Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars in Southampton, Hampshire*
Where to go to get down
You can tell us more about Southampton.
Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
- OCEANA- biggest and best one in the country!
- The Rhino on a Wednesday
- The Hobbit in Bevois Valley... cocktails named after characters... £4 a pint! Awesome jukebox and the beer garden is unrivalled.
- If u is visiting Soton u gotta go 2 walkabout the music is well varied, u is looking at classic pop/dance 2 modern day dance, even a bit of rock and also motown. If not just go 2 square 4 cheap cocktails and shots it's well worth a blast!!!!
- I like The Dungeon, Nexus, Firehouse, Unit 22 and The Hobbitt as they all cater for the alternative, rock, punk and metalheads amoungst us. Went to Jongleurs at that was good as it had a real range of people.
- okay so Unit 22 i'd say is amazing.. covers most alternative genres.. thursday night is emo/punk/ska, friday night is more heavy metal rock and saturday night (my favourite) is indie rock night.. there's two rooms, a small 1 and a big 1.. djs and in the small room they have dj and live bands.. great atmosphere, great music
Lennons is also wicked, tuesday night is good for the cheesy old stuff.. its fun.. drinks are cheap.. 1.50 for most.. rum and coke only a pound!!! friday night is indie night i believe.. possibly thursday
the edge.. gay bar... its round the corner from lennons, pool table in there.. it's good, they play a lot of cheesey pop/dance but its a laugh
- jongleurs/bar risa, diva/ikon (BLEUGH), Hammy's, goblets, the avondale, orange rooms,
- Ikon/Diva (forget Diva though). Mono (best bar in Southampton with some amazing DJ's at weekends). Forget Jesters. Southampton Uni bar (Stagg's Head) occasionally has some good live music on. Appartment 26 (oh yes!) Oh, there's too many...
- CONCEPT i saw them at a private party couple weeks ago wicked nite badarsebreaks & hard d'n'b and i see there @king alfred northam road 22-10-05 go and see local talent and its best!
- A decent d'n'b/breaks nite in town on 22/10/05 @ king alfreds (yeah, I know!). Wicked local DJs, hard as tunes and great fun! What more do u want?!
- Angel on a Friday night. Covers bands, the mad landlord who insists on singing "Silver Machine" at every oppoutunity, fantastic jukebox, 2 pool tables. Followed by either Lennons - If you need an early nineties cheese boost, Dorchester - for sitting down and getting more drunk, playing more pool and having a dance when the legs can handle it, Dungeon - Fridays at that time seem to follow the "Rock classics" formula which works. quite accomodating with requests, seems to get a bit more arsey about it when the students go home for the summer though.
Fropg & Frigate is great for dancing on the tables, nexus is supposedly the home of the "beautiful people" but nothings ever caught my eye in there. Hobbit is also fantastic for a drink as due to the natue of the place you can be as chilled out or as hectic as you like. Good prices, huge beer garden, some of which is under cover, food, bands, open night, slightly mad staff and half the staff of the Dungeon on any given night. And Goblets, for free jukebox, pub quiz and good grub. Aug 05
- Bambubar is awesome on a saturday night!
- Southampton isn't as bad for nightlife as some here would have you believe...ditto everyone who has already mentioned Nexus on Friday, Lennons on Saturday, Rhino's on Wednesday (all good indie nights, especially Lennons which actually plays new stuff and not just the third most recent song by Razorlight etc). The Dorchester on a Saturday is in a class of its own and Hammy plays ALL my requests, ha haha! Also has the only (albeit very short) Northern Soul spot I have found in Soton: to the person about 40 posts down interested in starting a Blow Up style night here - I'd come! Post again if you're still around, I might be able to help...
- 25 is far too old for Leisure World, and at this age you might have dangerously developed your own sense of style. Steer clear, and go to Soul Cellar instead. Whilst walking through the high street with a friend (this highlights Southampton's small town mentality)two lads on bikes said to each other - 'it's those two from The Soul Cellar'. Southampton, where you can really BE somebody.
- this site is a remarkable achievement as it is a great resource for us all; thanks... this is why out of our respoect for your cause and efforts that we invite you to our party on saturday 13th at the CUBE (Southampton Uni Students Union) BEST CLUB IN SOTON - QUOTE ME!
and on Sat its even better coz we're callin the shots on the line-up:
ADAM F, SCRATCH PERVS, EKSMAN & KARL HINDS! (UK and US hiphop, DnB/Jungle, ragga/bashment, dancehall AND RnB 4 u cheesy ladies ;p )
NON-STUDENTS WELCOME! txt ur names to SEB 07714679206 by friday nite OR get ur studo mates 2 sign u in = ANY STUDENTS, not jus uni ones!!!
