The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call
You can tell us more about Rye.
Pubs
- Incidentally, any Yank or otherwise who calls the Ypres Tower or Pub "the wipers" is spot on,thats the correct local(mis)pronunciation,"eeps" is how its pronounced by pretentious d...heads.Theres an r in there, you know,so if you want to pronounce it in french its eeprah(throaty r).Dont make me tell you again.
- Rye has often been described as "four thousand alcoholics clinging to a rock"and imo never a truer word spoken.Hard core topers are everywhere, but are particularly apparent in the bedford arms, pipemakers arms and basically everywhere else as well.Lots of pretentious deluded snobs seeking Mapp and Lucia type B.S in the posh citadel area, and some very chavvy chavs on the estates, which is where the true locals live.Fun though if you can hack the snobs. In general,a liberal, intoxicated town.
- Standard
Ypres
Pipes (if you have too; very cheap beer though)
- The Queens - Landgate
- queens...or the crown
- Only one serves the underage thats the queens adalaide and its a dive I havent drunk there since I was 14 so 6 years ago its now 2005 u do the math.
- Queen Ad is a Dive.
Standard is Wonderful.
Ypres is Mediocre.
- the mermaid inn - shit - just try taking foreign nationals there for the fun of having them told to f---- off if they don't like what is on offer
- put it this way, dont walk past the crown on your own when there is a football mtch on unless you have a suicide wish! most are pretty decent though, the bell and the ship serve good pub food. the ypres has a friendly local atmosphere. DONT EAT AT THE GEORGE well you can of course but i wouldnt recommend it!!
- Top 'o' the Hill, a pub + B&B = never come here! It is reminisant of the Bates Motel but a shitty remake version - unfit for human viewing. No thanks.
- the crown n the queens n many many more but these r the 'hooligan pubs'
- Theres a heck of a lot of pubs, i think we counted 16 pubs and 40 something places to buy a pint. Thats quite good considering the size of Rye!
- The Ypres (pronounces "yeeps") Castle, behind Ypres Tower (incidentally, Americans come and call it the "Wipers" Tower) and the Gun Gardens is a pretty quiet place with a nice beer garden looking over the Salts and the Rother.
- The Mermaid Hotel has a big crackling fireplace and some real old furniture to torture yourself on while sipping that ale from a pewter mug.
