If anyone has any information about LAURENCE EDWIN WILLIS my brother and i are still looking for any family connections. Our Mum and Dad lived at 7 Hawthorne Grove in 1954. It would be brilliant if I could get some information that would help to track down any of our remaining family members.

I am seeking information on the Dove family from Penge who lived in Anerley during the 1940s. William and Laura and their son Eric were all living around Anerley Hill during 1944 and am seeking any information on them before or after that period.

| looking for family connections

Hi, I was born in Penge in Hawthorn grove in 1954 lived there till 1967. My father left home when i was 9 years old and i havent seen him since. I am currently writing a book about my own life and i know virtually nothing about my family from the penge area and would be grateful to hear from anyone who remembers or has any information that can help. My father was Laurence Edwin Willis, we lived at number 7 Hawthorne grove, the area then was still a bombed out area and a lot of the houses were damaged or derilict. I grew up in the period when penge was being redeveloped and remember well the clearing of the old and the building of the new, in fact we were some of the first families to move into the new Tower blocks( ours was Kent Towers). My grandfather had a scrap yard opposite our house in Hawthorne grove, and i wonder if there is any reference of that anywhere. I also remember my cousin Bobby willis lived in Surry towers. Apart from the memories of my school days etc and running wild around the bomb site in the area, the only other significant people i remember are the beatles as my uncle worked with them for a while in the early days.
I have also been told by some relative years ago, that my great grandfather was caretaker/groundsman at the Crystal palace, so i would welcome any information from anyone who remembers any of these people or can help!
My step father moved us away from london when i was 12, and i ran away from home when i was 16 to stay with a relative in the USA and joined the US Marines ending up serving 3 tours in Vietnam. I have my own 4x4 tours buisness now in the Canaries( nothing big, just 2 jeeps) and i have wanted to write about my life for a while now because i suffered terrible abuse as a child, especially after my father left me and my step father came into my life, so it would be good to find out more about my real family. I do know my father was in the military before settling down in Penge.
Any Help appreciated!! ... more >>

Laurie,
By the purest of flukes (while carrying out a Google search)I came across your message asking for information connected with your early life in Penge. I don't think I can give you an enourmous amount of information, but I used to live next door to you at No 5 Hawthorn Grove until we all moved into the tower blocks (my parents and I went to Kent Tower). I was (and as far as I know still am) about three or four years younger than you when we lived in Hawthorne Grove, so you will appreciate that I was barely above the age of reason. That said, I do remember you and the house you lived in. I remember your mother's name was Doreen. I have vague memories of visiting your house. I recall that the basement - or lower ground floor - windows were missing at the front of the house and that a lot of junk was kept down there. I also recall that there was what seemed to me an old man living upstairs. My mother has told me it was a couple who used to argue a lot. She is trying to remember their names.
Anything my mother can remember is likely to be trivial, day to day stuff, but you never know. She did comment to me that your stepfather used to treat your mother very badly. She had the idea that when you moved from Kent Tower you went to West Wickham. We left Penge the same year you did.
I was sorry to read that you have had such an unhappy childhood. I am sure you deserved much better. My mother said you were a lovey boy (her precise words). Please be assured that whetever details I can get regarding your life in Hawthorne Grove I will pass on to you.
Best wishes and good luck with the book. ... more >>

I am Emma, the youngest sister of Ann, the sender of the above messages. We have been in contact for over a month now, we met for the first time a couple of weeks ago and are getting on very well.
I am trying to help Ann in her search for other relatives and for more information about our mother.
I lived with mum (or "Beattie" as she was known) and my stepfather Alfie Ward at 41 Kenilworth Road between 1972 and 1988. As stated, mum worked at the launderette in Penge High Street for over 10 years until 1990 when she passed away; she was well loved by both the staff and customers.
Other people who may remember "Beattie" are those who attended "Dr Penny's" group therapy sessions at "Laurel House" (now known as Penge Mental Health Centre) in Blean Grove, Penge, between 1974 and about 1980; mum used to go along 'cos she suffered with depression and agoraphobia. She had dark hair which she liked to perm (she wore a head scarf tied under the chin, & always had a tartan shopping trolley), was very down-to-earth, liked her ciggies and had a Welsh accent.
In the late 70's, mum also worked as a cleaner for a while at "Kentwood School for Boys" in Penge. Her boss was a "Mr McDonald".
Sadly, I cannot grant Ann's wish for a picture of our mum. I had an abusive relationship with my stepfather Alf so the last time I saw him was on the day of mum's funeral, after which I had a row with him, (because he was making innuendoes and generally being provocative towards me) stormed out of the house and never went back. When I later wrote to him requesting photographs and other keepsakes of mum, he was totally uncooperative. (he also lied to me about where mum's ashes were scattered). Apparently, Alf died in about 1998.
So I would be particularly grateful to anyone who can grant Ann's request for pictures of mum because this would benefit me too! Anyone who remembers mum and me is also welcome to get in contact. ... more >>