- The Dungeon used to be great - about ten years ago. Then the clueless twats who call themselves the management tried to turn it into a pikey house music dive by renaming it Legends - shades of The Office or what? - and failed miserably, au naturellement. Needless to say it's never recovered, but at least they got rid of the knuckleheaded thugs on the doors with their Phil/Grant Mitchell complexes. Dead hard they were - unless the local Hell's Angels were dropping in for their weekly raping and pillaging session plus customisation of the decor - then they'd be found hiding out back wetting their panties and tugging their forelocks. Pathetic. Don't even go there. You'll find the same kind of pub done 100 times better up the road at the Dorchester.
- Doh! Just pay for a train ticket out of Southampton!
- Nexus nightclub just off eaststreet is the best place to go every saturday for a mix of punk, metal, indie and maybe if you ask real nicely the odd hardcore track gets played. They also have bands occassionaly, ranging from Howards alais (southamptons finest ska core) and skindread to name but two!!!
- Dorchester Arms opposite Lennons is deffinately worth a try especially on saturdays. Rhino Club brilliant on weds. There's a few local djs which prob need a mention, if you see them on flyers anywhere then check them out: Luke T (jump up d'n'b, really good upfront tune selections) dj Hammy (supersonic res, plays anything apart from rubbish. excellent nights out) and finally dj 3-flow or freeflow (absolutely amazin'! rarely seems to play out too often but oh my god!, some of the best d'n'b, fat beatz and basslines i ever heard all mixed/scratched/rearanged and all sorts of weird turntable trickery has to be seen to be believed)
- NEXUS is good on friday but better during the week when they get bands and dj's there. Soul Cellar's nice or though pretty townie/trendyish apart from when a night called INFLUENZA's on which is on the first Thursday of every month.
- jesters ona monday night huge queue and a bit of a dive but worth it alone for the 50p pints!!!!!!!!!!!!11
- Rhino owned by craig davids dad?? i know its owned by several people, two of which i know, but thats a new one to me! check out the soul cellar for all soul/funk and alternative dance. its wicked and so relaxed (west marlands road).
kaos nighclub is also running an alternative underground music night every thursday. two seperate floors, xtra pa, and some wicked acts.
- NY2 - a bit of a dive but cheap drinks most nites except Saturday's. A real diverse age range of people here especially on 80's nite - Thursdays.
IKON/DIVA - Southampton's biggest club located in Leisure World
- Nexus - good even if you're just pretending to still be a student.
- Pfft. Clubbing.
- The Rhino on a Wednesday or a Thursday is always good (Wednesday for more of an Alternative night, Thursday for great tunes and a laugh)
- Yeh Right! In Southampton!! Okay I guess if you want to remember your youth the Kaos or for some decent music then Rhinos!
- The Rhino off London Rd is the only place if you are in the know or are associated with the owner or door staff. Otherwise it's IKON or DIVA at Leisure world if you like loud booming commercial tunes. Brannigans and Chicago rock if you've lost the will to live or like old blokes with cardigans.
- What happened to top rank!! my daughter and her friends will never experience one of the best 'cattle markets' ever!
- Joiners is probably the best but Jumpin Jaks in Leisure world is gud aswell as Ikon and Diva.
- the box
- wensday nights r the night cheap drink at the dungon, then to the rhino, good old dj hammy playin proper music an ocasionly there live bands down stairs.
- The Dungeon in Bevois Valley is ok, bit cyber-goth.
Nexus good all rounder
Lennons for cheap drinks
- The Rhino club is the best in town. Its good on a Wendesday for alternative night and good on the traditional friday night.
- The Rhino club is the best in town. Its good on a Wendesday for alternative night and good on the traditional friday night.
- ICON AND DIVA ON A SUNDAY NIGHT IS SOOO COOL IM NOT SURE WHAT MUSICS IN ICON BUT DIVA THERE IS SUM BANGING OLDSKOOL HARDCORE TUNES DO NOT GO TO NEW YORKS IT IS SOOOOOOOOOO CRAP LAST TIME I WENT THE DJ WAS A COMPLETE KNOB
- Find it all at the local Odeon complex!
- This has got to be Ikon on a Saturday. It's packed and booming! Good preparation for a big holiday, but if you're into 80s cheese, a bit of Vanilla Ice and the like, go over to Diva! Stay clear of Jonglers - average age is probably around 35-40!
- the dungeon is excelent no matter what your musical taste:wednesday is cheesy pop nite, and all drinks are £1.25,thursday is industrial metal nite, indie is on friday, and saturday is classic rock.see you down there!Oh, and the edge is a lot of fun after one to many vodkas!
