The English Language & The EU
|
by Brian John Howarth (Member 10088275) on 11-Jun-2008
|
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English'.
In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.
The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent 'e' in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' with 'z' and 'w' with 'v'.
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou' and after ziz fifz yer , ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.
If zis mad you smil, pas on to oza pepl.

by Phillip (Member 10227299) on 8-Jun-2008

Its hard to make contact and sometimes you just feel you are sending endless mail upon mail and still hitting your head against a brick wall?
Successful Sex Networking is the solution!
(Plus real life stories!)
There is a new book on the market that blows wide open why these kinds of advertisements and email replies dont work. It also explains the frustration of why there are thousands of swingers looking for males but cant find them. Its written by swingers with 40 years experience of the scene well before computers were invented and no emails. Yet they have a had a successful swinging career. The author believes thats whats wrong now, because guys believe the Internet is the best and ONLY way? Many guys under the age of 35 years simply know no other way?
THEY DONT DO SPAM! So if you wish to have the link to view the details of the book you must HIT THE REPLY button to this mail (no need to write anything) Then you will receive a link to view the details.
It is NOT a membership fee site. So just take a look whoever you are and whatever type of sex contacts you wish to connect with. Females? Couples? Males? TS? TV? It applies to all.

Whatever way I wish you the best of luck in your swinging fun! ... more >>

Yes the deer are certainly here. They are being spotted all over so must be on the increase. They have even been seen on a school playing field. Only last week there were 2 roe deer in my next door neighbours garden at 7 in the morning. Herons fly over twice a day. We have a large contingent of goldfinches. Shrews living in the wall.Foxes & owls & regularly see buzzards going up on a thermal & we have a sparrowhawk that keeps the pigeons down. here are still some pheasants knocking about from the old phesantry at Giants Seat. ... more >>

Hi all not been on here for ages!!!
Wildlife update: seen loads of deer recently, seems the population is growing, saw one last week about 2 in the afternoon trotting down the middle of Prestolee road. also seen loads of hares in the fields either side of Prestolee road, Shirley have you been down there yet and seen any? i believe you were talking to a nephew of mine the other week, Thomas Wheeler?
best wildlife spot of the year so far for me though, about two months ago, i saw a white pheasant near Giants Seat garden centre, must be an albino but i bet they are pretty rare. ... more >>

Hi Rhys, Tom is working on my shift so eventually the penny dropped that he was your nephew. No , we have not been upto prestolee road apart from dropping in at Dave Bents for rabbit food but would love to see the hares. I have yet to see one. We are on hols from tomorrow morning so hopefully will have the chance. Talking of deer there were two stood in my neighbours garden only last week, he got pics of them. The albino pheasant is a good sighting if it doen't get eaten by something. We have been seeing the buzzards up on the thermals since this nice weather arrived. My sister told me that there are two black swans on Crompton Lodges also at the moment. ... more >>

A young couple wanted to join the church, the pastor told them, 'We have a special requirement for new member couples. You must abstain from sex for one whole month.'
The couple agreed, but after two-and-a-half weeks returned to the Church.
When the Pastor ushered them into his office, the wife was crying
And the husband was obviously very depressed. 'You are back so soon...
Is there a problem?' the pastor inquired.
'We are terribly ashamed to admit that we did not manage to abstain
From sex for the required month.' The young man replied sadly.
The pastor asked him what happened.
'Well, the first week was difficult... However, we managed to abstain through sheer willpower. The second week was terrible, but with the use of prayer, we managed to abstain. However, the third week was unbearable. We tried cold showers, Prayer, reading from the Bible...anything to keep our minds off Carnal Thoughts. One afternoon my wife reached for a can of paint and dropped it. When she bent over to pick it up, I was overcome with lust and I just had my way with her right then and there.
It was lustful, loud, passionate sex. It lasted for over an hour and when we were done we were both drenched in sweat,' admitted the man, shamefacedly.
The pastor lowered his head and said sternly, 'You understand this Means you will not be welcome in our church.'
'We know.' said the young man, hanging his head, 'We're not welcome at B and Q either.' ... more >>

The power of the wife
|
by Brian John Howarth (Member 10088275) on 26-Feb-2008
|
A man left work early one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he spent the weekend (and all his money) drinking and watching footie with the boys.
When he finally returned home on Sunday night, his wife really got on his case and stayed on it.
After a couple of hours of swearing and screaming, his wife paused and pointed at him and made him an offer.
"How would you like it if you didn't see me for a couple of days?!?"
The husband couldn't believe his luck, so he looked up, smiled and said,"That would suit me just fine!!"
Monday went by, and the man didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday went by and he still didn't see her.
Come Thursday, the swelling went down a bit and he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye. ... more >>

