My name is Roy Conway (71 y/o). I was a Purbrookian (and Widleyian) during the war years. When the family moved from Langstone in 1940, we relocated in The Brow (#92), Widley. In 1942 we moved to Bushy Mead (#54), Purbrook and in 1948 we moved back into the City, Goldsmith Avenue (#15), Southsea. In 1954, after serving three years in the RAF, marrying and serving a short time with the Southern Electricity Board, I emigrated to Canada. During the Widley/Purbrook years I attended Alameda Road School and Purbrook Park County High School. I have been able to make contact with two of my old friends of the 40's through other web sites, but I'm sure that there are many others out there with computers and access to this web site that may remember my name. In particular, I would like to know what happened to my first love, Gwen Eggerton. Gwen attended PPCHS with me and lived in Denmead. When I lived at 92 The Brow I was 10/12 years old and probably payed little attention to neighbors other than those who had kids my age or were immediately adjacent, eg., the Garland's, Batty's, Jones's and Bugden's. I have fond memories of 92, it was a lovely house with the back garden backing onto open farmland and many copses. I moved there in 1940 just as the Germans began to blitz Pompey. Most of our nights during the winter of '40/'41 were spent in a Anderson air raid shelter burried deep at the back of the garden. A huge bomb fell about 100 m. behind the house, just beyond the copse, and spewed clay and chalk on the roof of the house as well as breaking a few windows. We were also greeted to constant noise of anti-aircraft gunfire as we were not far from the Crookhorn gun enplacements. Whenever I visit the area (I'm in Canada now), I also like to drive by all my old residences in the Portsmouth area. It's nice to see that they have all been very well maintained.