- nexus on sataurday for alternitive stuff, go there on a friday to take the piss out of indie kids. alot of skaters turnup on a friday an genrally its a good laugh
- Ikon n Diva, venue 4 da ladies lookin 2 pull a player (Saints player that is!) Try n get away from them, u can't!!
Jacks, always good if ur wasted; have u seen da duo wiv pink hair who can sing, really!!! Abba tribute kinda thing!
Hotshots, full of them!! But thursdays n saturday nites the drinks r real cheap, but only if u can get 2 da bar!! But it's ok. Footballer avoiding applies 2 them all, keep ur head down otherwise they accost lovely ladies!!
- NEXUS. FRIDAY INDIE ARSE SATURDAY PUNK METAL ECT
- My best mate and I love Lennons on Onslow Road. Theo's kabab shop does a lovely burgar for all those who like a bit of food after a heavy drinking session in Lennons. Monday and Wednesday is good as it's 50p a shot for a house double, Wednesday [plays a mixture of stuff, although one wednesday they were playing some rather dodgy drum 'n' bass, ragga and god knows what else. Monday is rock night and Friday is my fav. night, but don't expect to get on the dance floor. A good mix of music and people (e.g. not all students or all locals)I love it.
- DIVA obviously, especially when all the girls are in school uniform !!!
- i see all those punk o kids they all hang in yateses and old fat catsys
- Thursday nights at ikon and diva is now "schools out" and is pretty good. if you dress up in "school uniform" *cough* you get in free, otherwise it's £5. you can also get txt msg's which get you in for £2:50 and paul inside will give you a ticket if you show it to him! Hint: even if you don't have a txt, and as long as their is a queue behind you, just scroll through your phone "not being able to find the msg" and you'll just be given one as they can be bothered to wait! hehe!
- the dinge, playting metal punk. whatever your alternative fancy
- I'd rather have 3 million wasps sting my bollocks and then someone set me on fire than go to 'New York New York' ever again. Academy is great fun on a saturday and the dungeon aint too bad either. Cant seem to find any decent hard house venues though... (I guess the bus to the opera house in bournemouth will have to do for now)
- No where that is actually any good for the more discerning clubber. But there is a good place apparantly open in the 'Ocean Village' complex
- nexus is the only half good alternative club(fri-indie / sat-rock)
- IKON - full of lager boys showing off and fighting, and a tad commercial, but the sound system is excellent and you'll get some class club anthems NEW YORKS - do kind-of a commercial old skool night on Saturdays with the mad DJ Carlos (scratches with his foot) - Liquid, SL2, Prodigy etc. DEBAUCHERY - at "the Beach", Ocean Village - THE Hard House/Trance club. Fridays I think. Excellent. Southampton club scene is improving (as at April 2001) but still nothing to match Bournemouth's Slinky.
- Southampton - a bit musically conservative in terms of clubs & venues. I'd
love to hear people's opinions on this - especially as I'm trying to get
something a little bit different going here. If you've ever been to Blow Up in London or the Jazz Rooms & The Joint in Brighton then you'll know what I mean. Cosmic organ grooves, funky dancefloor jazz beats, groovy soundtracks & wild 60s go-go butt-shakers - absolutely yeah baby! but for real soul boys & girls alike. Who wants this - I need to know!
- Rhino Rhino Rhino! I lived in there most nights of the week. Friday and Saturday were splendid, and Thursdays were OK too...oh yeah, and Mondays. OK prices..beware of bouncers...they may try to imtimidate you. If they tell it is members or students only, they're bullshitting...they just don't like you, and you're not getting in. I was a regular so never ever queued. Ha ha ha.
- The Dungeon (or Dinge) is great, and the people arent half as scary as they look. wednesday is £1.25 night, admittance and drinks all £1.25, and 70s & 80s cheesy disco. who could ask for more?
Rhino is also great on Wednesays, and its never difficult to pull in there.
Jumpin Jaks is the place for all those songs you have to do routines to, ie Steps, plus now you can get drunk beforehand in hotshots for £1 a drink! any drink!
- Rhinos on Wednesdays is really good - its an Indie night but Hammy plays moreorless anything good. Nexus on fridays is alright but its turning into a pick-up bar for suspiciously young not-actually-indie types. Then there's the Dungeon which is a bit scary and Lennons which is where you can get very cheap drinks and listen to appaling cheese. Except on thursdays, when Hammy goes there too. But stick to Rhinos on Wednesday really. There are good dance clubs too, by the way.
- New Yorks(cheesy tues &thurs, and the rest of the time as well!), Academy, Ikon(can be a bit too dancy), Kaos (very cool music if you're an 80's child!!), and then a few crap ones and gay ones which I can't remember
- Ikon and Diva are NOT good on a Thursday, but Friday and Saturday rule. Wednesday night is student night - wear what you like, cheap entry - and it is advisable to get an Ikon card. All you need to do is go to reception and show them your passport/driving licence, and whenever you go back there you can skip the often massive (normally about an hour long term time) queues and annoy all your cardless friends.
