The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call

- Honestly speaking, Thorne has many pubs for its size and like many other little towns the qualities and character of each pub varies considerably (as does the clientele). Here's a summary of the most commonly visited:
The Windmill: Probably the most friendliest about town and the beer is often good. It's probably the favorite of many people and is well respected for its cleanliness and general good order. Service isn't bad either. Definitely worth a visit.
The Red Bear: not as nice as the Windmill and often congregated by several idiots hanging around the pool table area. The video-jukebox has a good selection of tunes though, particularly if you like 80's videos. However, the pub as a whole is starting to get a bit tired and is in need of a makeover - it can get a bit pikey (so to speak), I've seen fights break out there.
The Green Dragon: used to be quite entertaining when I was younger, once had a good jukebox and karaoke machine. Always a place for locals generally, so watch your back. It has two sides, and is often a tight squeeze to get served.
The Canal Tavern: Generally a nice safe place to visit and good for meals. It's branched out its back room so that there's now a disco for the over 25's, which to be fair isn't bad considering the only other place is Harts (discussed later). Okay for a quick drink and often the starting place for many people. A bit of a haven for idiots in the bar left of the door. Head right when you walk in for a better experience.
The White Hart: quite notorious for being a violent pub as its often the hang out of inexperienced drinkers or the Thorne hardcases. Speaking from experience it can be a mixed bag, but if you've any real doubts I'd avoid it personally. There's nothing to see and most people drink there prior to entering its backroom that has been converted into the nightspot called 'Harts'...
Harts: was fun once, but its been through many changes. Often full of teenyboppers (read: a fresh faced crowd!) and wannabe Mrs Robinsons, the music is often dance/chart fodder. However, it can be a violent place as the local muppets often get a bit too lubricated and decide to lash out - even I've been smacked in there. Oh and everybody seems to smoke, so you'll feel as if you've smoked 60 cigarettes the next morning. Do yourself a favour and only enter if your not expecting too much. I once heard that gypsies smash the main pub up every so often. Do yourself a favour and go home instead...
Bar One: or some such, its basically a coffee shop by day and nice enough inside but it could have been so much better. Rumors of a real wine bar made everybody pick up their ears, but its more of a white-washed lounge with a few sofas. Nice to see bouncers outside supposedly guarding you, but its a bit of a disappointment really. Still, worth a visit if only to sit down for a change and have a conversation. Fingers crossed it gets better with time. The entrance fire-doors do look like they've been taken from a college though.
The Corner Pin/Mailed Horse: used to be fairly rough once and got a decent makeover a few years ago. Sadly, I haven't been in there since a friend of mine got punched. Often a local hangout. Might be better now.
The Punchbowl: had a massive makeover and is supposedly quite nice, huge carpark and better management. Worth a look as its often ignored by the local idiots.
There's one or two others but there's are the few I visit sometimes. In a nutshell, go to the Canal Tavern and The Windmill. If you're feeling brave go to the Red Bear (you'll generally be okay), but I'd avoid the White Hart and especially its rear nightclub. Life's too short for silly fights and petty arguments.
