Cringing Cult of Celebrity
  • One of the main characters in James Clavell's "King Rat" is called Peter Marlowe and when asked where he comes from he says: "Portchester. That's a little hamlet on the south coast. In Hampshire."
  • Fred Everest, (d. 1999 RIP), fisherman, philosopher (although he didn't know it), friend, the only man I have ever known who could call a thrush from the trees to his feet to feed (and who would turn up on the door at 10pm at night with a carrier bag full of the finest mud cockles in England saying "ere you go...jus dug these up")
