pet poisoner by Elizabeth Rowley (Member 10273895) on 18-May-2012
I am trying to make it well known that Stannington appears to have a pet poisoner. I today, had my 4 year old cat put to sleep after the vets discovered (by way of blood tests) that she had been poisoned with anti-freeze. I have been made aware that over the last month there has been an increase in pet poisoning in this area. It is still on-going. It has left me devastated, cost a fortune in vets ... more >>

Olympic runner (Ernest?) Harper by Jan Wilson (Member 10243326) on 27-Dec-2009
Does anyone remember the Harper run which was an annual run in Stannington, it must have been about 50 years ago. It started in Stannington and included the woods in Loxley valley. I would be interested to know any more information. He shouldn't be forgotten, we should be very proud of someone from Stannington village who ran in the olympics long, long ago.

The Great Flood at Sheffield - The 140th Anniversary by Mick Armitage (Member 10007809) on 2-Dec-2003
On March 11th 1864, shortly before midnight, the newly built Dale Dyke Dam - situated in the Bradfield hills just outside Sheffield - collapsed. A colossal mountain of water thundered down the Loxley valley and on to Sheffield wreaking death and destruction on a horrific scale. The greatest devastation took place in the Malin Bridge, Hillsborough, and Owlerton areas. Excepting wars, this is now ac... more >>

Hi,
I lived in Stannington years ago and I was wondering if anybody would remember my grandparents, who lived on Stannington Rd (622)until the late 60's- they were Wilf and Cissie Ibbotson. My family lived next door, and my parents were Tom and Sheila Cutler. I have very fond memories of Stannington how it used to be, with Cyril the butchers, etc. Is there a historical society in Stanninton, I am... more >>

Hi, I don't live in Stannington but am interested in your George Crawshaw. My gggrandfather was George Crawshaw, born around 1797/8, married to Susan/Suzannah Ashworth in 1822. He was a stonemason I believe. Is this the same line as yours? If so I would appreciate hearing from you, as I have come to a brick wall.

    Message for Karen Lightowler.
I too did some research on the Sheffield Flood in 1978. I have in my posession one of the memorial cards that were given out just after the flood. The card was given to me by Mrs B. Edwards and was formally the property of the late Mr. A Guyler of Pamona Street in Sheffield.
He was living in Lea Road in Dronfield at the end of his life.

For Catherine Cooper and Karen Lightfowler
I'm doing some research on the Flood and am particularly interested in responses to it, e.g. poetry - not just as published in books, but perhaps on graves and on memorial cards. Would either of you have any information or leads?

Re graves - there is a site at http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/personal/cs1ma/flood/flood.html#index (go to 'Maps') which has some information.
