my nan ellen smith,along with her sisters doris and janet were at aldersbrook childrens home between 1927-1939.. she tells me they were very tough times ..they were sent there after there mother(alice smith) died and father (joseph smith) was sent to prison for not paying for them .they originally came from tinto road canning town!! does anybody recall any of them???? All i know about my Father is that he separated from my mother in 1943 and my late mother would never speak about him. I do remember at the time of my mothers death 1n 1963 when i was 20 an elderly distant cousin on my mothers side telling me he was brought up in the Aldersbrook home for boys and i thought she said it was in we st ham, but i could have misheard her at time. My Fathers name is Leonard Henry Thurston and according to his Wedding Certificate he was aged 22 in 1941, which would mean that he was born in 1919, but i cannot find any trace of his birth in that year. There was however a Leonard Thurston born in west ham in 1925. Hi my husband James Oliver Charles Seaney was in the home from appro 1937-1939, he remembers the time there as being very tough, he said they had to eat tribe, which made his stomach churn, so he used to throw it under the table, he also remembers there being two nurses one was Nurse Jones, and Nurse Ider, they always seemed to work together, he remembers that he was with them at Polzeath Cornwel l, he says can remember getting a good hding if you didn't do as you was told. He was in the home with his sisters Margaret (Peggy) and his baby sister Norma Helena who died when she was 8months old with gastro enteritis, the reason they were there was because thier mother was killed when James 3rd birthday, and their dad couldn't afford to keep they so he was put in prison. Hi, my dad was in Aldersbrook Childrens home from about 1924 to 1934. He remembers a lot about it. Particularly two friends of his Charlie and Kenneth Goff who were there at the same time. He would love to know how they are if they are still around. My dad was stationed at Pontefract Barracks in Yorkshire during the war where he met my mum. They have been married for 65 years this June. We took hi m back to Aldersbrook Home last year and it brought back many memories for him. If anyone remembers my dad please get in touch.
