  • we used to have the grand cinema until the local housing partnership bought it to try and turn the space into flats. A quick buck could be smelt i think!! For now the residents block the idea and the nicest looking building in town still sits empty.
  • I assume that the Grand has now been refurbished ( although nothing is mentioned on here ) as the 40's Weekend is advertising films at it. The contact phone number 01487710221 doesn't accept incoming calls and the one given out by YP 01487710222 you never get a reply from, your website is infrequently updated. Come on Grand no wonder you don't get custom if you can't get your advertising correct! Customers like us who live miles ( 170 ) away rely on this.
  • The council have boarded up the front of the Grand apparently to make it secure. According to a press report the Council are making the old owners refurbish inside and will reopen in summer, looks as though they have got concerned about St Neots getting the 4.2m for the Priory Centre! The other 3 screen cinema on the new Tesco site is also going ahead and when finished the Grand will become a community Centre.
  • Having just returned to Ramsey after 12 months away I was suprised to find that no further progress had been made on the Grand. It is a complete eyesore and I fail to understand why the council have allowed this to occur. In a conversation with a councilor I understand that permission to repair/replace/build new has not been granted to the development company. The previous owners now become responsible for its refurbishment to its original condition. I hope that the council apply pressure to have this carried out along with updating of the facilities, to give an entertainment centre for Ramsey to be proud of.
  • 1940's Weekend was very enjoyable but whatt happened to the wartime film show of news reels, old films and the wartime history talk about the Grand that was advertised for the weekend? I like others expected it to be in the closed building but was suprised to find an 'eye sore' and no indication as to it's new venue. The Museum Staff said it was in the hanger at Upwood where we were told it was at the museum! As the Grand is a listed building I can't understand why the local authority have allowed it to deteriate to the extent that it has, surely it will soon be beyond repair? 2 years ago the owner said that they were going to refurbish it and had received grants to do so, whats happened? Other messages on here would appear to indicate that it is to be redeveloped without the previous owner's promised refurbished cinema. I am suprised that the local community are allowing this to happen as it was a major asset to them.
  • BLOT on the LANDSCAPE! Error; the plans show the offices of Granta Boats as being the 'Box Office'! As these belonged to P Haddon does the price included these or is this in addition to the £4.2m? The Box Office is just INSIDE the MAIN CINEMA!The local press state that Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire councils are in favour of the new development as on the plans but Ramsey council object to it! Ramsey Council will be over ruled so whats the point of them being consulted? I understand that the £4.2m included all the costs associated with the aquisition Legal fees; Surveys; Plans Consultations; Market research; Employees and Directors Redundancy; Purchase of the company Excaliber Entertainments and Films Ltd.Why if they don't intended to have a cinema/venue? The Purhase of the Land and Property the area of which varies from plan to plan!
  • Neither I Peter Haddon,my sister Pat (trish) Hinkle or any members of our families gave any undertaking to pay for a new cinema, we did say that if one was included in the development, which we understood was possible, we would be please to consider operating it. £4.2m!!! we wish! Peter Haddon
  • The council have now published further plans for the Grand ( for full details/drawings/pictures see Huntingdonshire District Council website under planning) Now NO cinema (apparently Peter Hadden has withdrawn the finance which he promised when it was sold £4.2m)or Community Hall but a Library (this will give us two!) and flats. It is a 'BLOT on the LANDSCAPE!' that has been designed(!?)to replace the Grand. It is in a conservation area, nothing is in keeping with its surroundings or reflects the architecture of the town or the old Grand front. They hope to start building in the autumn and finish 2009! When the Grand was built records show it was started June 1935, finished and opened in Dec 1935 build and equip time being 23 weeks and all by hand!
  • Well, well! According to a local councilor they are not going to allow the Grand to be knocked down, instead they are going to give cash and lottery funding to repair it. At the same time he said they had started to build the new 3 screen cinema next to the new Tesco, which is shown on the net as opening in Sept this year. Poor StNeots of no cinema and Ramsey will have two!
  • The End..From the survey carried concerning demand for a cinema and dance facilities of the number questioned only 18 wanted these to be available, all the others (no number quoted!)thought they were detrimental to the town and encouraged mis behaviour problems. It was recommended that the grand be knocked down and the car park, which would not now be required, have affordable housing built (85 units). [info from recent meeting]
  • Now the council arn't going to allow houses on the Grand or the new 3 screen cinema, PLEASE Pete reopen it! I and others would pay more for our tickets just to get it back.
  • in the local paper it says that The Grand has been bought by a Hollywood Cinema setup and going to reopen with 3 screens early in the new year and they are going to build houses on the old build next door, the toilets and car park thats not wanted any more! Everybody using horses?
  • I see from the local press that the Grand has closed and 70 houses/flats are to replace it
  • The cinema in Ramsey has an enooormus sound system (it can even be heard outside so if you dont want to see the film you can listen for free!)and all the big films stereo sound really comes aahlive. The films always arrive late weeks and weeks after every where else.
  • The advantage of going to the Grand to see a film is that it has sofa's instead of uncomfy cinema chairs and also if u ask nicely the staff will order you take out!!!!also if you go on a sunday morning.....THEY ARE NAKED!!!!!!
  • No comment about the naturists at The Grand!!!!! :-)
  • The Grand! Is very chilled out! But is pretty grotty!!
  • Although the grand is a crap venue it is an excellent cinema. It only has one screen and it can be a bit slow getting some of the films but you can drink and smoke or get a takeaway to eat while you watch the film. How classy is that?
  • The Grand is the most amazing Cine-Pub I've ever been too. If only people would stop bloody talking during the films it would help. So much better than those awful souless multiplexes. The Geezer that runs the Grand also runs the Cromwell in Huntingdon. The Grand is not a bad dance band venue either.
