- I can recommend Paul's Hairdressing (unisex) above the greengrocer's on The Hundred (the main street).
- Rally Karting and Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting for children and adults only 15 minutes from Romsey at West Dean. For individuals, famillies, birthday parties, stag and hen parties, corporate parties and team-building. Other activities include Mini digger challenge, blindfold 4 x 4 driving and archery.
E Mail TnTrwbrdg@aol.com or www.avago.co.uk. Great Fun for All Ages. Must book.
- There is not much to do at all in Romsey, but it's a cute little town and theres a few good pubs and resteraunts.
- Why the bad press for Mountbatten School?
It was certainly the hottest as far as I can remember - three fires at least.
The uniform was much better, a civilised blue blazer.
But anyway they are now working with Romsey school, as a language college, so all enmity should now be forgotten.
- I've been living in Romsey for 13 years and for a small town it's good, I went to The Romsey Community School where we had to wear the most awful maroon blazers and tights whilst the boys wore black; it was such a bad uniform!! It's left me scarred!!! But our school was so much better than than dump: Mountbatten!!! -Scummer school!!!!
- The place was the home of Lord Mountbatten, his house being Broadlands, which happens to be the place that Charles and Di spent the first week of their honeymoon (sic).
It has 2 comprehensive schools - Romsey School (the best - I went there, ex Secondary Modern) and Mountbatten School (ex Grammar). There's a couple of public schools near by too. Romsey Abbey is pretty lovely (they once discovered an old Rose in the foundations of it, which dates back to quite a long time ago - it was on the news, probably around the late 70s) Its also got King John's Hunting Lodge - if you're into historical crap. Nice ducks in the park, New Forrest not far off, an idyllic little market town not far north from Southampton, SW of Winchester, SE of Salisbury. The best thing is the number of pubs. The worst thing is my old French teacher - Mrs. Collier - she's obsessed with the town, the Romsonian Association, etc, (puke puke) and an old patronising bitch. (she's probably dead by now though, she says hopefully....!!!! ;) Oh you know I don't really mean it - painfully rotting away will do! - I used to live there... The fishing was cool! (Until the bloody coppers nicked me)
- Correction! The worst thing was (is?) not your French teacher, it was (is?) my German teacher. (Same school) Mr. Bachmann. Totally terrifying.
- I grew up in Romsey and left in about 1975. I still have family in the area. One of my best mates was Nigel Bachmann, the son of your beloved German teacher (I didn't like him much either). Romsey has changed a great deal in the last 20 years and now seems to be run by people who have moved in from outside and want to preserve everything in sight. When I was a teenager there was nowhere to go apart from the pub and we used to spend long hours in The Old House at Home and The Three Tuns. I don't think that aspect has changed much.
- Romsey has a great hunting tradition, or it did until those bloody hunt saboteurs stopped it. There used to be a traditional meet by the Hursley Hambledon Hunt on Boxing day, where most of the town turned out to see the hounds and the riders. It was a great sight. It was sadly stopped a couple of years ago, because of violence by the sabs. It is greatly missed not only by the people who go hunting but also by those who don't hunt.
- I'd like to add that the worst thing used to be the bloody Hunt meet poluting the town center on Boxing Day, and terrifying us veggies by trampling around the area as we were happliy tucking into another slice of Quiche! I'M GLAD IT'S OVER! (I'd also agree that Herr Bachmann was a bigger bastard than Mme Collier, but at least he was a consistent bastard!)
- I am a resident of Northern California who spent a week in Romsey recently. I enjoyed it greatly. We stayed at the Abbey Hotel and got to know a few locals a bit. We could travel by train to nearby sights and not have to change hotels. We have been reccommending it to friends ever since. Guess what, all of you who complain about not enough to do - you could have trouble finding things to do no matter where you are. Enjoy wherever you may be, but also enjoy going to other places to learn about them. We particularly enjoyed the Abbey and Broadlands, but also enjoyed walking around the town.
