The Worst Things in Wivenhoe, Essex*

The entirely missable and worth mentioning because of it

You can tell us more about Wivenhoe.

The Worst Things
  • I added the first comment (about the beige estates etc.) - but the fact it turned out that I was suspected by members of the Greyhound lounge bar circle of adding derogatory comments about them was a little bit on the crazy side. The divide between the bottom of Wivenhoe and the top is just plain silly and lazy. I can walk down the hill and back up - why not vice versa?
  • The people who live in the Dry Dock who keep calling the law whenever anyone skates there. Avoid at all costs unless you want your collar felt.
  • the peoples distinct crazieness
  • THERES NO SKATE PARK
  • Hi - update from Hazel here - just for anyone who wants to discuss me in the Greyhound - I did not make the comments about BoHo alcoholics etc. My comment was about the beige houses and very dull indeed. Sorry to disappoint y'all.
  • Pseudo-intellectual, self appointed guardians of all they want Wivenhoe to be, but actually achieve let alone get involved with anything, generally on the basis that they would be dragged into 'one of those dreadful pub cliques'. Come on guys, ALL the pubs and the people that attend them contribute to the social structure of Wivenhoe, admittedy to greater or lesser degrees.
  • The estate going to replace the shipyard
  • There is no skatepark we need one badly!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Agreed with the person who wrote about the thugs who think they run the place.. they've now switched to the Greyhound public bar and tend to bully people on their own in there. There's a ridiculous "US and Them" going on between the wannabe BoHo alcoholics who clique out the lounge bar and the often underage crowd of bullies in the public bar. Both are equally snooty and ridiculous - and neither side ever does anything constructive. Thank God for real pubs like the Horse & Gloom
  • The gang of thugs who hang out in either the flag or the station pubs and like to pretend they run the place just because they're brave enough to gang up on one person walking home late at night and give them a good kicking (they've done this several times). They don't even play in Colchester because they know they would get beaten, and are making people's life a general misery. You're boring. Stop.
  • Juvenile comments from pseudo bohemian bar flies who seem to think that their arrogant small minority view represents the 8000 normal people who live in wivenhoe and have to work for a living. If the former spent less time criticising and more getting involved they would have more fun. Fortunately most of the original locals now live "upstreet" and that is where things get done!!
  • The top of Wivenhoe. A South and North divide exists. People who reside in the more picturesque lower Wivenhoe are a mix of hedonistic creative intelectuals(middle class hippies)unlike those who live at the top of the village who wear reebok trainers and like to drink at their local pub The Flag after a days work at the factory. The Black Bouy Pub has to be the place to go if you like an empty pub, expensive beer, and awful service. Worried about having such a great time that you wont want to leave the pub? No fear of that at the 'Bouy'. Rick the friendly landlord will open all the windows in the middle of Winter and turn the lights up nice and bright (your retinas will burn) to remind you that it is one minute past Eleven. Better drink up quick though or your pint will be confascated as lights are turned out and so will you.
  • The permed kappa-slappas. you have nothing to do? why not start a fanzine? form a band? set up a website? or maybe do your homework....
  • The way it's being remarketed and rebuilt - I liked the mess but everything seemd to now be getting knocked down to create "nice" beige houses. The way people from the top end are isolated, and the kids have nothing to do - so they can run amok. The tendancy for entrophy to set in... Expensive rent means people who grow up here end up moving to Colchester.
