| Hartley family tree.
|
by Paul Hartley (Member 10226532) on 27-May-2008

It’s probably a long shot but are there still any Hartley’s in the Kilnhurst / Swinton areas.
On tracing back our name I found they originated from one person moving from Kilnhurst to Manchester in the 1890’s. From that one brother that moved to Manchester just off the A57, there are now around 100 Hartley’s living around Manchester, 5 in Cleveleys and 2 in California USA.

Paul,
There are lots of Hartleys still in Swinton and the surrounding areas including me. I was born and live in Barnsley, but stem from the Swinton 'clan'. My great-great-grandfather (John Thomas Hartley was born in Kilnhurst in 1857 and lived in Swinton until 1904 when he died. He had lots of siblings (George, Edmund, Mary Ann, James, and Edwin) so your ancestor could be one of those, however, there were lots of other Hartley families in the area in addition to mine. For your info John Thomas' dad, Thomas Hartley, lived in Swinton for a while, but originally came from Woodkirk in East Ardsley near Wakefield as did most of his ancestors. They were all coal miners (surprise surprise!) and came looking for work. I don't know if this links into your search, but hope it helps. Please feel free to drop me an email if I can help any more.
Regards

I am trying to trace any members of the above family who lived in Haugh Rd. Rawmarsh in the 1950's onward.
There were two sons Leonard & Colin, both sadly deceased but also 3 daughters.
The father Leonard was a haulage contractor and his lorries "Leonard Green Haulage" were well known in the area.
Thank you, Colin

Thanks Gloria, I did manage to make contact but wasn't really able to give out a lot of the information I wanted to. I offered my contact info
she wouldn't write it down, she declined that it would be to expensive to make the call or be in contact. I understand as she is a pensioner and would have incurred the expense to reply. Thank you for your help. I made a donation to a local kids charity here in Canada and to the world wild life fund.. I think my mum would have approved. It would have been nice, as I have never known my relatives over there in Rawmarsh.
Sincerely,
