- The Ship & Castle, 80 Castle St, Loughor, Swansea, SA4 6TS, 01792 894873.
AVOID if you are vegetarian or hungry! My wife and I ordered vegetarian chilli from the menu, but when the food arrived it was clearly made with minced beef. Ok, an easy mistake we thought, but when we told the cook/landlady that we’d both received the wrong chilli, she would not admit that a mistake had been made and told me that the chilli was made with Quorn mince.
Now anyone (vegetarian or not) would know the difference between Quorn mince and minced beef, so when I told her that I eat Quorn mince almost every week and that there was no way that the chilli she served was made with it, she kept repeating ‘Do you want to see the packet’ over and over as if showing me a packet of Quorn mince would change the fact that the chilli she gave us was full of beef. Arrrrrgh.
She went on to say that big batches of vegetarian chilli & beef chilli are made and put into separate freezers, but she just couldn’t comprehend that a mistake had been made.
We even tried explaining that my brother had ordered the beef chilli and it was clearly the same as our ‘vegetarian’ chilli, but the thick twat just kept interrupting with ‘Do you want to see the packet’
When my wife said to the cook 'you should taste the chilli' she replied 'I don’t eat that, I only eat mashed potato'!!! So the cook doesn't even taste her own food!?! How fucked up is that?
They did refund the money for our food, but the service, arrogance, ignorance and plain stupidity of the cook ruined the occasion (my sisters birthday).
Marks out of 10? A big fat 0.
- As a student I loved the Rhyddings in Brynmill (cheap steaks alert), the Uplands Tavern in Uplands (surprisingly), Squares on Wind Street and my favourite was The Wig and Pen (now the Wig) on St. Helens. My over-21 friend got asked for ID here - not good for underaged drinkers.
If you like meeting dubious crowds try the Celtic Pride (Uplands)or the Tenby (Mount Pleasant), if you don't avoid like plague.
For nice character ie log fire, go to the Antelope in Mumbles.
- the lava bar defo hot spot...
- La Cantina in Wind Street. Love this place! Its probably the most laidback of all the Wind Street Pubs. Sells load of different shots, including TEQUILA!!! And I love that Tequila Rose!
- the orange house is cool on the kingsway.
- The marquase and the three sisters
- EVERYWHERE DOWN WIND ST!!
- if u want the shits after a night on the town go to the ignorant staff and shity beer of the celtic pride or if u lookin for a prositute just ask behind the bar the land lady will help the most shitty bar in swansea
- Champers Wine Bar on the High Street - gay pub with usual pub hours, cheap drinks and a good place to get the night going! DJ every Saturday playing all the campest tunes and very freindly clientele (like myself!)
Apparently there are plans to change next door into another gay club although these rumours are unconfirmed. So long as the management don't let under 18s in, then it'll certainly give H20 a run for its money....
- Walk about, Bank statement, rasbutens, The Square, Vodka bar, The orange shop, potters wheel, The Ice Bar,
- Jc's in the uni. and the antelope and the mumbles rugby club are the best pubs i can think of
- GJ
- Rock and Fountain and the Newton, both in Newton literally opposite each other
- dito
- The singleton (when it isnt shut down)
- Too Many, just wander around for a bit. Watch out for scary pissed townies.
- WE USED 2 SAY PUBS WEN SUM 1 FARTED BUT THEN THE POSTY CAME2 THE VILLAGE AND THES ALL WE WOOD AVE BEEN SAYIN
- The Dunvant Pub, Spinning Wheel, Commercial are good outskirts pubs.
City centre pubs are a bit shitey, Wind street's just too packed on the weekend, and mumbles if full of kids.
Bank Farm club on the caravan park by Port Eynon beach is alright for family nights out.
- Quadrant Gate, jst next to the Quadrant obviously, popular on a friday night, where the younger adults like to drink and listen to the heavy music. The office, also popular on a friday night, live bands play often.
- Try the Uplands Tavern in the heart of Uplands if you like a good atmostphere, they have live music practically every night. The landlord runs a tight ship and there's no messing about but it is getting quite a name for fantastic music. Full of a mix of people, students, regulars etc. Open Mike Night on Tuesday is worth a look, maybe even get up and play yourself for a free pint. Many a drunken night spent in the Tav..top place!
- go to wind street (said 'wine street') or get a train to cardiff
- why avoid the westbourne?landlord is a shit but the beer is great;honest!and if you fancy a curry later. . . . .
- The Westbourne is a remarkable place in that it serves very few people under the retirement age - AVOID! The Singleton used to be good, but the beer is expensive for Swansea, and the landlady has been known to get on the wrong side of many a customer. Best place - the renovated Bar Reef on Walter Road which has a cracking atmosphere and music to match.
