  • I have lived in York all of my life (I'm 21) and I am proud to be from York. Like anywhere else there are areas that you wouldn't want to walk alone at night (or day!!), but there are also areas that are quite nice. I personally feel safe walking through town at night on my own which is more than can be said for a lot of other places. There's bound to be small minded little idiots who don't have a polite or decent bone in their body that give York a bad name. Unfortunately there are people like this whereever you go. As for people who generalise and say that people from York are all unfriendly etc, you obviously attract the wrong types, as I know a lot of decent people who live in and are from York.

  • Come to York!!!! It's one of the best places in the world without a doubt - though the clubs could be vastly improved on.
  • Pizza Plus, Hull Road. This is an advertisement.
  • You mauy like to update the info on the York Book Fair (now Europe's kargest annual ecent of this kind). Dates for 2001 are 14-15 September, and it has its own web-site www.yorkbookfair.com Also Ken Spelman address now www.kenspelman.com. Loads of changes since you last looked (please knock out the bit about CD's) Generally reckoned (by other booksellers) to have the most attractive street-wise staff of any bookshop in the UK - they just don't look like booksellers! Some regulars come in to over-hear the latest gossip, not buy the books! Website recently described as a "treausre-trove" by The Times last month.
  • I am saddened to read all the derogatory things which are being said about Tang Hall,I was brought up in Alcuin Avenue in the 50s, it was a lovely place to live at the time,it was friendly and clean and people looked out for each other. I hear that it is a no go area now,it makes me sad.does anyone remember Mary Godson(my gran) who lived at no 99?
  • If a man comes up to you giving you some shpeel about missing his girlfriends birthday and being homeless, look out for his mobile phone and cd walkman.
  • Im from Barnsley but am at RYSY college, in the few months I have live here i've decieded I like the place but how can it be the capital of Yorkshire over Tarn, with the boring accents and even most of the tellys here get Tyne Tees, whats that about? Also there are no good clubs and the lasses arent total slags like they are at home, but apart from all that its ok i reckon
  • To be honest, I'm glad I don't live there anymore.
  • The generally upbeat comments are rather spoilt by one or two contributors who seem to be a bit chippy. I think one can ignore the "Kevins" (whose assessment of anywhere is limited to whether they liked the last club they visited) but I would take issue with the denigration of York people or the suggestion that the city is unsafe at night. I visit York regularly, I love it and I wander about at all hours. I have never seen any serious bother. The American tourists are no trouble either!
  • If you are looking for an excuse to dress up, dance like Jenifer Lopez or Ricky Martin, make a puppet or watch a Parade - you need to find out more about York Carnival on 2 July - 01904 552013 for information.
  • Visit the York dungeon and prepare to be scared, and laugh at the actors that work there. Forever Changes is a groovy shop selling many things, including clothes, candles, bongs, and inflatable sheep. The staff have interesting hair colours and multiple body piercings. Go there.
  • I was in York 10 years ago and its a beautiful city that I would recommend to anyone. And I found the people to be very friendly to us "bloody Yanks", especially the couple who ran the B&B. Don't be discouraged by other comments here. We plan to return for a visit next year. You haven't seen unfriendly until you've visited Quebec City!
  • I lived in York from 1992-1998 and now I am back down South. I can honestly say that I wish I was back there. Lots of memories. I visited last week to visit the only 'decent pub in the UK' - The Maltings. Great beer, good cheap food. Do not include this pub in a pub crawl - you won't leave it once you get in!!! Now let me think - Harlow or York ummm difficult decision that one!!!
  • York is one of the major centres for old and rare books in the UK, with around sixteen dealers within the city. It will also be hosting the largest Antiquarian and Rare Book Fair ever held in the UK, at the Barbican Centre on 20 - 21st September 1996. You might like to note Ken Spelman (booksellers) are on the web, probably the only web site with a real coal fire! We now offer a direct on-line link to ordering and listening to music cd's
  • Being British and very proud of it, it so very disappointing to read the type of inaccurate subjective crap contained in some of the information on York. Obviously written by a native Yorkite, with their traditional massive chip on their shoulder, it reflects their far too often unfriendliness.
  • The bit of self praise "'regular folk' are warm, funny and the best of the British" is contradictory to the unfriendly tone of their preceding verbiage. At the end of the day, Yorkies aren't even close to the real Yorkshire people, as in the surrounding areas, i.e. the West Riding and so on. Having lived in York for years and in the USA, I can without any doubt that the so called "Bloody Yanks" are infinitely warmer and more hospitable than the vast majority of York natives, who spend a good part of their week forcing a gallon of ale down their necks only to puke it up in the back of taxis or in the fountains in Exhibition Square.
This is of cause a generalisation and I know some nice Yorkites, but on average they are far from friendly in comparison to other areas of Britain. Thank goodness there has been a good influx of people from other parts of the country, importing a little open mindedness and class.
For the person who wrote this I would suggest a little education in the form of travel would not go amiss. Fortunately the City of York is a beautiful place, the surrounding country side has variety and apart from being damp an cold in the vale during in the winter, it is exceptional. But there are many beautiful places around the world and while it is great to feel proud of one's home, it is well to remember that the type of tone and poor manners as is in the York site does nothing for the City.
  • As a Yorkshireman who has travelled the World and resides in the US I was horrified to read from the whining individual who condemns all tourists and Yanks in particular.
York has always attracted visitors throughout its history. From the Romans (not so welcome) to the Vikings (not too popular either) and now the waves of (God forbid! - Yanks).
I would second the opinion that most of the Americans that I have come into contact with are infinitely more friendly than many of the Brits it was my misfortune to meet.
I guess there are still plenty of Luddites around like the one who wrote much of the material for the City of York Knowhere Guide. It is unfortunate that people read junk like that from what should be an informative site and I too would strongly suggest that travel might broaden what for want of a better word I would describe as a mind!
  • As an American that is in love with the city of York, I can attest to how horrible all the American tourists are - they almost keep me away. I apologize, and am completely embarrassed.
  • I moved to York last year and find most locals really friendly - just a bit undemonstrative that's all.
