  • The guy who drives around on a mobility scooter listening to 80's ballads, the crazy guy who wears shorts all year round and smokes a pipe while walking like John Cleese.
  • Cheg!
  • John the Song has taken his celebrity to new heights with appearances on Pop Idol, assurances from the panel that he couldn't sing and had no talent failed to convince him. Ken Evans Landlord of the Pier in the 80's and the Knights Arms before that. He stood about 6'8" and must have weighed in at well over 20st with a big 'Grizzly Adams beard. The clientele of the Pier during his tenure were notoriously 'fresh faced' and consequently the place was rammed every weekend. ZZ Top blasting out of the juke-box in the Sand Bar and a crowd around the bar-football table and pinball machine. He had a brother working there as 'pot-man' who was rumoured to have recently been released from a manslaughter stretch, he would gently cajole you into extending your purchases with well chosen phrases such as "If you lads can't drink quicker than that then f*ck off!" Ken was a legend, he was a pillar of the Porthcawl sea rescue and once ran from the pub and dived in to rescue a lad he'd just seen being washed into the sea. The Knights Arms up until the early 80's was a notorious bikers pub, Ken had previously been Landlord there, rumour was that he'd ended a particularly vicious argument in the Knights with a 12-bore shotgun. I certainly saw him charging out from behind the bar of the Pier into a fracas brandishing an enormous wooden mallet, the Cornelly boys who'd started the fight didn't hang about to see if he was serious about using it! In the heavy snows of ?82? I saw Ken wading through deep drifts in Lias Road, wearing Bermuda shorts, flip-flops and a T-shirt bearing the legend 'F*ck Winter'.

  • Porthcawl is full of tramps. Ya gotta watch out far this one called Norman. dangerous bastard. He may still have a cast on his leg. anyway on 11/11 there is always a good performance in the band stand, in town. Many WW2 veterans turn up.
  • Look out for "John the Song". And then of course the tramp that looks like Bill Oddie, who hangs out on the bench next to John st. arcade. He's quite good entertainment when your pissed out of your skull.
  • Septic Clown is always good for a laugh, he's the sad bastard with an accordion, a clown mask and a fag hanging out of the mouth hole. Always a treat for the kids. Someone put the bloke down, or give him a pile of Big Issue, far less degrading for him.
  • President White sometimes busk, they'd better get used to it, they'll go nowhere with the awful music they play.
  • John the Song is a tad fruity,
  • John The Song - You'll find him in John Street every other day, singing (abeit badly) to hits of the past. Also, don't take the piss 'cause he's not a well bloke. Have some sympathy.
  • Hear John the Song's multi platinum single on the juke box at the old Pier A side 'Everybody loves Friday Night' B side 'Everybody loves Saturday Night'
  • John the Song - classic guy, tutored some of my friends in Maths but is often found on the main street singing current chart songs as if you would sing them in church!!
