Pubs in Selly Oak, West Midlands*

The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call

You can tell us more about Selly Oak.

Pubs
  • Bristol Pear, the soak, Univarsity, the Goose at the OVT, the Gunbarrels (Gunnies) - all on the Bristol Road. And Joe's at the Guild (though that's technically in Edgbaston). The Goose is the best for pub atmosphere and has a small beer garden. The Gunnies is the place to go to celebrate the end of your exams, although everyone else will be there too. soak is pricey, as is the Bristol Pear. I've never been in Univarsity - hear it's good. Joe's is my personal favourite, then the goose.
  • The soak is pretty souless really, but nowts wrong with it, OVT cheap but has a chronic lack of seating, gunnies dark but a good atmosphere, the pear great if you live too far away to be arsed to walk to the others.
  • the bear and staff, good for a laugh but go in a group if ur a student and if the locals take the piss take it back with in reason but remember they've usually been drinking since it opened and be prepared to duck occasionally. they r great once they get to know u though!
  • THE BRISTOL PEAR.
  • THE BRISTOL PEAR IS NOT DODGEY! I've been going there every friday for two years, and it has lost its rough image now. Hats off to the staff! Very cheap too, a great atmosphere! Oh and some tastey bar staff too ;-). Matt Clarke
  • A new pub has opened next to the OVT - called the soak. Has pool table, tv screen and playstations. Bit on the pricey side for a student pub and a bit flash in decor. However, makes a change from the bass pubs (scream and ovt) and stella is nice. Still, think a weatherspoons pub would've been better.
  • The OVT (The Goose) has the cheapest beer prices, even including the guild. The Gun Barrels, and the Bristol Pear, (Both "It's A Scream" pubs) come a close second. For food, you cannot beat the country girl on Raddlebarn Road.
  • The Bristol Pear, known for its extreme dodgyness. Also, the place is full of impersonators - they all look exactly like the 15-17 yr olds i see every day at VI form. Strange that.
  • OVT has recently made a comeback after its disasterous change into a Firkin (and subsequent loss of business to the BP and Gunbarrels). A bit of a price-war has broken out on the Bristol Road with the OVT now leading (in its reincarnation as a "Goose"). Tales of beer for £1.35 a pint have been known...
  • OVT now lost its firkin crappiness and has had yet another face-lift - now a Goose Pub which means no music, extremely cheap beer at times, and nice enough decor. Popular with students and locals alike (due to cheap beer but relatively non-studenty 'mature' ethos of these pubs. Suggest a re-visit!
  • The Bristol Pear, The Gun Barrels, The Country Girl, The Farce & Firkin etc.
  • Bear and Staff is probably the best pub to go to if you want to meet a real 'locals' crowd and not just a place full of Birmingham University clones.Give it a try ... all ages welcomed.
  • Gunbarrels - very yellow Bristol Pear - ditto, a rough minority of w*nkers OVT - nice since they did it up, take yer gran for lunch - but for how long? The Brook - Scruffy and unwelcoming for students, nice beer garden though.
  • "The Camp" in Kings Norton. Silly name. Nice pub.
  • O.V.T ( probably on last legs due to heavy competition from it's a scream pubs recently resorting to dodgy d.j to pull in the punters) Bristol Pear ( very full allow at least half an hour to get to bar) Gun barrels (nasty yellow frontage cannot miss it) very nice inside but mainly student populated) The Brook not yellow but nice
