Chorleywood 1940s by Mike Durbin (Member 177371) on 2-Mar-08
Hi, I lived in Chorleywood from 1943 until 1969 and have been trying to find old photos to send to friends I grew up with who are now in America and Australia. The Main Parade area before the new shops and Grenville Court were built would be of great interest. Does anyone know if there is a local historical society I could contact re this ? Many thanks and kind regards to all Chorleywooders, Mike Durbin

What a great idea. Its only £39 a share so I have taken a punt. I've signed up and with a few like minded people we could do it. Being able to buy and manage our own team and pick the team every week and watch our dreams come true sounds great to me.

Field next to St. Anthony Stag Lane by Sue Littlejohn (Member 218760) on 30-Jan-07
Does anyone know who owns the land which runs along the bottom of the gardens, including St. Anthonys, Stag Lane? When the house was built, by my grandfather, and named for my father, Anthony, in the early 1930's, this field formed part of the large grounds. Later, several other houses were built to each side of St.. Antony, again, on land that used to be garden. Any information would be most helpful. Many thanks. Sue Littlejohn

Sue, I have been contacted by Matt Keen who says he lives in the house now and would like you to contact him. If you want to contact me at chickenlittle92071@yahoo.com I'll give you his email address. He says he is having a problem registering or posting. Jim who stayed in the Chorleywood Hotel in 1959.

The Swillet by George Davis (Member 193585) on 29-Dec-06
I lived in Chorleywood from 1964 to 1965, a six year old American who went to St. Peter's Primary. My mother would take me to a Canadian barber who'd buzz me good: as the sixties progressed and hair got longer, mine got shorter. It seemed this guy's shop was in a small row, including a butcher's, which was called The Swillet. Does anyone know if The Swillet still exists, and why it is so named? Thank you.

  • Re: The Swillet by Ian Mills (Member 159902) on 16-Jan-07
I come to this site about once every year to check if I might know anyone. While you were going to St Peter's, I was going to Ricky Grammar. My name is Ian Mills and if you look down the list you may see my previous blurb. I was born in 1947 and lived in chorleywood until I was 18. I know the Swillet well, I went to the Swillet primary school. I was last there about 18 months ago and >>more

  • Re: The Swillet by George Davis (Member 193585) on 17-Jan-07
Thank you for your response Ian. My two older brothers don't remember The Swillet at all, which made me think that it was some Brigadoon-like village that I had imagined! I live in San Francisco now, and haven't been back to Rickmansworth or Chorleywood since 1970. Best regards.

  • Re: The Swillet by Gregory Heath (Member 221813) on 27-Mar-07
The Swillett Butchers shop took it's name from the local area still known as The Swillett. The shop bcame a house many years ago but still retained the metal rail outside above the windows where the meet would hang on hooks. Unfortunately only in this last year the building is no longer and has been replaced by modern housing. The name Swillett is probally Old English and means a depression with water flowing. Across the road from the shop and about >>more

  • Re: The Swillet by George Davis (Member 193585) on 30-Mar-07
Thank you Gregory for the information. As you define it, swillet is much more pleasant than the image it has always conjured up for me: a container of swill. I never saw the actual swillet. It's great that it still exists in one form. Thanks again.

Alabama House, Chenies Road, Chorleywood by Peter Gravestock (Member 172990) on 10-Jun-05
Please, can someone tell me what became of "Alabama" house up on Chenies Rd.? Suspect now it's a continuation of Rickmansworth Rd.

  • Re: Alabama House, Chenies Road, Chorleywood by Peter Gravestock (Member 172990) on 10-Jun-05
House was opposite from Chorleywood House.

  • Re: Alabama House, Chenies Road, Chorleywood by George Davis (Member 193585) on 8-Feb-06
I lived in Alabama House from August 1964 to August 1965. My dad rented it; it came with a gardener, Jock, who once served The Queen, and a black rabbitt named Charlie. We were Americans from New York, and it was quite unusual for northern Yankees to live in a southern mansion in England.

