Pubs in Southampton, Hampshire*
The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call
You can tell us more about Southampton.
Pubs
- The Hobbitt is a great pub. Large, mixed clientelle, good cocktails and freindly staff.
- standing order, on the hight street past tk maxx.... its good.. also the dorchester.. its just past lennons.. both great atmospheres.. ive heard that the frog and the frigate is good too.. thats in ocean village.. but i wasnt a fan of it myself but it does have live music
- goblets, zeb's pretty dull but cheap as chips, any where in london road is snobby, but each 2 ther own
- Hobbit/Cricketers/Stile
- Terminal, Leonnard's, Clown's (rubbish).
- Are you in between 18 - 35 and looking to enhance your social life?
So'ton Friends meets every Wednesday at Quayside (corner of LeisureWorld) from 8.30pm and organises lots of things to do during the weekends.
Being part of a national organisation: there is always something on.. Our local group has around 30 members and there is always room for more!
Why not join us and drop in?!
- Hobbit, Dorchester, Avondale, Gobletts, Fat Cat, Angel. Also Bar Coda, next to the nexus for cheap pre nexus binge drinking (not that i condone that type of behaviour in the slightest) and the Richmond on Portswood Road opposite Safeways for a great place to meet mates in Portswood and having a chat and letting the stragglers catch up before you hit Bevois Valley. Also great for a couple of pints mid week if you want a quiet one. Tends to be a local place but they're all friendly as hell. Just don't get gobby and anoying in there. Aug 05
- Southampton has the best pubs ever! always a laugh! everyone tlks to everyone! good for a lads nite out! any pub u want!
- Best for ales in Freemantle are the Wellington Arms and the Waterloo Arms. However the Welly got taken over by a mad scotsman who frightened away all the regulars so it's a bit dead now, and the Waterloo destroyed its nice beer garden by building a conservatory that no-one uses.
In the centre, most pubs are high-density vertical student bars -- no seats and not much to drink other than expensive lager. The Cricketers Arms on Carlton Place is alright and open late, just don't wander into the Pensioners Arms by mistake.
- The Dungeon used to be great - about ten years ago. Then the clueless twats who call themselves the management, Tony and Sue, tried to turn it into a pikey house music dive by renaming it Legends - shades of The Office or what? - and failed miserably, au naturellement. Needless to say it's never recovered, but at least they got rid of the knuckleheaded thugs on the doors with their Phil/Grant Mitchell complexes. Dead hard they were - unless the local Hell's Angels were dropping in for their weekly raping and pillaging session plus customisation of the decor - then they'd be found hiding out back wetting their panties and tugging their forelocks. Pathetic. Don't even go there. You'll find the same kind of pub done 100 times better up the road at the Dorchester.
- Cool pubs (If you think Hackett and Burbury are cool - please don't disturb us in these bars) Bedford place area - Polar bar, Lizard Lounge, Fez, Chambers, Mono, Orange rooms. Just a damn fine pint and good atmosphere (your fake London T-shirt probably wont be appreciate here), The Alex, Cricketers, Pensioners, Havey's. Mid town - only one bar, Soul Cellar. That should do you.
- The link for the frog and frigate has expired try www.southampton-pubs.co.uk for all the pubs in town including featured pubs (the good old frog)
- 3 words for newcomers (particularly students) FROG AND FRIGATE... Difficult to find if you're new in town... just ask a taxi fella...
- Goblets is a must for it's free "eclectic" jukebox and great food. Always busy but always fun. They can be found on the web @ http://www.goblets.org.uk
- je
- The Cork and Bottle on Canute Road. Not the cheapest drinks but a nice atmosphere and shows all footie matches. Nice roast dinner on Sundays.
BEWARE - all pubs/clubs in Southampton arguably seem to have a common theme - disgusting toilets, with the exception of Wetherspoons.
- The Square has changed a little, still the same old building but 2 4 £5 is now thursdays, and Wednesdays is student night, and no you don't have to be a student to go, cheap drinks, live DJ playing some good stuff and cheap pints £1.80, not a penny more! Well worth a look!
- The Angel used to be the shit but now it's all gone to pot. The Hobbit, Clowns, Goblets...all good places. Goblets has an amazing jukebox.
- The Hobbit, for Lord of the Rings themed coctails, served in pint glasses, a large beer garden, battered old sofas and live music on Friday and Sturday nights.
- The Alexander "ALex" if you want a traditional pub with spirit! NOne of this fancy stuff, but full of young blood still! I like Seymours and The Wine Bar too for a touch of class!
- Start off right down the bottom of Town at Standing Order then Walkabout then work your way up town visiting each place to finish pubbing at the Polar Bar. Once in the Polar Bar find out who's going to The Rhino and be their friend!
