Hello Just came across this site by chance. I went to Bransty school and then Richmond. I left Whitehaven a while ago, I am now living in Southern Spain, couldnt stand the cold any more. It was nice to read all your comments. I remember Hyams, and the Empress, they even had Saturday afternoon dances with n o alcohol. I lived on Haig Avenue, Bransty. I am researching my family tree and wondered if any one knows of any Gleaves families still living in the area? My GG Grand parents were Joseph Gleaves (1826-1889) and Mary Gleaves nee Brown (1834-1892) issues Dinah ann,Joseph,william,John,Thomas and Mary. they lived at the following address' 32 Prospect Row, 1 Palmer Ct and 3 Palmer Ct I wonder if these houses are still standing? William,Jose ph and Dinah died young. Daughter Mary married Robert Stewart my g grandparents. I have traced son John's family line but cannot find out what happened to Thomas born 1869. About 7-8 years ago I was working at Sellafield and during this time I was staying in Egremont. I used to drink in the Black Bull and got friendly with Emma who ran the bar and also Kerry who worked and stayed there, i'm sure Kerry was from Whitehaven and would now be ages between 28-32. Hi, I am not sure if I have been pinpointed to the right place but i am trying to find some info on my stepfather's mother, her name was/is Greta Edmondson born about March 1909, we think in the Barow-in-furness area of Cumbria/Lancashire, she married a Harold Whittall and they had two children, a boy & a girl, the boy is my stepfather also called Harold, well Greta & Harold divorced when m y stepfather was 4 years old, he & his sister was brought up by their father Harold and an aunt, and they never saw or heard from their mother Greta again, my stepfather is in his 70's now and obviously realises that his mother may no longer be around, but he really would like to try to fill in some of the empty gaps, he wants to know what become of her over the years, she may even have married again, he thinks that she may have moved to the London area, possibly had more children, if anybody can help to fill in some of the missing years of Greta Edomdson for her son, it would be wonderful.