  • Re: Alabama House, Chenies Road, Chorleywood by George Davis (Member 193585) on 10-Feb-06
I must have seen Chorleywood House, but do not rememember it (I was six years old.) What was/is Chorleywood House? Thank you.

Hi George, My mother was born at Chorleywood Bottom 1939, and many other family members lived there included my grandparents and greatgrandparent. I have been looking at my family tree and some of my ancestors were in service at Chorleywood House. The present Chorleywood House was built in 1898 by Lady Ela Russell who had bought the original Georgian house in 1892. She converted this into a modern Victorian mansion and it was during her ownership that the grounds were laid >>more

Thank you Sharon for the information. Since I posted that question I've talked to my family and now vaguely remember Chorleywood House. I lived at Alabama House for a year, then in Rickmansworth for five years, from 1964 to 1970. I was five when we moved to England. I remember going to several fetes in and/or around Chorleywood House, and at least one Donkey Derby. My dad would take my brother and I fishing in The River Chess, and it >>more

George, I have just returned to this site after too long of an absence. I have many wonderful boyhood memories of exactly what you describe. Most every weekday in the summer holidays, me and my mates would walk across the common, through chorleywood House grounds and down to the river Chess where we would go swimming. A short walk upstream to the bridge to a deep part we called the whirlpool where you might catch a pike. I am going back >>more

Ian That's great you're going back for your Mum's birthday. I think once or twice my dad or brother caught a fish in The Chess, but I never did. We never went swimming, but I do remember drinking the water: it tasted good. Have a good time in England. Regards, George

Hi George, I took that trip down memory lane last October and it was wonderful. I parked at the cemetary and walked down the path and through the woods to the river Chess. I had a passer-by take my picture for me on the old bridge. Then i walked up to the water works, to the bridge that we used to call the whirlpool. That is where we could catch pike or trout. It was a great afternoon, just me and >>more

Hello Ian I'm glad you had a pleasant journey. Walking to the river, we'd climb over a stile, the only one I've seen. Did you see if it was still there? Was the water still clear? Regards, George

Did you know Albert Charles HOLLOWAY and his wife Helen (Knight) and their children Brian and June? by Sharon Knight (Member 145977) on 27-Jul-04
I would like to here from anyone who knew of the Holloway/Knight family who lived at 14 Chorleywood Bottom. My mother June was born here in 1939 and attended Watford Girls Grammar school. Her father, Albert (b. 11 July 1908 - Chenies, Bucks) 'Bert' was a shoemaker/repairer and her mother Helen (b. 20 September 1908 - Shrewsbury Shropshire) was a parlour maid at Chorleywood House. Helen died at home in 1961, and I believe Albert remarried and moved to Eastbourne. I >>more

Hi, My name is Ian Mills and I now live in the USA. I was born in Chorleywood and I have many memories as a boy of taking my shoes and those of my family to Mr. Holloway to sole and heel. His workshop was in his garage by the side of the house and the smell of leather was wonderful. This won't help you very much in your research, but I was tickled to find out that here was a >>more

Dear Ian, I have only just seen your message. Do you remember the shoe repairers daughter or son,I guess they would have been much older than you born 1939 and 1935 respectively. There would however have been 3 years or so between my Mother and your sister. My Auntie Eileen Turnball grew up in Chorleywood and I believed lived in Quickley Lane. I'd like to hear your Chorleywood rememberances and will try and e-mail when I have more time.

Hi Sharon, I need to look at this site more often. When I read your note, I was intrigued by the fact that you knew my sister's year of birth, but I don't remember mentioning that. Did you know my sister, Freda? I am sure I know the name, Eileen Turnbull, but I cannot put a face with it. Anyway, my sister has a much better memory than me, so if you want to drop her a line direct, her e-mail >>more

Dear Ian, lovely to have another message from you. I am afraid my knowledge of your sister's DOB and name was nothing more than basic detective work - you mentioned this in response to a message left by Tony Barton in December! I will contact Freda upon your suggestion though, thank you. I visited Chorleywood in June, on the day of my Mum's birthday it's really very beautiful and I know my Mum had been happy as a child there. I >>more
