  • The pubs. I lived in York for 21 years and I still haven't visited them all. There is actually a pub for every day of the year, and then some.
  • every thing compared to melksham in wilts now thats one sh*t hole, moved her 12 months ago wht a mistake!
  • a warm day, people relaxing on spots of grass around the city
  • loads of stuff to do
  • How beautiful our city is!
  • Shiva - a really interesting shop full of all sorts of gifts such as leather journals and some wonderful fashion and silver jewellery from around the world
  • The talent.
  • Punks, goths, skaters etc. quite a good alternative scene.
  • Can walk or push bike everywhere, Lots of samll shops. A large village.
  • The museums, city walls and the real ale pubs.
  • Coney Street
  • Coney Street
  • The Comedy Club. Cheap and fun and always a good laugh.
  • mayhem
  • loadza kool skaters and greebos who know how to have fun, know where to hang and know the best dealers in yorkshire!
  • Can I put a word in for Tang Hall? My granda & granny lived there & I have fond memories of sitting outside the WMC with the other urchins occasionally being thrown bottles of pop and bags of crisps. It's gone to the dogs a bit since (the early 80s) admittedly but don't be so middle-class bratty, OK? There's worse. There really is.
  • York has potential.Right now the night life is shit beyond compare.I've ran clubs in chicago and new york and I know York has the potential to have superclubs and a buzzing nightlife. All we need is people to get together and petition the assholes that are York City Council and let us open up up some superclubs.Give me a chance and I will revolutionise Yorks nightlife.York University also needs a big Student Union venues.PHONE YORK UNIVERSITY AND DEMAND THEY BUILD A CENTRAL STUDENTS UNION VENUE.YORK UNI NEEDS TO WORK WITH YORK ST JOHN'S STUDENTS.
  • Its a city which still has its own identity and hasn't been overly standardised by the best efforts of corporate UK
  • easy to get about in, i lived there for 17 years, i jbew practically every street. i've walked across york in just over an hour a few times. I think i miss the trees, and the general viriditude (greenness) of the place.
  • the girls (especially the rich ones)
  • Minster
  • Shag loads of clothes shops. You can get absaloutley anything.
  • ST JOHNS COLLEGE, ESPECIALLY THE RUGBY CLUB!
  • River walks, the pubs, architecture, the pubs...
  • Haxby! we rule! not being modest of owt!
  • york is cool coz it has enough stuff to do without being an'orrible big city like sheffield
  • St Johns Lions RUFC - the best team in the land, best socials, best lads, best everything. Apparently their social secs a bit of a sex god!
  • Pubs - lots of 'em, and good ones too.
  • 'Cheese to Please' at Cross Keys on a friday night.just so good. The Evil Eye.The plethora of ningers(at least you know if you get desperate you can pull someone)
  • The history and achitecture and friendly northern feel(i am writing this from southampton!)
  • St Johns Lions RUFC, the best team in the land, also best socials and tours etc. They also have a devilishly handsom social sec!
  • NOTHING IN YORK
  • Some totally cute skaters around
  • Drunken teenagers meet up on a friday night to persue a peaceful drinking session.
  • Absolutely everything! Moved up from South Africa and love this place like no other (except maybe some spots at home) I feel so at home and everyone's friendly and the pubs are great - try the Maltings - a place not to miss
  • Simply the largest village in Britain, well small town - small population of locals with masses to do because the city copes for so many visitors.
  • theres this guy who wanders around york either in a bob marley hoodie or a fighting irish top and all the kids seem to know him. No1 knows his real name but every1 seems to call him G. Whatever his name is the guy seems to be very wise and knoweldgeable so i'd look for him if u need any info
  • Its really a very friendly city. I enjoy that friendly northern rudeness which has a likeable edge and doesn't really imply dislike. its just a test of character!
  • feel good atmosphere+ freindly faces
  • The 2nd best university (Daily Telegraph) in the U.K.
  • The architecture, pubs, people.
  • South Bank If you are moving to York, the best area is South Bank, which is near to Rowntree's Park, the new Millenium Bridge also close to the Racecourse (the Knavesmire) and the A64 and motorways. You can walk to the Railway Station and Town. Good schools, and walking distance to the River Ouse and greenbelt area. The property's are a little expensive. but worth it. Best of luck
  • It's not Leeds.
  • The history
  • The city is pedestrianised so you don't have to worry about getting run over as much.....(damn I'm trying!!!)
  • Lots of cool places to sit around in the city and watch people. Behind some of the ruins in Museum gardens - very peaceful and not too many tourists at times surprisingly.
  • The beer.
  • The footpath/cycleway along the river through Fishergate. Can't be a better way of avoiding traffic and getting into the heart of the city.
  • The lack of cars in the city centre, which makes it great for relaxing without fearing for your life. If your a car driver who doesn't like this then get on your bike. During the summer chill out on the green at the back of the minster.
  • York is Britain's number one cycling city with 20% of Commuter Journeys made by cycle. The City Council is leading the way in the UK on traffic calming, cycling facilities and Green Transport initiatives. Other Councils look to York for examples of best practice in these areas.
  • Coppergate and the friendly pubs along the river. My husband & I (Americans) went off season and loved the friendly people, pubs, and York Minister. If we had started our trip here instead of Portsmouth, we would never had left England. Everyone we met were wonderful; we look forward to renewing our friendships.
  • The city is beautiful, I feel privileged to live here!
  • Twelve screen Warner Bros cinema on the Clifton Moor industrial estate.
  • Very attractive city, mediaeval walls/castle, museums and art gallery.
  • Within easy reach of Leeds/Bradford conurbation and the NE coast Scarborough/Whitby.
  • 20 minutes drive to North Yorkshire Moors or the Dales.
  • Excellent train station, direct to Leeds/London/Edinburgh.
  • Brilliant shopping, with all the large chains and pedestrian city centre.
  • Most of the city centre is pedestianized
  • YORK is the home of KIT KAT!!! Lots of other sweetie goodies are made here - All by Nestle - Come smell the air: one day POLO mints, the next day it could be Aero!
  • Purpose built baby changing areas in City centre
  • 366 (at last count) pubs inside city walls.
  • What about Guy Fawkes (born in York) the only person to enter parliament with honourable intention (to paraphrase Dennis Skinner, MP)!! Where was Guy when Thatch the Snatch was ripping the shit out of Health, Education, Local Government, Employment and stock-piling arms for the bloody Yanks?
  • Tourists or non-tourists should check out the "Guide Friday" bus tour system for getting around the city. One price for a full-day ticket gets you unlimited on/off transport around and about the city centre, both inside and outside the walls. The route stops at all of the main places - train station, tourist spots, race track, as well as having regular bus stops. Definitely the best way to navigate the city. Have used GF in other UK cities, and definitely the best organised and most friendly help. Other city GF hype for tips and pitch the other GF tours, York did not. It is a beautiful and clean city, and tourists or not, the "regular folk" are warm, funny and the best of the British. If you think that you would like to have "tea" as an event, Betty's is good, but expensive and crowded during the summer months. Sunday evening, as supper, was very bearable.
  • Depth Charge, The Wellington pub (back street off Fulford Road opposite the police station), the 17.37 transpennine service to Manchester.
