The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
- fit laaaaaaaads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Does anyone have old photographs of rainhill. Such as the ones you see in the local public houses?
- I have recently been on holiday and seen a wonderfull town with lots of things for all ages and i am just going to suggest afew for adults and young children at the moment. I think that having a garden with lots of flowers and trees with a picnic area and play area would give tourists something to look at this could be built at the corner of Rainhill utds football field. I also saw a tram which was in freqeunt use to transport people round the village and gives a tour of all the old stuff this could be built going from one end of Rainhill to Prescot this would in time bring money to the two villages giving them the opertunity to build new places for locals and tourists to visit and do up all the rundon buildings. I also saw in the public parks flowers round the edges brightening up the place. I think that instead of building all these ugly terraced houses we should build bungalowes and detached houses these look better and dont block sunlight from neighbours houses. Thank you for reading my messages and i hope you take some of my ideas.
- What can be done to make rainhill better?
- Rainhill hit the headlines back in 1829. Yep 1829. It was one end of the Famous Rainhill trials, which to the uninitiated, was the famous race between Stevensons Rocket, The Sans Periel and Novelty. The Rocket won at an almost un heard of speed of 29mph. Yep that was FAST in them days. It was a trial of steem engines. (Those trains that smoke, like in the cowboy films!) It also saw the worlds first scew bridge. That is the bridge that carries the A57 over the railway is not at a right angle to the tracks. This was a first back in 1829. The bridge is still there.
- Huskisson, the then Home Secretary was the first person to be killed by a railway engine when hit by George Stephenson's "Rocket" in the Rainhill Trials (1829).
- Good Local cricket team - Rainhill CC are high flyers in the Merseyside Competition League, in 2000 seaon they never lost a game and won the league and cup double.
- "The Loony Bin", Rainhill Mental Hopital, which closed down, God knows, about 15-20 years ago used to be listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest hopsital of any kind in the UK. The Loony on the Bus was an every day occurance on the way to school in Prescot!!!
Rainhill's main claim to fame was the Rainhill Locomotive Trials of 1829 - a competition to find a steam train capable of carrying passengers. It was won by George Stephenson's "Rocket".
