POP FACTORY LAUNCH THEIR AWARDS
The Pop Factory, Porth has just celebrated its fifth birthday, and during its lifespan the renowned Rhondda outlet has cemented a firm position at the fore of the contemporary music scene. The impressive array of talent which has appeared in the recent Pop Factory produced, HTV series, ‘The Guest List’ pays testament to the standing of a venue which specialises in a variety of areas of entertainment.
The profile of The Pop Factory will be the talk of the Welsh music scene, via its 4th annual awards ceremony, set for Saturday, December 3. In advance of that prestigious
event, a launch party was held at The Hard Rock Café, in Cardiff. There were an abundance of record industry glitterati in attendance, and the scene was set for what promises to be a memorable night next month.
The afternoon brought together a cross section of well known faces from label executives through to some of the acts that have made the principality such a hotbed for diverse and dynamic music. ‘The Guest List’ presenters Mel Daley and Colin Francis introduced the audience to a range of categories that will be decided by the voting public, and certain specific honours which stand outside of nomination. Meanwhile, the lads of Goldie Lookin’ Chain (who have made The Pop Factory their second home) provided jocularity as they mingled with the masses. However, the piece de resistance was the appearance of the Welsh tip for the top for 2006, The Automatic. This fiery foursome demonstrated scorching sonic skills via a blistering four song set, and their single ‘Recovery’ is out now on B-Unique (the home of The Kaiser Chiefs and The Ordinary Boys).
A taste of another wonder of Wales-The Automatic are set to soon join the elite, and head for the premier league of principality pop along with Feeder, The Super Furry Animals, The Stereophonics, Bullet For My Valentine, Lost Prophets, Funeral For A Friend, and of course, GLC. These acts, along with the pop princesses, Jem and Charlotte Church, the new order of The Poppies, The Heights, Ashokan and Sybridion, plus a host of others are in competition for an array of awards to be announced on December 3. There are also other honours to be bestowed on what will be an action packed evening!
The fan is now called upon to make an input and decide who should collect the prizes, and to register your votes head for www.thepopfactorymusicawards.com
To add to which there is the chance for two lucky people to be in attendance for the coveted after show party! To be in the running for this unique opportunity to mix with the stars, you need to vote for your favourite Welsh band from a quartet that consists of: Goldie Lookin’ Chain, Funeral For A Friend, Lost Prophets and The Stereophonics. Please text ‘tpf’ followed by a space, and then your nomination and name to 60300…e.g. ‘tpf prophets joebloggs’. Texts have to be submitted before 12 noon on Wednesday, November 30, and each message sent will cost 25p (plus your standard network charge). You will receive a reply confirming that your entry has been received, and all the best!!!
In the meantime, look out for ‘The Guest List’ at the Pop Factory awards launch on HTV on Monday, November 21, and an hour long awards special will be broadcast on the same channel on Tuesday, December 6 (check your television schedules for programme times closer to these events). Please also remember to keep your eyes peeled for an abundance of forthcoming events at the Porth base via www.thepopfactory.com
Other details are also available via 01443 688500 or email: admin@thepopfactory.com.

COURTNEY PINE AT THE PARC & DARE
Since his debut album in 1987, Courtney Pine has played a pivotal and inspirational role in the dramatic transformation of the British Jazz scene – pushing the boundaries and incorporating the old and the new with innovation and sensitivity. His awesome live performance has earned him the accolade of the UK’s most important jazz instrumentalist at the forefront of British Jazz. Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services are delighted to welcome Courtney to the Parc & Dare Theatre on Thursday 17 November at 8.00pm, as part of the current Where Good Music Matters season.
Pine is also a renowned presenter, broadcaster, musical director and the recipient of many awards, including a Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and an O.B.E. Now on air on BBC Radio 2, Courtney is back on Monday nights with his eighth series of his specialist jazz show Jazz Crusade, as well as putting the final touches to his brand new album due for release in October.
Courtney' s current album DEVOTION was four years in the making. The album follows his critically acclaimed and award winning “Back In The Day” set and this time features stunning vocal contributions from Carleen Anderson, David McAlmont and Jacqui Dankworth, and sitar player Sheema Mukhurjee of Trans Global Underground fame. DEVOTION encompasses many styles, infusing Courtney’s trademark jazz foundations with contemporary sounds and a global feel with Eastern/Asian influences often to the fore.
More recently, at a special event at The Sage Gateshead, Courtney launched his animated children’s film JAZZDAZE as part of the Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2005. The film, includes musical contributions from Maxi Jazz and Eska Mtungwesi, Dennis Rollins and Byron Wallen, as well as Courtney's award winning band. The film was premiered and followed by the first live performance of the musical score.
Tickets for this jazz legend range from £13.00 to £17.50 (stalls concession £12.00) and are available now from The Parc & Dare Box Office on 01443 773112. ... more >>

