I lived in Richmond Avenue as a child. Two of my great aunts taught at Richmond Avenue School and earlier at Hinguar Street. They were referred to as "big Miss Brooks" and "little Miss Brooks" and when I have visited Shoebury there always seems to be someone who remembers them as such.I love Shoebury,I have traced my family back to 1800 residing there.I have a lot of schoolday picture postcards and photo's. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers us or who is interested in Shoebury schooldays of the past. ... more >>

I'm interested in the Southend Borough Council children's home(s) that went by the name Seaview Homes in Ulster Avenue Shoeberryness. Anyone there in the 1950s early 60s? I'm trying to find someone I lost touch with in the 1950s. Any help appreciated

I attended richmond for only a couple of years-1965 and 66 but would be interested in finding out about one of my teachers, a Mrs Evans, who was an excellent teacher-even gave me a school prize.
I think she left in the 70's but I have no further details.

Looking for information on the Cain Family. They lived at Smith St. Shoeburyness in the 50s and early 60s. James Patrick Cain and Dorothy Rose Cain were my great grand parents. Two sons Terence James Cain, my grandfather and Kenneth J Cain.
I am lead to believe that James Patrick Cain my Gt grandfather was an orphan so I’m finding it difficult to trace the family tree on this side of my family. I would be very grateful for any information.

Hi, I am having trouble remembering where I lived and which primary school I went to in Shoeburyness!!
My father was stationed in Shoeburyness and me and my twin sister Jennifer went to a local primary school and lived in a semi detached house (obviously paid by Army)in Shoeburyness. I can remember also being a cub. We both took our 11+ and passed and I got a place at Southend Boys Grammar School. However Dad got posted to Germany and we subsequently went to Boarding Schools in the Midlands. Both our parents have passed away now and so we cannot ask them for advice. I know its a long shot but can anyone remember me or Jennifer? We are now 63. ... more >>

You were in my class at Richmond Avenue Primary School and in Class 6 Miss Davey was our teacher. In the same class off the top of my head was Christine Simmonds, who sat in front of me, and sitting next to me was Sandra Warne. Behind me was Dudley Brake and Stephen Johns, othe boys in the class were Malcolm McLeod, Ian Hoskins and Francis Cochrane, who fell off his seat one day and bit through his tongue. Ann Hadley and Ann White were also in the class. Mr Poutney was the head master, he was tall and thin. My name was Christine Handy. Every so often, being as old as I am, I think of my childhood and yor and Jennifer have often passed through my mind. Migrated to Australia 43 years ago, having been married only six weeks. Have two children and six grandchildren. My husband passed away some 15 years ago, just after we had returned to Aus having returned to UK for five years. You lived in the garrison as far as I can remember - do you remember richard patterson who also lived in the garrison (had a sister Paddy (Patricia), not far from the old unused railway line, graham stalley and george timms - they all sat at the back of the class, also John Hutchins. Do you remember Mr Read, who died after a heart attack at the end of the pier whilst waiting for some French children to arrive, colin keeling and donald goldsmith, janice saxony and susan hollington. Was home in Shoebury from 88 to 93 -when it was time to return to Aus. Hope to hear from you and/or Jennifer. Chris (Handy) ... more >>

Hello Chris, I am Allan's twin sister (maiden name Thraves) and was really delighted to read your reply to his message in November 2009. Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to Allan and I'm really sorry it has taken 2 years to post back to you. Life has been hectic but I have now retired & am slowly getting round to the things I've been meaning to do ... It's wonderful to think that you remembered us from so long ago as we lived in Shoeburyness for less than a year, starting at the school there in November 1955 - after living in Egypt - & leaving Shoeburyness in summer 1956. I don't recognise many of the names you mention but do remember yours! I also remember being friendly with a girl called Wendy (but don't know her surname), Steve (again no surname springs to mind) and Ian Hoskins. I remember him because he arrived at our house on Valentine's Day with a card for me! I well remember Miss Davey - thought she was quite scary. I do remember Mr. Read (Reid?) and that he died but I thought he had flu or pneumonia and recall that the pier came into it somewhere. At about the time Allan posted his message I went with some friends to Shoeburyness (they were visiting a relative in Southend) & we drove round. I worked out from the layout that the school must have been Richmond Avenue. We didn't live in the Garrison but in a road parallel to Richmond Avenue - I think it may have been Connaught Gardens. When we first arrived we lived for a few weeks in a flat opposite a church - again from driving around I recognised the church (Church Road, Cambridge Town) which looked so much smaller than I remember! I too have lost my husband - he died 4 years ago. I live in Buckinghamshire and have two children and four little grandsons aged between 21 months and 6 years. I'm sorry you live so far away as it would have been good to meet up. I've visited Australia a couple of times - in 1993 and in 2002 - as my husband was half Australian and has quite a few relatives there. Allan migrated to Australia with a girlfriend when he was about 21 (they got married out there) but they came back to England after two or three years. It would be great to hear from you - do hope you still read the posts on the 'knowhere' Shoeburyness site. Thanks again for your great message. All the best, Jennifer. ... more >>

