- Sir John Barrow - 1764-1848. Secretary to the Admiralty, the best since Samuel Pepys. Responsible for Napoleon's exile to St. Helena. Author of the classic report ‘The Mutiny Of The Bounty’ and other books. Founded the Royal Geographical Society. Around the North Polar region, Barrow Strait, Cape Barrow and Point Barrow keep his name in perpetual remembrance. A monument on Ulverston's Hoad Hill, was erected in his memory. It is a replica of the Eddystone lighthouse.
