I fell in love with a girl who worked there. Her name was Yvonne Hayes. She lived at 3 Ansdell Villa Road. She had a brother called Steve. I was hoping member Robert H Rippon who lived in that Street would remember the Family? I am now liv ing in Australia and feeling very homesick. Can Robert or anyone else know any details of her? Hi I am one of the Crawford boys, and I have just found this site by accident while trying to find a picture of a H3 Crosville bus, Lol.
I was surprised to see our name here. Our family is all split up now. I never knew the club at St James was called the attic even though i went there myself. I am writing my autobiography which has a large chapter on Rainhill, hence my trying to find a H3.

Did Gill have reddish hair? If it is the smae Gill she married Mike Porter and went to live in South Africa. I think her dad had something to do with the NSPCC though I think he died when she was young. She was tallish and slim.

Hi Russ long time no see.I certainly do remember Mark.He was a big help with his electrical skills.I've been living in Whiston Village since 1981 so don't get to Rainhill much these days.Anyway nice to hear from you.
- Re: rainhill
by David Norman (Member 10229890) on 31-Jul-2008
The sweetshop was called "Bettys". A great old fashioned sweetshop with jars of everything imaginable that you would buy in a quarter pound - or 2oz - and get them in a concical paper bag. Wow! what memories. Me and my sister Janet were trying to recall the line of shops on the other side of Warrington Road - all family run - in the early/mid 60s. From left to right (please correct us if we're wrong)
Jack Philips's newsagents
The cafe / snack bar
A bit blank...Was Kenwrights Drapers store next to that?
The chemists - was that run by the Lightfoots?
The butchers - Welsbys?
The Wool Shop
The bakers / cake shop - also run by the Welsbys
Monaghans hardware store
Howarths greengrocers
.. and then Reynolds supermarket
The post office was run by the Lowe family
Next to the Vic was the Village Chippy that did the best spam fritters ever! A small split (chips and mushy peas) was a shilling - and when they put it up by a penny we'd make a point of asking for a "One and a penny shilling split please" ... more >>

Depends when you are thinking about. When I was growing up we knew the sweetshop as Betty Hughes'.
- Re: rainhill
by Stephencebu (Member 10259160) on 13-Mar-2011
After Betty Hughes it became known as Pownalls. It seemed to be mother and son and they let it go a bit. This was during the 1970's. The son killed a girl in the entry at Tasker terrace and was done for murder. After that it became a Mexican restaurant.

Hi. I remember Ma Jessop well, although I was younger in those days. King George V, VII, and Elizabeth, use to visit her shop, although I never saw them. The stuff in there, if you could stand the smell, was a fortune.
I have only become a memeber tonight, as I am trying to find out, what Ma Jessops first name was.

Only just seen Robin Rippon's reply concerning Geoff. I stand corrected, I really thought he was the politician. Sorry to hear he died. I knew most of the Rippon family but only by sight. We lived in one of those cottages opposite the 'Coach and Horses'. I was four years behind Enid at Whiston Central School.Geoff went to Rainhill village school same time as my brother Bob.

| Not as bad as people say..

Came accross this site while searching google.
Read a few comment where people say it's a terrible area, and that it's 'scouse'. First of all, it's still one of the nicest areas in the St. Helens Council area, yes, there are quite a few idiots around, but more often than not it is nice and quiet.
My second point is that it is not 'Scouse'. People are under the influence that if you live in the Merseyside area, then you are 'scouse'. Rainhill has a hybrid accent, varying from Plasic Scouse and Woolyback.
I attended Rainhill High School from 1999-2004 but kept a low profile.
As I said, found this site on google, on the BMX/Skating search. There was one main, can't be too sure if it is still there, not been there for years, called 'The Menx'. This is a trail for bmx/mountain bikes/and eevn motoX bikes at one point that lays behind the mental institution called Scott Clinic. This is found down Rainhill road, just where Eltonhead Road meets Rainhill Road...in the woodland at the back.
It's quite a quiet and small place, but has a population of 22,000 people (told to me by my former Geography and form tutor in Rainhill High School). It's mainly quiet during school time, and after 9-10pm (All the 'Yobs' seem to go in then).
Pubs in Rainhill:
The Commercial - Opposite the train station - Local, friendly and warm place
The Manor Farm - Other end of Rainhill (By the Stoops Roundabout) - Old pub, very friendly and well kept.
The Ship Inn - Opposite St. Barts Chuch - More expensive, but warm friendly pub, and very well kept.
The Victoria - Recently refurbished, nice welll kept pub.
Those are the pubs I prefere most in Rainhill, although there are many more.

