- Helen Mirren was born and bred in Westcliff, attending St Bernards School. her family still live in the area.
- Ian Newby. He came to the area from South Africa and is (to quote the Southend Standard) 'our very own crocodile hunter'. He has a sanctuary in Wakering where he keeps all the crocs that he captures. Apparently he's got over 400. He must have a very big garden. He is a legend and should be given the OBE.