- You mention the Rhino, it's worth mentioning that Craig David's dad owns / runs this place. BO! Selectah!
- Rhinos, bedford place on a thursday is 70's nite, funky tunes and Mark the D.J. upstairs is a sweetheart!
Jongleurs, bargate, Saturday nite, cannot be beaten, loadsa cheesy tunes, loadsa smiles, loadsa fun!
- Soap are one of the biggest party organisers in Southampton. They have recently left their two year residency at Charlie Parkers, Eastleigh to tour all round all the South Coast towns. They do nights at various nightclubs and regularly hold boat parties running from Ocean Village. For more information go to http://www.soap.uk.com or the UK mirror http://www.rid.co.uk
- For Your Eyes Only is a strip club on London Road.
- For everyone who appreciate all things Indie, check out RHINOS (on Bedford Place) for DJ Hammy on a Wednesday (he's no longer at The Academy - which is now poo with a capital P!!!
Also, NEXUS on a Friday is pretty cool (Nr. East Street and Debenhams)
- Thursdays is shut now. The Beach at Ocean Village plays a huge variety of dance and classics, with a beach theme. All male staff are in shorts ONLY and females in bikinis, lots of water fights and a lot of fun.
- Now that Thursdays doesn't exist, try seeing DJ Hammy & Matt(used to Thursdays on a Wednesday)at The Academy on a Wednesday. Should also mention the Nexus club, britpop/bigbeat/usual on a Friday, Gothic/Rock on a Saturday.
- Not quite dance music but the Dungeon in Bevois Valley hosts a club night 5 nights a week, Tuesday goth and industrial, Wednesday techno, gabba, industrial, Thursday rock, metal, Friday Indie and Saturday Rock, pop, indie, techno...everything really!
- i have to add southampton is getting much better and there are several more places to go to now. there is leisure world, west quay. it has 2 night clubs , jumpin jacks bar( we dance on the tables and pianos here and are encouraged) a bowling alley, hot shots bar, and 13 screen cinema, oh and dont forget 2 restaurants and a ice cream bar, phew all under one roof!!! more clubs being built at the moment will update you when they are done!!! also there is a gay bar near to the magnum called the box, upstairs is called the edge and is for women only on saturdays. its very friendly and anyone is welcome. go on out there and have fun, oh and dont forget to invite me !!! e-mail redsonija@aol.com xx
- ikon is the new huge club opened down here...good for a night out but full of townies and plays standard house and techno...has a section which plays 70s music, called Diva. which is cheesier but better
- Ikon and Diva, the best clubs for miles around. Pull in huge guest Dj's. On a Saturday night most of the entire population of Southampton seem to go there. They are in a new complex called Leisure World.
- Kaos Night Club on St. Marys Road. Used to be really dodgy, the air heavy with what was being smoked downstairs. It's improved (deteriorated?) since then. Two floors and a beer garden. Mix of dance music downstairs. Cheap - £2 entry but they let me in for £1 once when I didn't have enough cash! Students mostly from the Institute during term time. All sorts frequent Kaos though - sixthformers in holiday time, nurses and a few of those dodgy St. Mary's types.
- The Magnum club is Southampton's traditional gay club but they're picky about who they let in.
- Thursdays, by Bargate. On Wednesday nights this club is generally packed, and plays indie/dance/everything good.
- McClusky's, between Ocean Village and town. Restaurant club which has good selection of nights. Smart dress. Very popular.
- Lennons, Bevois Valley. Small Irish theme bar/club with late license all week. Very good atmosphere term-time, good DJ, pretty reasonable live bands.
- Rhino Club, Bedford Place. Good underground dance music nights, but little-known.
- Chemical Beats at the Joiners pub, St. Mary's Street, on the last Saturday of every month is a free dance party. It is probably the best underground dance night around for free, and is definitely worth visiting for anyone withing driving distance of Southampton. Each month the dance area is surrounded by different, excellent lighting and displays. The music selection is excellent and Bangin'. The event has been going a year now and is very impressive, with a large following so get there early to get in. The idea was spawned by three DJs who take it in turn to play sets. Just go there, if you like dance.
- "Jolly's Club" which has hosted Squeeze dance nights for some time, is now controlled by the people who run Squeeze - Jaybez et al - It is finally a very good dance night in Southampton, something very much needed. Jolly's is located on St. Mary's Street at the back of Debenhams, always good name DJ's & some interesting natives.
- This is stretching it a bit but Diva & Ikon (the names say it all)do host some Dance nights. They are run by Leisure world so expect commercialism with a capital "C".
