Roseberry street gorton 1940's

It has been some time since I last posted a message on here. However I am hoping to find some information out about a family called Jones who lived at 43 Roseberry street from 1939. The electoral records show their names to be Sarah E. and George Jones. However I am unsure whether they had any children, but I do know a Lucy Jones appeared on the electoral records in 1947, so it could be that th ey did have a daughter. If anyone has any recolection of this family I would really appreciate any information. ... more >>

Hi Pauline. Sivori's - I remember it well. I used to virtually live in the place in the sixties, and remember Linda and Marie very well indeed: I am sure we must have met many times ourselves in there. It really is lovely to hear from you! Are you all still in Gorton? I moved down to London a lifetime ago, and have now retired to Cumbria. I shall be visiting Gorton round about November time and would love to buy you all a few drinks and chat over those heady days in Sivori's. Assuming, of course, that you are still actually in Gorton. I really look forward to hearing from you. And yes, the pies and gravy were delicious, as was the hot vimto. Kindest regards, David. ... more >>

Hi again, Pauline. Something has just come to mind: when I knew Linda and Marie in the sixties - this would be around 65/66-ish - your mum had just had a baby. Marie would have been around fourteen at the time, and I think Linda would have been around eighteen or nineteen. And I can remember Linda having a friend called Gloria. God - it all seems so very long ago, now!
Regards, David.

Hi David.
It was lovely to hear from someone who remembers "the old days"...I have not lived in gorton for many years, but Linda and marie are still there. Mum went on to have many babies..all of which live live in gorton..I think I was the only one to get away..I am living in Liverpool at the moment...for my sins..Thanks for your reply.
Best Regards Pauline

Hi, Pauline, and thank you for your lovely message: it was good to hear from you! Like me, you have escaped! I hope you are having a good and happy life in Liverpool, and that Marie and Linda are happy in Gorton. I'm going there towards December for a couple of days - probably nothing left of the Gorton I remember! Please ask Linda and Marie if they remember "Barry" from those days - that was my nickname all those years ago! I still remember Siv's delicious pies: meat, 10d, meat and potato,11d and steak and kidney, 1/- (REAL money, in those days - I hate this damned decimal currency!!). I think gravy was an extra penny, and vimto was 6d per glass! I love your sentiments "we met, married and loved there" - very true - wonderful sentimental heady days which I shall never forget. Kindest regards, and thank you so much for rekindling such happy memories! ... more >>

Re: Sivoris cafe
by David (Member 10230961) on 28-Aug-2008
Hello yet again, Pauline!! Re: your posting under "Spurley Hey" by Benji - that was actually my posting: apparently there are two Benjis on this board, so I changed over to my name, David, so as to avoid any possible confusion. Yes, I well remember you now (at Spurley from 1955-1960) and the people you mention. Do you remember the frightening Miss Hanley (needlework)? Although she never taught the boys, we all lived in mortal fear of that woman! She was one of the people I have certainly forgotten! And Mr. Thorpe, the headmaster, and Mr. Martindale, the previous head. I was in form 5A1 in 1960 (left in July) and was Head Boy - from which I can only conclude that the school must have been jolly desperate, as many others were better suited to the post! Forty-eight years ago - wow, how the years have flown! Regards, David. ... more >>

Hi David...Yes I remember miss Hanley..I left the same time as you 1960 July...but cant remember the class I was in...(my age)..I remember all boys quite liked Miss Warren PE, she could never control us girls, always in tears.
I loved Mr Martindale, his speeches to assembley were always the same"one bad apple turns the barrell bad"...Mr Thorpe scared me to death...old army I believe. So what is your full name, I may remember you....Regards Pauline ... more >>

WW 2 question

Someone mentioned to me that during the war the windows of his house were taped in a criss-cross pattern This was done to stop the panes of glass from shattering. I'm 71, I don't rememeber the windows at our hous in Rowsley Street having tape of them. Does anyone remember this?
Cheers,
Irene

Hi Sylvia, I used to shop at the Co-op for my Mam every Saturday on Wellington Street. I must have been strong child carrying those bags full of groceries all the way back to Rowsley Street < g > We watched the fireworks for free too. We'd sit on the wall outside Simpson's toy shop on Hyde Road.

Re: WW 2 question

Sylvia, I left Gorton in 1958 when I married. I did go back to Gorton and stayed with my dad in 1966 when my husband went to Vietnam. I was in England again in 1974, everyone from the old neighbourhood had moved.
Wasn't it Kidds in Cross Street? Sivoris had two shops on Hyde Road, one near Leon's the tailors. One near Belle Vue.I'm sure there's someone on this board will know.
Cheers! Irene

Hiya Harold. I agree Manmates is a good site. I will take a look. I was told it was against the law NOT to have one's windows taped during the war. When I said I didn't remember the tape, she "thought" I was lying, no, I said, it's just old age
BTW, I left a comment on the Victoria Road thread for you!
Cheers back at yer!