- nice place to go in swansea is the potters wheel cos you get glassed as soon as you walk in and that saves u a few bob doesnt it..only joking its quite good if u like lemonade...all the rest is imported from amsterdamm.dont beleive me?? ask chris
- 'Quids Inn'. Why the fuck is it called 'Quids Inn'? it costs £2 to get in and the drinks are far from costing £1. Anyone got any suggestions?
- gower inn on hot summers afternoon on your way home from the beach
- The Weatherspoons is 'The Potters Wheel' at the end of the kingsay, but in my opinion not as good since been re-vamped. For a quiet nice cheap pub with a quality Fosters- The Singleton near the Grand!!!!!!
- the builders'arms does a wonderful cheap in price sunday lunch without the organist try it one sunday
- Monkey
- Yates's is a quality venue with a good atmosphere. If you are in Mumbles - try to miss out The Pilot cos it is shit.
- Potters wheel at the end of the Kingsway. opposite europa. Nice mix of people though attracts alot of students. food isn't wonderful but cheap enough. Gone downhill since they revamped it but still a good starting point for a night out if you don't mind the lack of music.
- Swansea gay scene now located at H20 (Formerly the Waterside), in the marina. The old Palace is now a straight club. There is also another reasonably new addition to the Swansea gay scene in the form of the Exchange bar on the Strand.
- All of Wind Street for 90% of pubs that you look good in if you are over 20, if under that then the Kingsway is for you.
Wind Street pubs are ranging from The (Massive) Square, The (Very Cheap) Goose and Granite and the Bank Statement, Newly furbished Yates very thin tarty girlies hang out, The Hogshead, The Australian Bar (fab to watch a match in) , and many more. Also a new food place opened very recently, very, very expensive, and over rated by many people. Many many other small pubs round Swansea which are all very nice to visit. Mumbles is brill in the Summer too..
- The Vivian Arms in Sketty has one of the most challenging and thought provoking DSunday night "Pub Quizzes" I have ever had the pleasure to be involved in.
- Avoid the Westbourne!
- Eli Jenkins, (Town centre) Barons pub (pound a pint) The Smokin' Dog (Uplands)
- The Glamorgan Arms is an atmospheric pub on the outskirts of Swansea, famous for its huge outdoor play area, especially popular with students after a few too many pints of Beamish.
- The no sign bar has now re-opened and now fits in with the rest of the revamped, bordering on cosmopolitan lower Wind Street area.
- No Sign Inn a victim of the times. Gone. Coach House (biker, leather jacket brigade) gone downhill. Potter's Wheel does many guest ales and has no piped music and a large non-smoking area. Games such as Giant Connect-4 and Jenga and bar billiards available at Firkin houses. If you're looking for a quiet civilised city centre pub on Fridays and Saturdays, try the Builders' Arms or the Singleton (although Singleton is quiet in the sense of 'fewer people' - it has bands very often.) Builders does dencet Sunday lunch if you can stomach the organ music (really!)
- Pubs actually in town aren't so good, but you could try the Office, or something in Wind St. A nice Bar(as opposed to a Pub) is Cafe Deveraux, which is next to The Brasserie (if you fancy something un-Mac-like, and have the money).
- The Coach House on Wind Street isn't quite what it used to be. There are a couple of pubs in the Morriston area which are quite nice, the Millers down in Ynystawe is quite friendly and quiet if that's what you want. The Dears Leap can pretty lively on a weekend, if sometimes full of rugby players. The Mumbles is still the highlight of the entire city, followed pretty closely by the North Gower area. The Greyhound and King Arthur are worth a mention, whilst the King's Head is really good during the summer for surfers and saucy birds.
- Just to let you know that the Mumbles is heaving during the summer with groups of drunk lads and ladies on stag/hen nights. They are attempting to do the renowned Mumbles mile. So, if you want to go to Mumbles during the summer months the only answer is to get pissed with the rest of them.
- Too late: "probably the best pub in the world" (Pallas guide to Wales), The No Sign Inn, has just closed down.
- Tavern on the lake which is situated in Singleton Park next to Swansea University.
- The Duke which you will find on the opposite side of the road to the Coach House.
- The University Bar (JCs) was the first of it's kind to make it into the CAMRA Good Beer Guide; as if you cared after five pints of Brains SA.
- Yates's Wine Lodge - Wine St (from 22nd july 1997), the venue will serve quality food luchtimes with live entertainment and dj's during the evenings - for more information e-mail teaguie@aol.com or yateswl@compuserve.com.
- Don't go to the Fine Leg and Firkin and let them know it's your birthday, they make you stand on the table whilst they sing.
- The Strand off wind street is great for food and Friday and Saturday are a good for music and laughs!!
- the no sign bar has now REOPENED.Not quite as good but better than a kick in the head
- The Antelope in Mumbles
