Cheap Food in Winchester, Hampshire*

Corner eateries, quick bites and the local chippy

You can tell us more about Winchester.

Cheap Food
  • Reeve's bakery in the High Street - good stuff. Cellar Peking on Jewry Street - very good and operates an 'all you can eat' policy for approx £20 / person.
  • Sep 09 - Balaka in Weeke (20 mins walk from town) does lovely Indian - portions are big so if its a take out don't order that extra dish just in case as you wont need it.
  • AVOID CHARLIES BY THE WESTGATE BUSTED FOR POOR AND HYGENE AND KITCHEN FULL OF ILLEGAL CHEFS (BUT THERY'RE JUST MY FAMILY VISITING ON HOLIDAY M'LUD) JOLLY FARMER- GIANT PLATE 2 FOR £8 UTTER CRAP FOOD, THE ANIMALS ARE FED BETTER AT MARWELL
  • chinese takeaway up by the train station, big portion of special fried rice for £3 ish, fed 2 of us!
  • EARL OF SANDWICH
  • Pickards by the train station. You can buy a litre of happy shopper cola for 39p!
  • Greggs!!! Near the bottom of the hisg st, good cheap food, popular with students!
  • winchester kebab house, not perticularly cheap but bloody amazing
  • Pizza hut's all you can eat . . . . .aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
  • Health Food Shop on Jewry Street. Does homemade sort of stuff. Nice but maybe a bit 'carob-heavy' if you know what I mean.
  • I notice that there is no mention of the Balaka indian restaurant in winchester.I must that I my self ia an indian and Iam a regular. I have tried all the other in town and i found balaka to be the all round. must be included.
  • Loch Fyne restaurant in Jewry Street has the most wonderful fresh, juicy fish and shellfish. You can also buy it straight from the cold counter to take away. It is the best meal I have had in a long while and just what Winchester needs.
  • slug and lettuce has THE nicest atmosphere, and the nicest food (chips and chicken ceaser recommended). Surprisingly not that expensice, modern and smokers welcome, with non-smoking upstairs. If you go check out the loos, their nice too!
  • I knew the old Pappagallo's but it has just had a MAJOR refurbishment, knocked down the wall and extended next door to create a bar area so now i can go there for just a drink if i want to, but the food was great last time i was there too.I thought it had created i health spa inside and then realised the sauna look-a-like was the toilets!
  • I seem to notice that no one ever said anything about the slightly nicer restaurants in Winchester. Fine, I used to be in the college, but I roller-blade (or at least I once did), so I think I might qualify to speak here. Someone mentioned the Gurkha Chef, so I thought I would say something about the Loch Fyne Fish restaurant on Jewry street. Nice, rustic decor, brilliant mussels in white wine sauce, pan fried salmon and seared tuna. Loch Fyne was also recommended by Rick Stein (its a chain). Price range is around that of the Gurkha Chef, so you might want to be slightly well stocked before you go in there. It also tends to get very busy on weekends, so make sure you book ahead. Two other very excellent venues for fine dining, is the Hotel du Vin and the Old Refectory (someone help me with the street names). Two of my housemates each had an 18th birthday party in each, and the service, the class of the place, the food, the wine, everything, is nothing short of fantastic. I think they might be a three or four stars (I would certainly rate them so). Apparently, people from London travel down to Winchester for them. Reservations necessary. Prices? Well... the food is the best Winchester has to offer, so...
  • Gregs oh yea Greggs.
  • I'm sorry, but when very drunk...or...influenced by other means, Missisipi is the ideal place for the munchies or general snacks. Closes early (at 11pm) but serves chinese/kfc stylie food for reasonable prices, usually cooked freshly and is very very nice. Say Ni How (KNee How, chinese for Hello) to the servers, and you'll go down very well with everyone, and may, if your lucky, get a free little something if you dish out more charm. Winch is slowly turning into a stereotypical Italian place...well, when I say slowly, I mean as slow as dog who's just had three legs chopped off. There are now 5 pizza/italian stylie places, but all are clean, and very very yummy. McDonalds of course, but not Burger King or KFC. However, McD's is very clean, but closes early.
  • Chinese (restaurants) - good but 'spenny Cellar Peking, good but also 'spenny and small Mr So, pretty good but tiny Golden something (on Sussex St - avoid Sundays, think college kids and allowances) Eagerly awaited - Rejuvenated Charles House on site of old Cafe Rouge. Chinese (takeaways) all vile except Garbett Rd and Harestock. Special mentions for 'Wonderful' and the one on North Walls for being particularly crap. Indian (restaurants) V.good Ghandhi, good Shuel's and Parash
  • Pizza Hut do a £5.99 all you can eat lunchtime buffet which is good early in the week...you have to fight for that one peice of pizza on a Thursday/Friday lunchtime.
  • Dil Se Indian Restaraunt, 8, St. Georges St My partner and I spent a weekend in Winchester and ate in this restaurant on the Saturday night. While the food was excellent, the service was dreadful. We were given no wine bucket for the white wine. The table was too small for the food and there were two big birthday parties going on. We were squashed into a little space and every time somebody got up to go somwhere they were sitting on our table. We ended up leaving the food and complained but the waiters didn't care. We woudl NEVER go back there again.
  • Reeves and Presto, creating Saturday jobs and hangover muchie cures for everyone
  • go to the Wonderful Chinese near Pizza Express. its not just a clever name.
  • The new chicken place on Jewry street kicks Ass
  • not strictly in town but in the suburban area, there's an indian restaurant called balaka; pretty good value for money and the food is great. In the center of town near the guildhall is gandhi's, another indian restaurant, again great food. There's a fish and chip shop near the guildhall too. Outside the brook's center near maccy d's there's a guy who sells footlongs in french sticks (i recommend the chilli sauce)
  • loads of nice resteraunts up around the library and along that road. One thing winchester is not short of is indian and chinese takeaways, most of them are very good, a particularly reccomend the 'Lucky Dragon' in weeke for chines takeway, 'Seafare' fish and chip ( I used to work there) also in weeke, and the Ghandi indian takeaway by the bus station.
  • The Gurkha Chef in City Road - sublime, the dog's doodahs. Can be very busy so you need to check in case you have to book.
  • Suhels Balti house on St Georges St is pukka.Never tried Ghandi on the Broadway, nasty urban myths concerning things found in their curries put me off, true or untrue,I'll give that one a miss.Davinci's on Jewry St is a nice Italian, has less on the menu than Papagallo's in City Rd but the food makes up for the limited choice & both restaurants are nice.Palash Indian restaurant on Parchment St is fairly small & away from the main part so ideal for anyone wanting a quieter meal. The Plaice chippy in Harestock is the best chippy in Winchester.
  • Mc Donalds -nowhere else comes close - allthough bad / slow service
  • Fatty Arbuckles has closed down now, but in it's place is a restaurant called Alcatraz. It does pasta and stuff but I've never been there so I don't know what it's like.
  • The Blue Dolphin - excellent chips, Kebab house on Stockbridge road - nice chips, Macdonalds, Pizza Hut, Bhs sandwiches, cafe in the upstairs part of the Antiques Market.
  • lauras restaurant on city road, everything home made by laura herself, excellent breakfasts good coffee interesting decor
  • I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Fatty Arbuckles' on Jewry Street. Fantastic food and a great value American diner!
  • Richoux's has buggered off and taken their wardrobe with them. The building's become an Ask Pizza & Pasta place, which is pretty good.