- Waterloo Arms - on Waterloo Road, Freemantle. Real ale (CAMRA) pub. Quiz Tues. Good whiskey.
Guide Dog - Earls Road, Inner Avenue. Small pub - lovely. Sunday roast.
Duke of Wellington - Bugle St. in the old town. On the site of 12th century vaults. Good food. Real ales and sometimes guest ciders?!
Wellington Arms, 56 Park Road, Freemantle. Dark. 20's decor - interesting. No music, which is nice for a quiet drink.
Hobbit - Bevois Valley Road, Bevois Valley. Student pub. Used to be great in summer circa 1998 before it lost it's late license. Now it's *less* hectic on weekends [I stress 'less' as they now have to restrict the number of people that come in], once upon a time, pre-1998 I think, they would pack as many people as possible before 10.45 and then lock the doors - you'd probably leave at 1am! I remember once it was so packed, that on my return from obtaining a round of drinks the journey was so long and treacherous I had either spilled or drank the round by the time I got back. I hope it's like that again one day :)
Drummond Arms - Somerset Road, Swaythling. Local/student pub. Pool table. TV. Dog.
Bent Brief - Lodge Road. Cool barman who'll give you a good game of pool on one of the two tables. Tatty seats, grafitti. Guinness. Projector TV for sports. Great pub - poss my favouite.
Frog and Frigate - Canute Road, Ocean Village. You never plan to go here, but after 8 pints, as if by magic, you appear on the tables! "How did that happen?" you ask yourself - the next day you'll forget you went and wonder where you lost your jacket and why you have trouble walking.
Red Lion - High Street. Old, or at least the building is - the interior, with it's rickety stairs and balcony, is new. More of a theme bar. Good food and quiet, even on weekends.
Alexandra - Bellevue Road. Good traditional pub in town. Nice mixed crowd. Good jukebox. Table football. Sports on big projection TV. Superb selection of whiskeys and other spirits. 80 percent Austrian rum! Highly recommended.
- all except wetherspoon squares and yates, and the ones with wankers for doormen.
- joiner, rhino, hobbit, gobblets
- Goblets in town for pre club drinking
Giddy Bridge on London Road has cheap drinks and roof terrace but no tunes
- THE HOBBIT
- AVOID THE OLD FAT CAT! Tavern on Thursdays, £1 to get in, £1 for every drink! Can't get fairer than that. Varsity is good, you can use a Virgin Student card to get cheep drinks.
- goblets next tooff beat is rather cool as is the lizard lounge on bedford place
- Square Balloon is nice. Doesn't attract a bad crowd, just avoid Kareoke nite!!
- The dorchester before Lennons (same owners, same bouncers, I esp. like Mick the bouncer, v. v. nice man)
- The Tavern is obviously a very townie pub but £1 for all drinks on Thursday who can argue. The Giddy Bridge is the very cool but the Goblets is the best pub in the area.
- The Tavern (opposite the square) on a thursday night is good, esp. for students. Only £1 entry and once your inside all drinks are £1.........and may i add they do attract a "fresh faced" crowd!
- bar 1.50, where all costs £1.50, even stella and house doubles... but not after a certain time on certain nights
- Best Pub would have to be the Angel Pub just down from the Institute. Bless you Harry and Chris for cooking some of the best pub food in the universe.
- Lots to choose from
- The Frog and Frigate near Ocean Village is great on a Friday / Saturday if you fancy something a bit different. An amaziingly friendly and vibrant atmosphere, live music, and (relatively) cheap drinks await (happy hour 8-10 on Fridays). And it opens till 1 as well. Oooh. Definite clubbing alternative.
- goblets and the hobbit are probably the best. hobbit has massive outdoor area and sometimes has good live music
- the angel public house by the southampton institute has three pool tables, wicked food and reasonable prices.don't mess, though as the landlord is an oddly disturbing character with two like minded dobermans, built like brick shit houses and capable of cracking snooker balls in their teeth
- FROG AND FRIGATE- There is nowehere else like it. Walkabout/Standing Order both good meet-up spots. O'neills is a really good Irish bar on Oxford St.
- Lizard Lounge: I worshipped this place. There is NO finer bar. Beautiful faces, lovely staff, nice drinks. Everyone totally up their own arses, just the way I like it.
Centro was OK too.
Rest of them? Forget it.
- Too young
- i cannot stress enough how DRADFUL the Goose and Granite (now Tavern in the Town) is. avoid it at all costs.
on the other hand, good pubs are Goblets, The Hobbit, Lizard Lounge, Varsity, Giddy Bridge, Old Fat Cat...anywhere in london road vicinity really.
