Corner eateries, quick bites and the local chippy
You can tell us more about Selly Oak.
Cheap Food
- You can't beat the Selly Sausage or Woodstock, Woodstock's a bit more but it's totally worth it! As for Selly Sausage, I recommend the vegetarian all day breakfast (as a veggie - I hear the meaty version is also spectacular)...mmmm....
- It's been said before, but my goodness the selly sausage is a damn good fry up. Nothing quite so consoling after the world has dropped out of your bottom than sausages, bacon, mushrooms etc and a whacking great chunk of black pudding.
- The Khanum on the Bristol Road is pretty cheap (although prices have risen as word of mouth has spread) and does SUPERB food. And it has an off-license next door. Done deal.
- It can only be Big Johns for chips.
The Sundarbon has recently been done up and its truly excellent. On my 20th birthday they gave me 3 free triple vodka and cokes.
- The guild at Birmingham uni (if your a student).A massive fry up for 2 quid!!!!!!!!!
- Obviously there is the indespensible Selly Sausage, buit other places for a quick bite to eat are Kebab land- that does well chips, and Adam's place. There are also copious amouns of balti houses. The Chamon is my personal favurite, but that is only as I have been there so often I am known by name. They also give 10% student discount
- kebab land
shapla is best curry house by miles - have a chicken cylon
- An excellent selection of balti houses. You can't really go wrong except for the Chamon. The food is a bit bland there and I know of some people who came down with food poisoning after eating there...
Kaya's Turkish takeaway is excellent but last time I was in Selly I saw a for sale sign! Don't go!!!!!
- Must mention the Balti Houses of Selly. Best ones are the Shapla (used to live above it!). A slightly more expensive (£1 more - whoah!!) but best quality Balti House is the Dilshad. Both places are really nice and friendly. Don't ask for starters and you may get them on the house anyway! By the way - those students expecting to have a late night curry after clubbing will be rather miffed to know the local councillors have stopped the Balti Houses serving 'in house' after 1am during the week due to the effect on local residents.
Mud Cafe IS fantastic - when its open. It does have a very ad hoc opening hour regime. Cafe Face is o.k. too for snacks. And Phoenix Cafe (they nearly spelt the name wrong when they put up the sign - we were in the OVT opposite drinking and had to advise them.
- Big John's fish 'n' chip shop, the Asian kebab shop opposite the Farce & Firkin, the list goes on!
- Pranees. Delicious Thai food served by really friendly Thai ladies. If they like you they'll call you darling :o)
- Mmmm, the Selly Sausage....
- Big Johns (bristol rd opposite sainsbury's) excellent fish and chpis for 99p as well as usual fare ( donar kebabs etc.)
Tons of balti houses open late
Pizza place nr sainsbury's
Mexican and thai opposite sainsbury's
Selly sausage sells sausages
