The very first post on this webiste (Torphins) was from Malcolm Reid, a former resident of Torphins who lived in Australia. He came over to visit Scotland, where I met up with him and one of his relatives Gillian. However, I have since lost contact with Malcolm, and I think he now lives in Southend. Would love to get back in touch.

My grandfather Duncan Lawson had an aunt living at Beltie Terrace, Elspet (d 1942) and Peter Buchan. Any Buchans there related?
He was also a member of the 7th Batt Gordons Terretorial Force. They had a drill station at Torphins (1912). Does it still exist?
He lived/worked at Hillhead, Midmar for a Miss Donald when he was 16, in 1912. Any knowledge of Hillhead?
His mother lived at Tamnagorn. She was Mary Gordon Alexander, nee Lawson, married to Alexander Alexander. She died in 1936. They had a daughter, Sarah who married James Donald.
These places are close to Torphins, that is why I ask.
I have visited Torphins, (I live in Bristol). and will visit again sometime in the future.

by alan lawson (Member 10139049) on 12-Aug-2006
Hi Kelly,
Yes, I am still after info. I'd given up hope on that site, I visit occasionally just to check. I was really surprised and happy to see your message. Could you possibly mail me at my e-mail address, just to get a link, and I can let you know what I know. My grandfather was wounded in WW1, in the Gordon Highlanders. |He worked at Hillhead Farm, for a Miss Donald, at Midmar while he was a territorial in the 7th Battalion (found this out at Kew)His mother, Mary Gordon Lawson lived at Tamnagoron (excuse spelling) while she, I think, was married to Alexander Alexander, a farmer. I've got the name of a couple of cottages but they are buried somewhere at the moment. Mary died in 1936, and is buried in Cluny kirk-yard, which I have visited. My grandfather was transferred to the Labour Corps, after being wounded at, I think, Beaumont Hamel, on the Somme, and was working in Wiltshire when he met my Granmother. He never returned to Scotland. He wqas born in Marywell, Birse (now generally called Ballogie). I could go on, but if you are in a position to help, or give me 'local info', then I'd be greatful if you'd contact me at lumpylawson@blueyonder.co.uk
Thank You,
Alan Lawson

As mentioned elsewhere on this site, I lived in Inschley Place from 1949 until 1955.
During my years away I lost contact with Flora (Flo) Wood, my 'foster' sister. I do know she married a Charlie McClaren and they had one toddler son in 1960. I beleive they emigrated to
New Zealand in the 60's and later returned to Scotland. Does anyone in Torphins have any idea
where Flo is now?

I used to live in Torphins, well up at Learney actually, but it was a great place to grow up in.
I remember Tornaveen school closed down at the time when I was at torphins primary, and we had an influx of new pupils (well about seven or eight) it was all very exciting. How easily pleased we were in those far off days!
The cafe was still open just over the road, but it closed down as well whilst I was at primary!
There were two petrol stations, a shoe repair shop, fish shop, (Stanley's), the old hall beside the Learney, the church hall in the square, Hector Kidd in the Spar, the chemist shop opposite. If anyone remembers these and other things about the village in the late 60's/early 70's please add to my list, it's nice to remember things from the past. ... more >>

Hi. My dad Frank Cruickshank was brought up in Tornaveen post office along with his older brothers Sandy, Peter and John. Dad left in the mid 50's for national service but my uncle Peter ran it untill the late 70's untill he died. My aunty Betty Cruickshank was a teacher at Torphins school untill she retired some time in the mid 70's and has now sadly died. Her husband John Cruickshank was the local postie, they lived at 1 Main st. My dad's older sister was Jean Henderson who's husband was a taylor and had a shop in the square. Dad married a Yorkshire lass and they both live in Leeds. We used to have family holidays and stay either at Tornaveen or Torphins and have great memories. Ring any bells? ... more >>

