The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
  • The 'Pompey Chimes' football chant "Play up Pompey, Pompey play up" sang to the strike of Big Ben is reputedly the oldest football song still sang every game to date! Southsea beach is actually a sandy beach but as part of the sea defence to stop erosion they covered it all in pebbles! Part of 'Tommy' the musical film (Starring Roger Daltrey, Oliver Reed etc) was filmed on Southsea pier. ALLEGEDLY the director wanted to film the pier on fire using pyrotechnics but this was refused, but COINCIDENTALLY the pier caught fire anyway and this was caught on camera. Apparently a 1960/1970's series of DR WHO was filmed on No Mans Land fort in The Solent featuring the dreaded Daleks and using local sailors as non-speaking-role actors.
  • It’s a ghastly place. I stayed there just 1 night in June 2004. The area seemed to be like a red light district - there was a lap dancing club and some very seedy looking individuals. HOrrible.
  • i am one of the new managers at the skatepark so if you need any more specific info. mail me
  • There are a few weird people who walk the streets of Portsmouth especially Palmerston Road, they're very friendly if u take the time to speak to them, to list a few:- Rolpheroo, smokey Joe and Mole man Hue.
  • Southsea has booms and slumps in entertainment, culture, etc. One year it will seemingly be on the way up with loads of things opening up and going on, the next it will either appear to be in stasis or rapidly degenerating into a crap coastal resort. This is largely because Southsea musicians, artists, DJs and performers are so notoriously bloody apathetic. If it seems rubbish when you visit it, give it another chance at some other time. And bring an electric cattle prod with you to activate anyone who seems really interesting but is obviously being half-arsed and lazy. You know it makes sense. This area has the potential to be brilliant, but at the moment we have to be content with it being just "quite good" I'm afraid.
  • I never used to like Portsmouth (although I was born there) but Southsea's allowed me to re-discover my misplaced roots. Love it to pieces.
  • Very friendly town
  • Lots of tennis courts long the seafront. Some at Southsea common, others at Canoe lake, some out at cosham. All run by a company called Totally Tennis. Great staff - cheap too (I didn't mean the staff!). Get on down!
