| SpeedDater - still no disabled access
|
by Julian Henley (Member 10119351) on 25-Jul-2004
|
A number of months ago I posted a message regarding the UK's leading speed dating agency - SpeedDater Ltd (www.speddater.co.uk). The agency ran regular events in Brighton but there was no wheelchair-access to the venue. I am disabled and was therefore unable to attend.
Since this disappointing experience, I have been in contact with SpeedDater. After some persuasion, Brooke Ellingworth (Events Manager, SpeedDater) promised to use a venue in the Brighton area which was accessible to disabled customers.
However, it appears that the disabled people in and around Brighton are being forced to wait. Seemingly, there are no venues under consideration. Indeed, there is little sign of a search for a venue by SpeedDater. In an attempt to find a suitable venue, I wrote to a number of establishments myself. Some of these expressed interest in having their premises used for SpeedDater events. SpeedDater, alas, were less enthusiastic.
I recently attended a presentation about the new amendments to the Disability Discrimination Act due to come into force in October 2004. The presenter spoke of "ostrich organisations" burying their heads in the sand and disassociating themselves with the Act. Could SpeedDater be positioning themselves in this category? I hope not. But, something is causing a lengthy delay. Could Brighton really be so backward in its provision for the disabled that it cannot yield a single wheelchair-access venue suitable for speed dating events? As I type this, I am aware that I am using technology capable of putting me in touch with every corner of the planet. How hard can it be?
This is a lonely campaign indeed. Please support me by contacting SpeedDater with details of any suitable venues. Contact:

| Speed Dating in Haywards Heath
|
by Julian Henley (Member 10119351) on 30-Jun-2004
|
Speed Dater Ltd (UK's largest speed dating agency) report they are interested in using a venue in Haywards Heath, but they are concerned that there might not be enough demand for it in Haywards Heath.
I am disabled and therefore have not been able to attend speed dating events held at Brighton because Speed Dater's Brighton venue is not accessible to wheelchairs. However, I did manage to attend an event in London which was excellent! Speed Dater really know how to organise a great event, it's a great way to meet loads of people in one evening so I would urge anyone to give it a go.
Anyway, I recently set about trying to find a wheelchair-accessible venue in the Brighton area for Speed Dater to use, I wrote to dozens of night clubs, restaurants, pubs, hotels, wine bars, etc. I can assure you this is quite hard work for someone with cerebral palsy - even the act of folding a letter and getting it into an envelope can be a tough job sometimes. I therefore felt rather pleased with my efforts when I received an email from Speed Dater's Events Manager, Brooke Ellingworth, telling me that a possible venue had come up in Haywards Heath. However, Brooke also said that the venue may have to be dropped because he was concerned there might not be enough demand to make for a successful event.
I would hate all my hard work to be for nothing. More importantly, I would really like to attend speed dating events near my home town (Burgess Hill).
I would like to ask a big favour of you, the reader of this message board. If you have any interest in speed dating in Haywards Heath or know anyone who might, please contact Brooke Ellingworth (details below) and express your interest. I would sincerely appreciate your support, it could make all the difference for me and other disabled people in this area who find it difficult to meet people.
I very much hope you can help.
Many thanks for your help. Speed Dater can be contacted at:

I am wheelchair-bound. Recently, I booked a place on a speed dating event organised by Speed Dater Ltd - www.speeddater.co.uk (Britain's leading speed dating agency based in London). The event was to be held in the downstairs bar of Al Duomo (an Italian restaurant in Brighton). However, the bar is inaccessible to wheelchairs. A quick look at Speed Dater Ltd's website indicates that (at the time of posting this message) all forthcoming Brighton events are to be held in Al Duomo's downstairs bar, effectively barring disabled people. Surely an organisation of this size has the resources to find venues that are accessible to the disabled. It's hard enough for many disabled people to meet people and form relationships without this sort of unnecessary barrier being put up. I urge all disabled people interested in the exciting activity of speed dating (or anyone concerned about rights for the disabled) to get in touch with Speed Dater and enquire about their policy on disability. Perhaps together we can pursuade them to provide some wheelchair-friendly events in our area.
Speed Dater Ltd can be contacted on Tel. 0870 300 3535.

| Shoreham Grammar School 1964 - 68

Went to SGS as a Border straight from India, what a culture shock. Hated the place most of the time but it did slowly get better. I remember the Hollies landing at Shoreham Airport, the hanging man in Windy Nook? discoverd by SGS boys being where they shouldn't. It would be good to get in touch with anyone who went to SGS during those years.
PS. Found out that Peter Cushing was an old SGS Boy.

