Cringing Cult of Celebrity
- Well, I'll add myself anyway. I stumbled across this site whilst looking for links for my own site. I had to laugh. I spent ten years in West Buckland, most of them at the school. And whilst it was quaint, I was glad to escape!
- Forgot to mention, the two Bath rugby players Stephen Ojomoh and Victor Ubogu were both in the same year as me here as well.
- Brian Aldiss, the science fiction author went to West Buckland School, which is basically the only thing West Buckland has in it, and its weird that this place is on the books whilst nearby South Molton, sheep town full of mutants isn't.
Anyone remember me, Jasper Sharp, at the School from 1980-1989. Happiest days of my life. (jasper_sharp@hotmail.com)
- Famous for West Buckland School where Johnathon Edwards (of World record Triple Jump Fame) was educated.
- I think that you are missing a celebrity. Delderfield the author and playwright went to that big school, 'God is an Englishman' you will remember. He describes the area very well in that book.
- A previous reader has said that RF Delderfield is West Buckland's most famous ex-resident. That must be right. But the book that tells the story of West Buckland School is "To Serve Them All My Days" If you live in the area (and I do) you can actually identify places and roads and farms , even though Delderfield has changed all the names. One of The main characters in the book (also a superb 13 part BBC TV drama 1980) is 'Algy Herries' who's wife is 'Ellie'. In the East Buckland Church yard you can find the grave of 'Arnold Harries' and his wife 'Elizabeth' who were the actual headmaster and his wife during Delderfield's time as a pupil at the school!
