Cherwell river and a huge selection of boardgames.
- When talking of the 'Big Pubs of Oxford' Yates Wine Lodge musn't be forgotten, a very big, popular, happy pub, packed solid at weekends. Also the Westgate Pub, open 'til 2 in the morning at weekends, another bustling, busy, popular venue, good for a late drink (or five!).
- You simply can't leave out the Turf Tavern down the passage next to the sheldonian. Difficult to find but worth looking. Lots of types of beer and extremely popular most of the time, which means long waits at the bar for getting served.
- The Eagle and Child on St Giles, or The Lamb and Flag on the other side of the Road. Both turf you out onto the hard shoulder as soon as drinking up time comes around, and can be rude about it too.
- The infamous New Inn on Cowley Road. The Local of many celebrities including Ride, Radiohead and Supergrass. Good tunes and good crowd. The Star Royal... see New Inn.
- Alex'n' Paul recommend the Cricketer's Arms on Iffley Road; the Bullingdon Arms and the New Inn on Cowley Road.
- You can't have a page about Oxford's pubs and not even mention the pubs on Gloucester Green in the centre of Oxford. These are convieniently near the bus station if you are travelling and if you like big pubs these are three of the many good places to go...
- The Old School also big pub with slightly smarter decor. Also packed on Friday/Saturday in fact most of the time! The music and disco atmosphere can sometimes be oppressive.
- If you want somewhere slightly posher and quieter also in Gloucester Green is the Old Fire Station. This also becomes a demi-club later and starts charging admission so get there early and get in free!
- The Fir Tree, on Iffley Road, should be mentioned as a top friendly pub that serves Morells ale.
- The James Street Tavern is well worth a visit (in James Street just off the Cowley Road).
- The Westgate describes itself as "Oxford's most entertaining public house"
- The Head of the River is the best during the winter months. There aren't too many people and you and a bunch of friends can huddle together at a table and drink in the Irish Coffee. Also, the Turf Tavern off of Catte Street is wonderful because they have a wood fire burning in the middle of their outside courtyard in the winter. It really brings people together! Better yet, if you know a student get he or she to take you to their college's bar. I was at Hertford and our bar was great--especially on the weekends!