I remember a couple of things..I do remember Doug Hounsell..very strict...Do you remember Mr.Clark..maths teacher,Mr. Coppard ..art teacher,Mr. Ashby..English...left due to big problem with student..(Wont mention her name,)a well known student .I was very fond of Martin Carpenter..about five brothers..like to know what happened to him..His dad was a rag and bone man...(sounds funny after all these years)..We migrated to Australia..(Sydney)I am part of the 'Singer' family, five out of six of us went to Shoeburyness High..Martin,David,Barbara,(Rebecca and Christina-un-identical twins) and Stephen.. was too young for High School.I do remember an incident in the school canteen/school dinners...do you remember Dave Webber..tough guy (I was led to believe)..Remember we had to stand up to say 'Grace' I think..Dave refused to,remembered him saying" I paid to have HOT dinners"..and wouldn't stand up..there must of been a scuffle..because he ended up knocking the teacher out..I think it was Doug Hounsell..but not 100% sure...How cheap were those school dinners.. ...one shilling...!!! remember buying Potato Puffs.4d. or 6d.in the tuckshop. I do remember playing 'shinty'..on the school oval..that sounds funny now...no one I know has ever heard of this sport...like hockey, but with a different shape stick..Dont think we even had a sports uniform...'vest' and 'knickers'..from memory....Way back then...the 'slipper'(shiny soled 'plimpsole') and the 'cane'...didn't do any of us long term damage...we certainly got a few between us...I can remember those beach huts...looked like garages..actually on the beach front...all those pebbles and stones...(think I'm spoilt by the beaches here in Australia)!! ....Will rack my brain a bit more..will let you know if I can remember anything else...Good Luck..Christina Morton (nee Singer). ... more >>

They had a son called Gareth & resident helper was called Eve. We used to have to call them Auntie/Uncle. I can't remember how old i was when we first went in but left around 1975 when i was 10. I was in Woodlands House from 1964 to 1976. I went to Richmond Primary and Shoeburyness High, which was then a comprehensive. The Falconers had just taken over Woodlands and I was the first child in their "care". Lots of kids came and went during my stay and I think I was one of, if not, THE longest resident. The list of names I remember is too long to type here but some of the better memories I have are, The convoy of Taxis to Clacton every year, The Beach hut on Shoebury prom, the bonfire nights, the Christmas parties on the american bases and at Fords. The boating lake by the Shore House pub.
For those that don't recognise the name, my name at the time was Costi AKA "Little Andrew". At one point my surname was Falconer but that's a different story. ... more >>

Hi Julie, My Nan was the House Mother of St Christopher's and you're right her name was Vera, and she was married to Peter Woodyard. She and Uncle Peter did not have any children, but She did with her first Husband, my Grandad. Her and Peter had a Jack Russell Dog, by the name of Tina :-) I am sure you'll remember Tina girls as she was affectionately known.
My Mum's name is Joan, I am more remembered as Jonathan and my Sister is Joanne, do you recall us visiting Nan? Joanne and I spent a vast amount of our childhood at St Christopher's.
You remember Auntie Eve? How about Auntie Rosa and Auntie Georgie? Do you remember the outings to the Beach, by Uncle Toms? Playing Rounders on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon in the grounds and trips to Epping Forest? I can even remember Auntie Sylvie's wedding to Colin, and there's a photo of her and all the kids, including me and Joanne and I believe You and Karen :-).
Sadly Nan passed away 17 days ago, her funeral is in 2 days time. Uncle Peter died a good few years ago too..
It would be nice to hear from anyone at St Christopher's in the 70's, Nan loved her time at Seaview Homes and would have loved to known how all 'The Children' were getting on. ... more >>

I have a lot of mixed emotions about my childhood but do remember Vera and Peter warmly.
I would love to see the photo you mentioned.
Do you know who Gareth was? I really thought he was their son. Not that it matters.
If you are able to scan the photo that would be really good. I dont have many photos of me as a child.

| caravan site in shoeburyness in 60s/70s

This is a long shot I know but I used to go on holiday with my grandparents in the 60s and up till 1973. They had a caravan (I'm quite sure it was a static one) at a caravan site in shoeburyness. I cant remember the name of the site, but it had a long high wall that went down the side of the site, which led down to the beach. There was a parade of shops fairly nearby.
It was closed and houses were built on the site of it around the mid 70s.
Does anyone know the name of the site im talking about. I think I will know if its the right one, if anyone can suggest what it might be.
Both grandparents have passed away now so I cant ask them or my parents either.
Maybe then once I have the name of the site, I will be able to find something on line that I can look up. Thanks ... more >>

As well as the caravan park at East Beach I think the caravan park you may well be thinking of used behind the Shore House. It was situated on the land between The Shore House pub and St Andrews church in Church Road. I moved to Shoebury in 1964 and back then the caravan park occupied a large plot of land and was mainly full of static caravans, I think they were used as holiday homes. Back then the Shore House was a little smaller than it is now and it had a Shell petrol station in front of it (where the tables and chairs out front are now).
The whole area is now a housing estate of detached houses and a couple of blocks of flats. Built sometime in the '70s I think.

wow thats brilliant, thank you so much to you all for your information. I hopefully will get there sometime and have a look round the area. I spent a lot of happy years there with my grandad and mum. I spent my last holiday with my mum there before she passed away in May 1973 and a year or so after that, my grandad re-sited the caravan to burnham on crouch as the memories were too much for him and of course because the site was closing down to make way for housing.
I vaguely remember going past the area a year or so after it was closed, with my dad, and I looked at the houses being built there. It looked so different. ... more >>

The caravan site near Shoebury Common which is now a housing estate was owned by Capt H R Townsend. My parents started camping there before WW2 and continued to do so afterward. At first it was under canvas but in the late 50s they bought a caravan. I spent many weekends there from 1948 until 1965.
