At present I have traced my family back to my 4th Great Grandfather, �George CRAWSHAW� who I believe was born around 1798 and was buried at Stannington Church in 1839.

My family have lived at various locations in Stannington such as �Uppergate,� �Liberty Hill,� �Roscoe Bank� and �Low Road, Woodland View,� the latter being where my own grandfather was born, and some members of the family also lived at Taplin Road and Beechwood Road, Hillsborough.

Other known surnames associated with my family from the around the Stannington area are, �BRADWELL,� �VICKERS,� �SHARP,� MOSELEY,�WILSON,� �FRANCE,� �TOYNE,� �BARRATT� & �BAXTER.�

I am also aware of two other CRAWSHAW families from Stannington, one of which were �Farmers� originating from Bradfield and the other family who were �Wire Drawers� by trade, the latter family being possibly related, although at present I am not aware of any connections to the farming family.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone with connections to any CRAWSHAW�s from Stannington even if the connection is to the other two known families and would welcome any information that you could share.

I am trying to make it well known that Stannington appears to have a pet poisoner. I today, had my 4 year old cat put to sleep after the vets discovered (by way of blood tests) that she had been poisoned with anti-freeze. I have been made aware that over the last month there has been an increase in pet poisoning in this area. It is still on-going. Does anyone remember the Harper run which was an annual run in Stannington, it must have been about 50 years ago. It started in Stannington and included the woods in Loxley valley. I would be interested to know any more information. He shouldn't be forgotten, we should be very proud of someone from Stannington village who ran in the olympics long, long ago. Reply

On March 11th 1864, shortly before midnight, the newly built Dale Dyke Dam - situated in the Bradfield hills just outside Sheffield - collapsed. A colossal mountain of water thundered down the Loxley valley and on to Sheffield wreaking death and destruction on a horrific scale. The greatest devastation took place in the Malin Bridge, Hillsborough, and Owlerton areas. Excepting wars, this is now ac knowledged as one of the biggest man-made disasters in British history, and is annually recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. A series of events are being arranged to take place in the Bradfield/Malin Bridge areas throughout the early days of March 2004 to commemorate the occasion. Hi, I lived in Stannington years ago and I was wondering if anybody would remember my grandparents, who lived on Stannington Rd (622)until the late 60's- they were Wilf and Cissie Ibbotson. My family lived next door, and my parents were Tom and Sheila Cutler. My grandfather was called Thomas Crawshaw and he married Evelyn Hullah from the Leeds Area. Hi I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12.03.1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, in order to then further research their family lines. I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related to one of the flood victims or from anyone who would like to know the names concerned - I will happily send a fu ll list. Some of the victims are buried at Stannington and I have managed to find the graves of most of them but I have not been able to find the one for John HAWKSLEY. Can anyone confirm he is buried here? I too did some research on the Sheffield Flood in 1978. I have in my posession one of the memorial cards that were given out just after the flood. The card was given to me by Mrs B. Edwards and was formally the property of the late Mr. A Guyler of Pamona Street in Sheffield. He was living in Lea Road in Dronfield at the end of his life. I got my list of the dead and missing from The Complete History of the Great Flood at Sheffield by S. Harrison 'Sheffield Times' Office 1864. I have a complete bibliography if you require any more books to devle into. The grave you are searching for on my list says that he was interred at Stannington. I did not go grave searching because I was tracing the dam and its damage through the valley. Is it me or is anybody else fed up with the amount of youths hanging around "One Stop" and Spar? I think this requires some attension from the Police. Whats Your thoughts?
