• There's a strip of B&Bs as you head out north from Rothesay, nione of them very cheap but mostly OK.
• There are no Backpackers' or Youth Hostels on The Isle of Bute. The best value is The Riversdale Private Hotel, on the seafront 5 minutes walk north of Rothesay Ferry Pier. Its Run by a guy from East Africa who is very helpful, friendly and laid-back Their phone is 01700 503240. Or you could see if there's a room free at The Russian Tavern at Port Bannatyne. They have only 4 Guestrooms and the standard charge includes a high quality buffet breakfast from their first rate restaurant, so this ends up being really good value. I had cereals,fresh fruit salad,yogurt, foot-long Russian sausage,saute potatoes, pineapple fritters, boiled egg, freshly baked rolls,croissants and pain au chocolate. There was a variety of fine cheeses and smoked hams and herring, but it beat me. Best coffee on Bute too... from Cuba apparently. Place run by Russians who are truly serious about good food and grog..they were awarded Scottish Pub of the Year by The Campaign for Real Ales which is achieved by all the members voting for the best pub with the best beer. Their number is 01700 505073 and they're right on the waterfront at Port Bannatyne Marina. Dinner there is for the wealthy but lunch is substantial and under a tenner for a fine feed, say of langoustines or Mussels cooked in cream. Lots of Blinis and caviar and latkes for the adventurous.