Sutton St - Kate Nowell
|
by Paul Hartley (Member 10226532) on 3-Jul-2008

Hi Kate, I see in your old messages that you use to live in Sutton St until 1965, do you remember a sweet shop further along Birch Street between Feltham St and Bridgend St? Can you remember a name for this shop? after seeing a photo of it on the Manchester Council Image Archives it's now bugging me, I only knew it as the Birch St toffee shop, there was also a wool shop and a grocers next to it. Part way down Bridgend St was Cowling St, as a kid in the early 60s this was a favourite play area. Because of the unusual 3ft rise at the other end of it onto a dirt croft surrounded by backs of houses and affectionately known by the local kids as Green Trees, I'd love to know how that name came about as there wasnt a tree in sight! We where one of the last families to move out of the area when the demolition began, and I remember a lot of those streets being down by the time we finally moved out in late 69. Looking from our old house in Coventry St back then, we could see open areas of land stretching from the Clowes St end of Belle Vue St,out over Bobbies Croft too Belle Vue. With the landmarks of the Blackwin St British Legion Club across to Lennardoes, the Pallentine and the Corona still standing, along with just the odd part row of terraced houses. In case your not aware Sutton St is now the area of land marked by the Fire station built off Birch St. ... more >>

by Kate Nowell (Member 10137684) on 4-Jul-2008
Hi Paul,
All that info brings back memories, it seems just like yesterday. I think the sweet shop was called Capper's, in fact I think I was one of it's best customers, two ounces of dolly mixures, two ounces of liquorice allsorts and a sherbet dip etc. The wool shop was called Hawksworths and the grocers shop was called Smith's (I think). Do you remember the newsagents shop run by Miss Shrigley which is still standing? Many a time we stood outside, our noses pressed against the window staring at the toys that our parents could not afford.
I remember the dirt croft, we use to play marbles on it on our way to Thomas St school. I vaguely remember one or two trees in the back yards of the houses but it could be my memory playing tricks. I do pass through the area every now and then as I sometimes go on Grey Mare Lane market.
Cheers, Kate ... more >>

Thanks for clearing up that query Kate, what a memory! Yes the newsagents on Blackwin St corner I knew as (Bills) they had a bulldog that wandered around behind the counter. Do you remember Welshs Dairy a corner shop further along Birch St facing Chadwick St, as you walked through the first doorway (which was always left open) you where faced with the option of entering two more doors, (one straight ahead & one to the side.) I remember being sent on an errand there one day, I entered the wrong door which lead into the hallway of their house! I wouldnt try the other door thinking Id be told off for looking inside the house, and ran off instead to try another shop. On arriving back home I was told off for bringing back the wrong item, because the brand Id been sent out for, was only sold at Welshs Dairy. The good old days eh! ... more >>

Well Paul, I think it is confession time. My memory isn't all that great, I get a lot of my information from the Kelly's directories at Peel Park library.
I can't recollect Welsh's Dairy but next time I go to the library I'll look it up.
I do remember having to go for my brother's pie and chips. He would like his pie from Reeves chip shop on Birch St and the chips from another chip shop on Belle Vue St, was it called Heap,s? What a chore!
I remember Bill Almark and his wife who ran the newsagents after Miss Shrigley. They were a very friendly couple and sadly, Bill passed away not long after his wife.
What used to fascinate me about the place was the unusual shape of the living accommodation. I see you used to live near West Gorton library, another beautiful building. Why on earth did they pull it down?
Cheers, Kate ... more >>

Hi Paul,
I've found out that the sweet shop on Birch St was called Capper's in the 1950's and Bouffler's in the 1960's. Welsh's dairy was on the same side of Birch St as Appleton's greengrocers and must have been the only shop on Birch St that I never went in.
I remember very well going to Appleton's on the way to school to buy bruised apples at about a penny each.

Hi
We lived at 28 until about 1963 and then moved over the road to 31 at the end next to the alley. I remember an old couple who had a large seashell on their doorstep (in the days when you left your front door open). At no 31 we lived next door to Violet Barker at 29. I remember the grandson Stephen and his Mum Brenda Barker.
We followed the Cunninghams to Sutton Estate in 1965. I was 6 then, so my memory is scarce. I do remember cold draughty Victorian houses that were thrown up for the workers, no hot water, and the outside loo (and beetles). When we got to Sutton Estate, it was like paradise. Oh, and the buzzer going off at 8am, I think from Peacocks. ... more >>