The hanging man at Windy Nook? I remember the abandoned old house at the junction of Mill Lane and Southdown Road in the early 60's. It was well overgrown in 65-66 and we always thought it was haunted..... what is the story of the hanging man?

by Steve Walker (Member 10089377) on 12-Apr-2003
During the summer of 64, some boys from SGS decided to explore Windy Nook and found a body hanging from the rafters in an upstairs bedroom.

This is Chris Bird. I was at SGS 1961 to 1963 (Grenville House)as a "colonial" boarder (from Uganda, East Africa). E.A Bruder was headmaster then. Mr J. E Bebbington was the P.E. teacher, among other things. I remember him delivering a "public flogging" to some poor souls in front of the whole school in '63 I think. Also I was in the cadet corps and we had a rifle range across the road by the chapel. Taking out 2.2's for ostensible target practice, one challenge was to try and shoot the pigeons nesting in the nooks and crannies of the tower on St. Mary O'Hara church(I think that's what it was/is called). One chap actually put a hole through the large brass ball that sat on a pole atop the church tower.
Another not so memorable occasion was when I had a "fight" with teacher H.N. Kent in the U4A french class(rolling around the floor grappling each other, quite disgusting really). Does any one remember any of this? Dereck Towers, schoolyard chum, you were there , and others too. If you are out there contact me please. I now live in Sydney Australia. ... more >>

This is Chris Bird again. Does anybody know what happened to Shoreham Grammar School? Did it move to Worthing, and if so what is it called now? Also does the Old Shorehamers' Association (SGS old boys' club) still exist? I can't find anything on the web.

Shoreham Grammar is now called Shoreham College and is still in the same place. I was at the school from 73 to 77.

I was at school from 1962 to 1968. The school is now called Shoreham College and is flourishing. It also has an active Old Boys Society, or should I say Old Pupils, because the school now takes girls. I am on the Old Boys committee, so if you have any specific questions, email me on davidabbott2002@aol.com, and I will try and get you answers.

My name is JIM HOPPER. I was at SGS from 1951 - 59also in Grenville. The school actually moved from the centre of Shoreham to the edge of the town near the harbour entrance at Southwick and re-named itself Shoreham College. It became quite up-market I believe. Bruder was also my HM. Jim Bebbington taught economics and was the Sports master. Jim was a friend of my elder brother and he was a good friend of our family after I left. Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago aged in his fifties. A strange school - not great academically I don't think but had some good points. ... more >>

I left Shorham in 1964 (I think) so far back I can hardly remember. I was in Raleigh and I still have my school tie! The school in Pond Lane Shoreham closed its doors soon after that and moved to Clifton Road in Worthing for a year or two. Rumour has it that The Rev Kennedy put up all or most of the money to buy the premises in Worthing to keep the school going, before it merged with Keys School in Kingston Lane, Shorham, now known as Shorham College, still running. Yes I was at SGS in the early 50's, and I can remember Mr Bruder the Headmaster, its imprinted on my mind I believe he flogged a boy called Bullock or a name like that with 12 strokes of a solid looking cane. The event had a lasting impression on me of fear. All the classroom partitions were pushed back, and he was canned in front of the school. I remember in winter throwing buckets of water down on the playground out the Chemistry Lab to make a slide of ice for the next morning. Chris ... more >>

Hi My name is Pete Chapman, and I have the dubious honour of taking some friends to a dance at the school when I was a pupil from 62-67. As we left one of them managed to throw a stone right through Kent's window in the Teachers Annexe. I caught merry hell from him when I returned the following term. Have any of you ex-pupils read David Muirheads book ? nails the place quite well.

| Singles Party - 12 December, Hogshead, Burgess Hil

by Julian (Member 10019917) on 11-Dec-2001

I am the founder of the Burgess Hill Young Singles Club. This is a new club for single people living within 20 miles of Burgess Hill. There are other singles clubs in the area but they are all aimed at older people and, to my knowledge, ours is the only club aimed at people under 30. Membership is free and I am eager to attract new members.
On Wednesday 12 December 2001 I will be hosting a Singles Party at The Hogshead pub (Church Road, Burgess Hill) for current members and anyone interested in joining. Anyone aged 18-30 who is unattached is very welcome to join the fun. There is no fee but guests will naturally have to buy their own drinks.
The fun starts at 8.00pm.
Guests are asked to "check-in" with me on irrival. I will be highly recognisable, at the bar in my electric wheelchair. However, if anyone is not sure who I am they may ask Adrian (the Manager of Hogshead) or another member of staff.
If this event is successful, further events will be held on a regular basis.