- Goblets has a very nice atmosphere and the quiz on Sunday nights is famous, so go to that.
The Fez Bar, above the Lizard Lounge is the only actually authentic theme bar I've been in and its very relaxing, in a morrocan sort of way.
- 4 words THE OLD FAT CAT
- Square, Yates, Goose and Granite, Avondale, lizard Lounge, Greenhouse, Wetherspoons etc etc
- Varsity has just opened on London Road, definitely catering to the more "sophistacated" (ie loaded and sporting Ben Sherman attire"). Ironically enough, this homage to Capitalism and smily faced extorion is actually housed in the old Trade Union Building....
- Its gotta be the Winston, Archers Road, opposite the Dell, friendly, wicked juke box (if you're playing pool, you must play 'Tracks of my tears' and 'Upside down').
Lizard Lounge, Bedford Place, trendy jazz-inspired bar, with Fez, the morrocan bar upstairs.
- There is too many pubs to name them, BuT, check out the joiners arms and lennons
- The London Hotel, Oxford Street Southampton
Pool teams Tuesdays and Thursdays - players always wanted.
Contact Alan (Tuesdays) and Ray (Thursdays)
- The ingnoramus who thought that Goblets was in a really old building needs medical treatment. The property was built in the 1930s on the site of Prospect Place as a representative of Southampton's old buildings. I am amazed that the lack of knowledge that so-called "students" have of the city and the English language. Why can't we get shot of them?
- The London Hotel, Oxford Street, Southampton
- The Alexandra, off London Road is a pretty good place for a pint. They used to do a Sunday pub quiz as well.
- The Fitzhugh on Milton Road - a "locals" pub but if you fancy a rendevous with the farmer-types of this world then check it out!!!
Avondale House (nr. London Road) - pretty cool and relaxed atmosphere.
- Goblets (Free House) in Above Bar Street (opposite the Cenotaph)free jukebox and monkey nuts and lovely barmen. Parkside Tavern (Marstons) in Poundtree Road friendly atmosphere and cheap beer. Goose & Granite in Above Bar Street (opposite Square Balloon) is cheap and quality for food and beer.
- Goblets, Above Bar, is THE place to be. Although small it is very friendly and even the goths meet there for lunch on Saturdays! Also does good chips and cheese
- The Square Balloon is an awful place. Full of girls in tiny lycra outfits trying to pull blokes with moustaches. wednesday is 2for the price of 1 cocktail night though and you can get very drunk quite cheaply.
- Above Bar in the high street is new, clean and with some good beers
- You mention the brilliant Square Balloon but please don't forget the Old Fat Cat, only a few shops down the main High Street from the Square Balloon. Great atmosphere but gets V. busyWeird bloke who stands outside River Isan
- 25 Oxfords St. A great place for meeting new friends, friendly, likeable. The manager is a real character, a mixture of straight and gay people. Visit it in a Sunday night, a real singalong, kareoke, dancing on the bar. Brilliant fun.
- The best place to be in Southampton on a Friday or Saturday night -- the Frog and Frigate pub on Canute Street. Derek plays guitar and it's awesome - a huge obscene singalong and a hell of a lot of fun! Also The Talking Heads (Swaythling) with live music, films theatre etc. And the Joiners pub (St. Mary's Street) which has a lot of live music (most nights).
The Tapas Bar in Ocean Village is packed with gorgeous women in the summer! - The Frog and Frigate is quite simply the greatest pub in the world (and has been since 1983)
- If you like students (of all ages) then The Hobbit in Bevois Valley is good, with a late night licence at peak times.
- Southampton used to be quite bad for night-life. Now we have 'The Square Balloon' which is at the top of town. The pub itself is massive - It is in a converted cinema. The interior design is wonderful. Basically the pub is definitely the place to go from now on. They do amazing cocktails, I am especailly keen on the 'Jo Jo Ivory' - if anyone knows what goes into it please let me know. I hope to see you all there. Remember NO TRAINERS!! It is hopefully going to get a late liscense so that everyone can get even more pissed on the cocktails.
- Can't agree that the Frog and Frigate is the best - this statement should be deleted. You have to be one of those people who's really into Derek to get off on this. OK maybe it's worth a visit, it's rather unique. The Hobbit's better, other places to try are: Clowns in Beavois valley, avoid Wednesdays unless you like drunken rugger buggers, the Square Balloon, the Dorch.
- Yes, the Square Balloon is a very nice place. O'Neill's is another good Irish pub. It is near Ocean Village.
- Others say stear clear of O'Neill's because of fluctuating prices.
