- Truro's a great place to live. I've lived in loads of places all over the country and I can say that truro was the BEEESSSTT!!! Loads of cute fit surfies, loads of wierd shops, ultra laid back atmosphere, no chavs or scally types ruining the place out for a fight, loads of good pubs that serve real beer, dead close to the best beaches and countryside in the world!!! WAKE UP CORNWALL, YOU'VE GOT THE LOT!!!
- The cobblestones and surface drains!
- Loloz Cave and the cathedral
- The problem with "lived here all my life" is, often one cannot see the wood for the trees. Truro has many nice attributes. I used to visit your city back in the very early fifties & yes, those seats in the old movie house were certainly very comfortable back then - particularly if you were accompanied by a lovely girl.
I recently made a return visit to your fair city after a fifty three year absence. I found it to be just as delightful now, as those many years ago. I walked the streets as I did back then, taking in all the delights that Truro has to offer. I was sorry to see the old hospital abandoned & ready for the demolition squad. That building holds special memories as I left two parts of me there. - One being my Appendics, the other - my heart. I got over the former in about six weeks, but the latter has taken a lifetime. She really was the most beautiful girl, - but that's another story.
As for Newquay, I used to "know" it fairly well, having been stationed at RAF StEval from eraly 1950 - 1953. On this visit, I found the town to be looking a little "tacky," with chewing-gum all over the sidewalks etc. & so many small "Greasy Spoon" type restaurants. I missed the Cornish dialect. The place seems to have been over-run with people from other parts of the country.
But the real Cornish people are still very delightful to chat with, particularly when they heard my Canadian accent.
I have since returned to the country I now call home (I've lived here for over 48 years now), but hope to visit your part of this small world again before my travelling days are done.
Thanks to each & every one of you who helped make my visit so enjoyable.
- * Nearby Malpas and the creeks.
- Lots of Pigeons! not to big to walk around, plenty of food shops
- Truro people are great.
- It's not in central England which means that less people have to deal with the trauma of living near Cornwall
- Plenty of cliffs to push Cornish people off
- Not much really, this is Cornwall...
- No crime
Nice and quiet
Buses from _everywhere_
- the locals
- great new long-haul travel agents - Spirit of Travel - near the Museum - v.good advice on round-the-world cheapie tickets or vising Oz or N.Z on the cheap.
- The whole atmosphere. Very little rivalry in the pubs/clubs unlke Newquay where things can get dodgy when townies clash with surfers.
- its small, its friendly, it's relatively cheap to shop, eat etc,
- Low crime, you can walk about pissed out of your head at 2 or 3am but not feel worried about being mugged. Good shopping. No Riff-Raff.
- Truro has been called 'Small version of NORWICH - Norfolk'. It has a Great Cathederal, and really nice shops. Everybody is just so friendly. You could spend all day talking to a stranger, and get NO shopping done. They have a V.good Car Hi-Fi shop, called "Flying Sparks" - in Kenwyn Street, and there is an NCP car park beside from which you can walk in to town in a couple of minutes. Just so nice to walk around, and take in the local atmosphere. BAD POINTS... Difficult to park next to the Railway station.
- It's got more shops than Newquay - but not many.
- There is also a nice trip on the River Fal to Falmouth, Victoria Gardens, and Truro is only 15-20 miles from NEWQUAY (North Coast) best beaches in the world, and a similar distance from the South Coast. Has the world's crappiest cinema, which seats dating back to the 1950's (at least), Dolby Surround Mono, and films getting there only about three months after release.
If staying in Truro you must visit: - St Ives
- Newquay
- Falmouth
- Dartmoor/Penwith Moor.
- St Michaels Mount
The biggest problem is that it takes an age to get there [Truro] by train. It's >1 hour from Plymouth, which is only 50 miles away!
- A very good net service from Avel Computers.
- Truro isn't crap - it's just a small city, and you can't expect too much of it. It's the people that make a place, and they always made it fun for me.
- treasure chest second hand shop lots of wierd and wionderful things at a price you can afford