Does anyone here remember a bloke who came from either Pentre or Treorchy who had the nickname Legs? Well, I was in the Pandy Inn the other night and I heard he died about a year ago from a heart attack. Is it true? I hope so, as the t**t was breathing my good air.

INTERSTING FACT: OR VICIOUS GOSSIP...YOU DECIDE.
Cliff Richard,(Yes the Christian Virgin!)had a gay relationship with a baker from Treherbert called Keith Doughty... My mother reckons that Cliff's Rolls Royce would be a regular fixture in the 70's...Parked up Keith's alley...(VICAR!)

These days, I can't venture forth in Treorchy as i have long-hair..and all the mong-boys who hang around with their short sqaddie hair cuts hate me on sight!....Treorchy & the Valley's was once a proud working class hotbed of Socialism and revolutionary fevour..now it's full of builders&decorators and young trackie wearing dead eyed 'lads' with thier Burberry Baseball caps on back-to-front as they speed up and down the same stretch of road in their souped up stupid lookin' cars...always aggressively angry their faces contorted like a twisted knuckle..Boy are they UGLY. Where are they all off to in such a hurry?, it's not as if they actually DO ANYTHING FOR A LIVING IS IT?!? No. I know where they're going "Up their Nan's for tea and pocket money!"......... Impregnating Tamzin, Jodie, Kylie or some other stupid fuckin'fish faced insolent looking 15 yr old with their lager & crap soap bar scented semen...I wish someone would invent a sterilizing gun I'd set it on full blast and give these retards what for! AM I turnin' fascist in my old age? Who cares just deliver me from evil.Actually it's not even anyhting as focused as evil it's just plain old stupidity... ... more >>

My Great grandmother was Edith Gregory. She was born in Ystradyfodwg in 1876 and married Arthur Glass.
After He was killed in a mining accident in 1909 Edith moved to Bristol with her baby daughter, my Grandmother. She died in 1914.
Is this any connection?

| Park and Dare?

Can anyone tell me if the old cinema, Park and Dare? is still in existence? I remember going there way back in 1966 when I spent a week with my aunt and uncle who lived in Pencai Terrace. Me and my pal were beaten up just around the corner by some morons who were posing in front of their girls. Telling them to F... Off didn't help though. Only been back a couple of times since. My family originate from Treherbert.

Yeah, that's the one. I actually had many holidays in Treherbert. An annual treat in the 50's and early 60's! My parents' ashes were buried up the mountain over looking the valley in 1993. My last remaining relatives, apart from cousins, though now lost touch, Dawn in Treherbert and Kay in Porth, died just over two years ago. Rennis Smith and Addie Atkins. Both hitting the 90 mark so not a bad innings you can say. They were two of a family of 13! Course, there was no tele in those days! Hope to be revisiting my parents last resting place with my brother Robert and wives in late summer. ... more >>

I'm searching for any information on a William Vaughan who we believe was born in Treorchy in or around 1882.
We believe he left when he was in his early teens, and spent some time with an Aunt in Feltham, Middlesex.
Also there may be a connection to a naval Commodore Vaughan.
Thank You
Daniel Vaughan

Regarding Commodore (?) Vaughan.
My mother was Nina Scott born in Bute Street Treorchy in 1915.
She was married to her childhood sweetheart named Vaughan when she was in her late teens early 20s. He went on to become a high ranking officer in the Royal Navy and I think ran the Portsmouth Naval Base post war.
My mother worked at the Naval and Military Club in London during the war.
Sometime after the war they divorced and my Mother remarried and went to Australia in 1948.
She died in 1992. The only reference to Vaughan was in her original passport I saw briefly.
My Aunt still lives in the family home in Treorchy told me the story. My Mother never talked of it.