Numerous questions on Ringley
|
by Donna Stubbins (Member 10221592) on 19-Feb-2008
|
|
Does anyone know who lived at 132 church view in 1891 and 1901. Mary Agnes my great gran had this address on a certificate. My nan remembered it being a shop and making sandwiches and food for the men coming back from the mill. Unfortanately my nan is passed and only have my mum's word on it. Mary agnes had a child with Ralph Fish the elder (out of wedlock). She supposedly worked at The Grape s (dont know how true this is). She then Married Edmund Holding (holden) and ran the shop. Anybody any ideas on Ringley past? e-mail bwfc001@bigpond.net.au
Thank you

Re: Numerous questions on Ringley
by shirley ingham (Member 10106358) on 31-Mar-2008
In 1881 Ralph Fish born Stockport, Ches, was living in Prestolee Village,a coal miner aged 46 with his wife Betsy aged 45 born Great Lever & their sons Thomas 13 farm labourer,Ralph 9 & George 7.
In 1891 Ralph Fish (widower)age 54 born Stockport,Ches is living 138 Huld View ?,Outwood it is difficult to tell because of the writing.
This would have been located off Prestolee road & although overlooking Prestolee road the address would be classed as Outwood. All of them, were coal miners at this stage & all the sons were born in Kearsley. They also had a lodger called Mary Lightbown aged 67. She didn't work so possibly kept house for them.
In 1901 Thomas had moved out , married Sarah & were living at 120 Stoneclough road,Kearsley which is actually just across the bridge which connects Prestolee to the village of Stoneclough.
There is another way into Prestolee via Prestolee Road which is about 3 miles away up a hill near Shore Top but to get back down to the village you would have an extensive walk along a road akin to a 'packet trail' or you could access it by the Manchester,Bolton,Bury canal which although unused is still there today.
On the 1907 Alan Godfrey map for Stoneclough & Ringley the bridge is shown as the 'new bridge'.
At the end of the new bridge on the main road is 'The Grapes Hotel'.
Ralph jnr a 'coal hewer'is now married to Elizabeth & they have 3 children.John aged 6, George Frederick aged 2, & Sarah aged 2. They are living at 32 Crompton Terrace, Prestolee.Although the terrace is not shown on the map I would think this is on or just off Crompton road. Lots of these terraces used to be known by their names rather than the road on which they were located.Living with them as a boarder is Ralph's brother, George a coal miner.
I cannot find Ralph snr so presumably he died or moved out of the area.
FURTHER to the Fish Family. In the 1901 census Edmund Holding, machine minder in cotton mill aged 28 born in Chorley is living with his wife Mary Agnes aged 41 born Sheffield, Yorskshire. They are living at 20 Church View, Prestolee with their daughter Emily aged 6 born in Prestolee. living with them is Ralph & Lily Gerrard. Ralph is 13yrs old & Lily 21. They are both listed as domestic servants. Also living there is David Nutall aged 39 a boarder. He is also a machine minder at the mill so presumably Edmund worked with him.All those 3 people were born in Prestolee. This is not shown on the map but it is entered in the census next to Prestolee House & the Irwell Bank Mill. ... more >>

Re: Numerous questions on Ringley
by shirley ingham (Member 10106358) on 31-Mar-2008
P.S I could not find a 132 Church View as all the numbers in Prestolee were in the low numbers except for 132 Prospect Place,Prestolee. I can't find that on the 1907 map either but it is in the 1901 census. Prestolee is a small place even today but it was dominated by 2 big cotton mills,Kearsley Mill is still there today & Irwell Bank Mill which was much bigger was demolished in the 1970's or 80's. This was supposed to be haunte4d by 'the white lady'. There will be a 132 Market St, Stoneclough but that again is across the bridge. Ringley by the way is across the bridge & through the village of Stoneclough, although not far about a mile.Ringley's church is St Saviours, whilst Prestolee's is Holy Trinity. ... more >>

Posh and her driver are cruising along a country road one evening when a cow runs in front of the mercedes. The driver tries to avoid it but can't, and the cow is killed instantly.
All heart, Posh tell's her driver to go up to the farmhouse and explain to the owners what happened.
About an hour later, the driver staggers back to the car with his clothes in disarray. He is holding a bottle of whiskey in one hand, and a cigar in the other, and smilling very happily.
"What happened"? asked Posh.
"Well" the driver replies, "The farmer gave me this expensive whiskey, and his wife gave me this cigar, and their beatifull daughter made mad, passionate love to me.
"My God" says Posh. "What did you say to them"?
The driver replied "I SAID I WAS VICTORIA BECKHAM'S DRIVER, AND I JUST KILLED THE COW ... more >>

If Microsoft made cars
|
by Brian John Howarth (Member 10088275) on 29-Oct-2007
|
For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At COMDEX recently, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
10. Oh yeah, and last but not least . . . you'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off! ... more >>

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2007

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2007 when...
1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.
2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.
4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.
5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that
they don't have e-mail addresses.
6. You pull up in your own drive and use your mobile phone .
to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries
7 Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the
screen.
8. Leaving the house without your mobile phone, which you didn't have
the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.
10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.
11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )
12 You're reading this and nodding and laughing.
13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.
14. You are too busy to notice there was no number 9 on this list.
15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a number 9 on this list.
AND NOW YOU ARE LAUGHING at yourself. ... more >>