Hi,
yes it certainly does ring some bells!
I remember visiting the Tornaveen shop quite often, and remember Peter very well, I remember the sale or "roup" when he decided to retire, there was a beautiful old "Fry's Chocolate" display cabinet, I tried to get my dad to buy it but he wouldn't hear of it, since it was really of no use to us whatsoever on a farm!!
I remember Mrs Cruickshank at Torphins school, she was a great teacher, adding to my fond memories of primary school, I think she was my teacher around P4/P5 time, kept you on your toes with mental arithmetic questions, tricky then and tricky now!!
They would both have been nice places to visit on holiday,
best regards,
Allan. ... more >>

Well following an old school photo in this weeks P & J decided to search tornaveen and up comes this site - well I remember going to Peters shop on way to school - we got one penny on a Monday and managed to get a sweetie everyday from him!!! I was in class 3 when we left tornaveen but still have some memories of a super primary school - dad was chaffeur at Findrack House for Col Crabbe - maiden name was Duff - oh to have these old days back eh! ... more >>

Was your teacher a Mrs Campbell? I seem to remember she moved to house on Learney Hill after she retired, all the pupils from Tornaveen school had great memories of her.
- Re: Old timer
by Graeme Simpson (Member 10196444) on 29-Oct-2006
I used to go to Tornaveen school from primary 2 - 6 then Torphins Primary 7 . Mrs Campbell was the teacher at Tornaveen and was great at her job, on fine days we used to sit out side to do our lessons. I always remember she used to were fancy hair nets and the time she lost one in one of nature walks in the wood we all had to look for it. Also we used to play in the old hall up the back of the school because under the stage were all these old costumes that we used to dress up in. Mrs Campbell's granddaughter (Miss Jamaica) was one of the contestants in the Miss world contest either won or was high up in the ranking I think. I remember Peter Cruickshank was in the shop and used to go around in his van collecting eggs for the Egg Marketing Group. ... more >>

Bloody hell, the shennanagins that went on at Tornaveen!!
I take it her granddaughter never visited Tornaveen, or else it would have been in the People's Journal or something, I have most of the back copies.(only joking, i only have the one where i won the "bonnie baby" although I was about 5 I think, in the photo my mam sent in!!)
I didn't know that Peter collected eggs from roundabout, no battery hens in those days, only fresh produce and nothing fancy flown in from the other side of the world, out of season, how did we survive.
Mind you, I think we did most our shopping at Hector Kidd's before Fine Fare opened up at the Bridge of Dee in Aberdeen!
Alan Taylor from Drumlassie came over to Torphins school at the same time as you I think, can't remeber who else? ... more >>

Well I remeb=mer the grnadaughter - for some reaosn or other mum found a cut out of her in the paper but must admit was prob best years of my school life wi Mrs Campbell - Remember doing a concert with her and the rooms up the back of the school where props were kept!!! Always meaning to have a run round past!!!! I remember the Taylors at Drumlassie!
- Re: Old timer
by Allan Smith (Member 10089999) on 18-Sep-2007
I still hear from Alan Taylor now and again, his father passed away earlier this year, he was a really nice man. I used to stay over at Drumlassie and play football with Alan on the "pitch" with "real goals" that his father had made for him, what a lucky loon!
I think everyone I ever met who had Mrs Campbell as a teacher raved about her being the best teacher ever, nothing fancy or trendy, just a good all round education.
Some of them were nearly as clever as us Torphins lot!! ... more >>

I remember Mrs Campbell, great teacher, I think the kids were her family. I went the same time as Bryony Smart.....we had great fun in the hall at the back of the school, think I got married to Bryony Smart quite a few times. I also remember Evelyne Smith from Learny, she was my idol......great at sport & she seemed so tall at the time. I remember Cruikshanks shoppie, my older brother Gordon used to drive us there, very nice man.I seem to remenber a Susan Croft as well.My dad "Bill" used to work for the forestry commission & we stayed at Ewans Croft.
Seems so long ago. Besy School days of my life. Torphins was okay as well. Alan Gerrie. ... more >>