I live on the former grounds of RainHill Hopsital which is now a housing estate, know as the Larches. Im trying to locate the history about the grounds on which my house is built in relation to what was there when the Hospital was in force. There have ben a few weird incidents happening and my dog goes beserk when out in the garden and barks at nothing!!!
Im at the back of the estate and overlook a listed wall which was part of the hospital (im assuming the back of the hospital)
Any info would be most welcome and appreciated ... more >>

Funny you should mention this, years ago there used to be a tale of a hooded monk that walked the grounds of the ''Menc'' as we called it.Also there used to be a farmer called Major who leased land that the hospital owned,he told tales of weird goings on.Try this web site

Hi
I used to work on the annex side of the road, that's the side on the right as you come from St Helens. The site of Rainhill Hospital sits on top of a much older structure. Under the main corridor by ward 11 was an opening, in the walls of which were hooks to which the unfortunates were chained. This area was out of bounds to the staff but I knew someone with a key and got to look around.
Presumably this area was bulldozed when the hospital closed but I would bet 10 pounds that the chained area survives as it was hewn out of the sandstone. I'm wondering whether the hooded monk isn't from that area and that perhaps what your dog is picking up is the spirits of those poor unfortunate people who got incarcerated.
I tell you, England's dim and distant past was no place to be mentally sick.
I could also tell you stories about the research that used to take place there well into the 1970s but that's another story and one which is probably too close to home. Does anyone else remember the research ward that belonged to Liverpool University?
Michael
Best wishes

Poeple who live (ok well born in Rainhill) are NOT scousers... plastic one yes, i hate the rainhill accent, sounds awful, and this is coming from a lad from south liverpool
- Re: Rainhill
by Stephencebu (Member 10259160) on 13-Mar-2011
I'm also from south Liverpool and lived in Rainhill for some time. When we first moved there our address was rainhill, Lancashire!
The young lads in Rainhill 'put on' the scouse accent to think they are hard. They over do it coz even in the Dingle or Toxteth the accent is not as bad as rainhill lads so proves they make it up as they go along. Rainhill accent is a mixture of Lancashire and woolie back and I agree its awful. My daughter was born in Whiston hospital and got that accent and she also hates it, lol.

Hello
Does anyone remember the last day of steam on Britsh Railways back in August 1968? I was only 15 but I went with my brother, Stephen, and watch 45110 as it pulled out of the station heading towards Manchester for the last time. I recall standing by the 77 steps bridge and walking back down Ritherup Lane as we made our way home. Does this bring back any memories for you?

Hello
I used to play for Rainhill Cricket Club as a junior back in the late 1960s and early 1970s and would love to contact anyone who played there at that time and remembers me. I played in the second team when Jack Williams was captain. Remember him? His father, Percy, used to own the Victoria Inn before they moved to Penketh.

I also played for Rainhill CC in 1964 and 1965 before returning to Australia. Jack used to pick me up on game days in his Austin A40. I played Saturday and Sunday games. Unfortunately I 've lost the information with all of my team mates but I do have a couple of team photos if you'd like a copy.

I am conducting a Pilot Study into the education experience for those with congenital heart disease, through a university here in New South Wales, Australia. (I have a condition known as Ebstein's Anomaly)
I would be most interested from anyone who went to the school. Or anyone who has a congenital heart condition and now lives in Australia.
