Broadham Green by HEATHER (Member 214047) on 14-Nov-06
I have never been to Oxted but I feel I know a quite a bit about the area as I have been researching family history and my husband's Smith forbears all lived in Broadham Green and Limpsfield at least from 1793 to the 1920s. I have looked at the detailed maps of the area on http://maps.google.co.uk/maps and there are fantastic close up aerial photos which can be overlaid with the maps. We are hoping to come to the area in the >>more

A Grandfather's Plea From the Past by Brenda MacCulloch (Member 50862) on 22-Nov-04
A Grandfather's Plea From the Past I am not sure who you may be or where you might be living, I can only assume that if you are reading this you have some interest in family history and that’s good because of the pickle that my ggggrandaughters Pam and Brenda, have found themselves in when trying to find out where I came from, who my parents were and if I had any brothers and sisters. The same for my darling wife, >>more

Wood Family Tree by Peter Thomas Wood (Member 141986) on 24-May-04
My name is Peter Thomas Wood, Bracebridge Canada. In the graveyard at St MAry's is a Thomas Wood who died in a fall in the Chalk Pits in the 1800's. I am related to him and others buried there. When I visited 25 years ago, I stood in the churchyard of St Mary's and looked to the ridge. I could see a house on the ridge, beside the chalk pit. I was told that the Wood family lived there generations ago. >>more

A25 as it disects old oxted. by Paul Collier (Member 132951) on 29-Jan-04
I live in caterham, and my children now attend Oxted school. I have been wondering recently why the A25 does not seem to follow the natural contour of the land. But seems to be built up on a manmade embankment. Any details as to why and when, would be greatfully received.

hi im andy ,going knowhere as usual.i think youll find that the motorways m25 &23 were subject to not being flooded out by the probably now gone underground watercourses of the anchient river bourne, it used to surface every 9/7/20? years.evidence of this is an old old stone bridge opposite star lane at what used to be the start of the m23/25 spagetti junction up a little lane i thinnk it was called merstram or nearby . that same old river >>more

From what i can remember from school, Oxted comes from Oxtead which was originally from Oakstead due to all the oak trees that grew in the area. I hope this is of some help, susan
