Roy Conway.................. by Roy Conway (Member 10063774) on 27-Mar-2002
My name is Roy Conway (71 y/o). I was a Purbrookian (and Widleyian) during the war years.
When the family moved from Langstone in 1940, we relocated in The Brow (#92), Widley. In 1942 we moved to Bushy Mead (#54), Purbrook and in 1948 we moved back into the City, Goldsmith Avenue (#15), Southsea.
In 1954, after serving three years in the RAF, marrying and serving a short time with the Southern ... more >>

  • Re: Roy Conway.................. by kerry o'brien (Member 10193175) on 10-Sep-2006
Hi Roy, I wonder if you can help me? I'm trying to find a family on behalf of my mother in law. We're looking for a family that lived at 81 The Brow in Widley Purbrook in 1945. As you lived in that area at the same time I wondered if you knew of the family and were able to give me any information at all. Their names were Mr Arthur Smith and Mrs Muriel Smith. Thank you.

  • Re: Roy Conway.................. by samantha (Member 10193977) on 20-Sep-2006
hi, i was surfing on the net and thought i'd put in my old address out of pure curiosity, "92 the brow, widley", then your text came up, i can't exactley remember how many years i lived there as i was only young, i must ask my parents, but i can remember the golf course behind the garden, my 3 brothers and i quite often pinched the balls that where on the copses and sold them back to the golfers !... more >>

  • Re: Arthur & Muriel Smith by Roy Conway (Member 10063774) on 2-Aug-2007
Sorry Kerry, I have no recolection of the subject persons. When I lived at 92 The Brow I was 10/12 years old and probably payed little attention to neighbors other than those who had kids my age or were immediately adjacent, eg., the Garland's, Batty's, Jones's and Bugden's.

  • Re: Samantha of 92 The Brow by Roy Conway (Member 10063774) on 2-Aug-2007
    Hi Samantha.

I have fond memories of 92, it was a lovely house with the back garden backing onto open farmland and many copses. I moved there in 1940 just as the Germans began to blitz Pompey. Most of our nights during the winter of '40/'41 were spent in a Anderson air raid shelter burried deep at the back of the garden. A huge bomb fell about 100 m. behind the house, just beyond the copse, and... more >>

I have some information about the family of a Violet White who may be the one you refer to. Her father was J Arthur White and mother Nellie Florence Ferris (sometimes called Ivy). She had 5 or 6 brothers and sisters including Alan, Rodney and David. I'd like to know more about this family so if there's a link please get in touch.
