- Thomas Rose, his wife Jane and their children emigrated from Sturminster Newton in 1792 to become the first free settlers in the new colony of New South Wales (the only Europeans in Australia at that time were convicts and their guards from the Marines).
- MARK APLIN - spunk of stur - you can find him at Buy-Lo.
- 19th Century novelist Thomas Hardy had connections with the town - I believe he even lived in Stur for a while. Oliver Cromwell fought a battle against local people on nearby historical Hambledon Hill
